India Skills 2018, Country’s Biggest Skill Competition Concludes

  • The country’s biggest skill competition, India Skills 2018 has concluded in New Delhi. It was held from October 2-6, 2018. 
  • India Skills 2018 was the second edition of the nationwide competition organized by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
  • It aimed to identify, recognize, promote and reward the best talents in various skills. 
  • Some of the winners of the competition will be given additional training, before they represent India at the 45th WorldSkills Competition at Kazan, Russia in 2019.

India’s Economy Projected at 7.3 percent in the 2018-19: World Bank

  • According to the World Bank, growth in India is firming up and projected to accelerate to 7.3 percent in the 2018-19 fiscal with stronger private spending and export growth as the key drivers.
  • For the next two years, the global body predicts the growth at 7.5 percent.

RBI Clears Setting ‘Kerala Bank’; Expects Rs 650 bn in Deposits

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given its nod to start the Kerala Bank, a venture proposed by the Kerala government.
  • Important Features of Kerala Bank
    • It will be Kerala Cooperative Bank, but will be referred to as Kerala Bank.
    • It will have all the facilities of a commercial bank, including ATMs.
    • The State Cooperative Bank and the 14 district cooperative banks in the state would be merged to form the new bank.
    • The state expects Rs 650 billion in deposits in the bank once it is formed.
    • The new bank will provide modern facilities to the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS).
    • A task force has been formed for the establishment of the bank.
    • The formation of the Kerala Bank would eliminate the double or repeated charges on services, which would help to provide loans to customers at a lower interest rate and help Kerala have deposits and credits within the state. 

Japan and India Bilateral Maritime Exercise JIMEX 18 Commences at Visakhapatnam

  • The third edition of Japan-India Maritime Exercise (JIMEX) kicked off in Visakhapatnam and will be held from 07 to 15 October 2018.
  • JIMEX-18 is aimed to enhance interoperability, improve understanding and imbibe the best practices of each other.
  • The Indian ships participating in the exercise are INS Satpura, multipurpose stealth frigate, INS Kadmatt, Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvette, Missile Corvette and INS Shakti, the Fleet Tanker. In addition, one submarine, P8I Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft and a number of integral helicopters would also be participating in the exercise. 
  • Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) is being represented by Ships Kaga, an Izumo Class Helicopter Destroyer and Inazuma – a Guided Missile Destroyer.

Srinivasan Swamy Appointed Chairman of International Advertising Association

  • Srinivasan Swamy, chairman of marketing communications firm RK Swamy Hansa Group, has been unanimously elected as the Chairman and World President of International Advertising Association 
  • Swamy who has been appointed for a period of two years is the first Indian to hold the position.
  • He takes over the reins from legendary advertising professional Felix Tataru from Romania.
  • IAA is a global advertising body with presence in 76 countries.

“Feisty at Fifty” Authored by Sudha Menon Released

  • The novel titled “Feisty at Fifty” written by veteran author Sudha Menon was released at the Pune International Literary Festival. The book has been published by Pan Macmillan India.
  • Menon is the author of 4 best selling novels namely Leading Ladies: Women Who Inspire India, and Devi, Diva or She-Devil: The smart career woman’s survival guide and the latest being Feisty at Fifty.

Lewis Hamilton Wins Japanese Grand Prix

  • British racing driver Lewis Hamilton won the 2018 Japanese Grand Prix. With this win he ended his 2018 with a total 9 Grand Prix title.
  • Hamilton was followed by Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas in second, Max Verstappen in third, and teammate Daniel Ricciardo at fourth spot respectively.

Basilashvili Defeats Del Potro to Win China Open Tennis Title

  • Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili defeated the top-seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina 6-4, 6-4 to earn the China Open Men’s Single Tennis title held in Beijing, China.
  • In Women’s Single event, Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki defeated Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia 6–3, 6–3 to be the winner.

Well Known Gandhian Natwar Thakkar Passes Away

  • Prominent Gandhian Natwar Thakkar passed away due to health issues. He was 86.
  • Thakkar, a Padmashree winner, spent a considerable part of his life in Nagaland and arrived in the northeastern state in 1955 and worked among the tribals, spreading the message of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • He set up a “Nagaland Gandhi Ashram” in Chuchuyimlang village in 1955.

Oscar-Winning Animator Will Vinton Passes Away

  • Oscar-winning animatorWill Vinton passed away of at the age of 70. He is well known for coining the term ‘Claymation’, a style of stop-motion animation.
  • Vinton won an Oscar in for the 1975 animated short film ‘Closed Mondays’.
