PM Modi Unveils Development Projects Worth Rs. 3350 crore in Varanasi

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh on 19 February 2019 to unveil several development projects worth Rs. 3350 crore.
  • PM laid the foundation stone of Guru Ravidas Birth Place Development Project at Shri Guru Ravidas Janmasthan Temple, Seergoverdhanpur to mark Ravidas Jayanti celebrations. 

International Conference ENCO-2019 to be held in New Delhi

  • The International Conference and Exhibition on Energy and Environment – Challenges and Opportunities (ENCO-2019) will be held from 20th to 22nd February 2019 in New Delhi.
  • The conference will be inaugurated by the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind.
  • The 3 day conference aims to deliberate and identify the R&D needs to innovate new techniques, technologies and applications for clean, safe, symbiotic sustenance of society, environment, energy and industries in post-2020 era.

Phase I of Pan-India Single Emergency Helpline Number 112 Launched in 16 States/UTs

  • The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister of Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi together launched the pan-India single emergency number “112” in New Delhi on February 19, 2019.
  • The first phase of Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) for women safety was launched in 16 states and Union territories.
  • All the states will need to set up a dedicated Emergency Response Centre, ERC.
  • The project is being financed using Rs 321.69 crore from the Nirbhaya Fund Scheme

Ministry of Labour launches SAMADHAN Portal for raising industrial disputes on pilot basis

  • Ministry of Labour and Employment has launched SAMADHAN Portal on Pilot basis for conciliation, arbitration and adjudication of the Industrial Disputes (IDs) as defined in the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 (ID Act).
  • SAMADHAN stands for Software Application for Monitoring And Disposal, Handling of Industrial Disputes.
  • Initially, SAMADHAN has been launched in five states viz. Chattisgarh, Delhi, Karnataka, Rajasthan & Odisha.
  • The portal aims at hassle free and timely disposal of Industrial Disputes in a simple and transparent manner.

Commerce Ministry launches SWAYATT initiative for GeM

  • Union Minister Suresh Prabhu, launched SWAYATT initiative and Start-up Runway in New Delhi on February 19, 2019.
  • SWAYATT is an initiative to promote Start-ups, Women and Youth Advantage using e-Transactions on Government e Marketplace (GeM).
  • Start-up Runaway- tt is an initiative of GeM in association with Start -up India to help Start-ups that are registered with Start -up India to access the public procurement market of GeM and sell their products and services to government buyers.
  • GeM- Government e Marketplace is an online market place for procurement of common use goods and services by government ministries, departments and CPSEs and was setup in 2016.

Four New Projects Launched in North East for the Development of Silk Sector

  • In order to give boost to the development of silk sector, the Union Minister of Textiles, Smriti Zubin Irani, inaugurated four projects in North East India on February 19, 2019 via video link.
  • The projects include:
    1. Silk Seed Production Centre in Tura, Meghalaya
    2. Silk Printing and Processing Unit in Agartala, Tripura
    3. Eri Spun Silk Mill in Sangaipat, Imphal
    4. Project for Development of Sericulture in Mamit, Mizoram

Government widens Definition of Start-ups; Angel Tax exemption limit enhanced

  • Ministry of Commerce & Industry has reviewed the defination of start-ups and widened its scope. The two changes made in the definition of the start-up is:
    • An entity will be considered as a Start-ups upto a period of ten years from the date of incorporation and registration.(Earlier it was 7 years).
    • An entity will continue to be recognised as a Start-ups, if its turnover for any of the financial years since incorporation and registration has not exceeded Rs. 100 crore. (Earlier it was Rs. 25 Crore).

Annual International Desert Festival Concludes in Jaisalmer

  • The 40th International Annual Desert Festival was held on the sand dune of Jaisalmer from February 17 to 19, 2019.
  • The festival is organised each year to showcase the rich and colorful folk culture of Rajasthan, besides Camels playing the major role in this festival.

India’s First Fulldome 3D Digital Theatre Launched in Kolkata

  • The first-of-its-kind in India ‘Fulldome 3D Digital Theatre’ has been inaugurated at the Science city in Kolkata.
  • The Science City is operated by the National Council of Science Museums under the Ministry of Culture
  • The cost of developing ‘fulldome 3D Digital Theatre’ is Rs 20 crore.

  • 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards has been announced. The winners of the award are:
    • Sportsman of the Year award 2019: Novak Djokovic – Tennis Player from Serbia
    • Sportswoman of the Year award 2019: Simone Biles – Gymnast from America
    • Comeback award 2019Tiger Woods – Golfer
    • Breakthrough of the Year award 2019: Naomi Osaka – Tennis Player from Japan
