Government of India & ADB Signs $75 Million Loan to Improve Urban Services in 4 Karnataka Towns

  • The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank has signed a $75 million loan agreement on November 27, 2018 to provide 24 x7 water supply in Karnataka’s four coastal towns of Kundapura, Mangalore, Puttur and Udupi to improve sanitation infrastructure for Mangalore town.
  • This loan is tranche 2 of the loan agreement under Karnataka Integrated Urban Water Management Investment Program approved by ADB Board in 2014.
  • The $75 million tranche 1 loan is helping strengthen urban water supply and sanitation services in three other towns of the State – Byadagi, Davangere, and Harihar.

MoS (Home) Shri Kiren Rijiju Inaugurates 14th Formation Day of NDMA

  • The Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju, inaugurated the 14th Formation Day of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in New Delhi on November 27, 2018.
  • The theme of this year’s Formation Day is ‘Early Warning for Disasters’.

India’s average real wage growth highest in South Asia during 2008-17: ILO report

  • As per the Global Wage Report 2018/19 of ILO, India has the highest average real wage growth in South Asia during 2008—17.
  • In South Asia, India led the average real wage growth in 2008—17 at 5.5 against a regional median of 3.7. Following India was Nepal (4.7), Sri Lanka (4), Bangladesh (3.4), Pakistan (1.8) and Iran (0.4).
  • Overall, global wage growth declined to 1.8 per cent in 2017 from 2.4 per cent in 2016. The findings are based on data from 136 countries. 
  • Gender Pay Gap: The report find that globally women continue to be paid approximately 20 per cent less than men. Gender wage gap highest in India, women are paid 34% less than men

CSIR to Establish High-End Skill Development Centre in Chandigarh.

  • India’s premier National Research Laboratory CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (CSIR-IMTECH) has proposed to establish a ‘High End Skill Development Centre’ in Chandigarh through public private partnership under the CSIR program for “Setting up
    Knowledge Alliance between CSIR constituent Laboratories and Private Industry”..
  • CSIR IMTECH has partnered with Merck, a leading German science and technology company, to set up this first of its kind, Academia-Industry-led laboratory.
  • It will augment Government of India’s initiative for skilling India in the area of Life Science.
  • Merck in collaboration with CSIR-IMTECH will use their expertise in Life Science to build a centre which will help researchers and students develop advanced competencies and analytical skills required for life science research. 

FIEO To Launch Mega Logistics Meet in January 2019

  • The Federation of Indian Export Organisations, has announced to hold a Mega Logistics Meet “Logix India 2019” in January 2019 in order to improve logistics cost effectiveness and operational efficiencies for India’s Global Trade. 
  • Logix India 2019 is scheduled to take place in New Delhi from January 31 to February 2, 2019.
  • Appreciating the effort of FIEO, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu,launched the logo and brochure of Logix India 2019 in New Delhi on November 27, 2018.

ISRO to launch India’s HysIS satellite with 30 foreign satellites

  • ISRO will launch on November 29 workhorse rocket PSLV-C43 carrying India’s earth observation satellite HysIS and 30 co-passenger satellites from Sriharikota. 
  • HysIS is an earth observation satellite developed by ISRO. The primary goal ofHysIS is to study the earth’s surface in visible, near infrared and shortwave infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

World’s 1st Underground Hotel Inaugurated in Shanghai

  • The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is the world’s first ever underground luxury hotel that has been inaugurated in China on November 15, 2018.
  • The hotel is located 32 kilometers southwest of Shanghai and is built into the side of a formerly abandoned quarry buried almost 90 metres below the ground level.
  • The luxurious quarry hotel has 18 storeys with 16 of them below the ground while two floors are completely underwater inside the hotel’s 10-meter deep aquarium.
  • The hotel was designed by the architects who also created Dubai’s Burj Al Arab and the whole construction project has taken nearly 10 years with total cost exceeding 1 billion yuan ($151 million), and approximately 5,000 architects, engineers, designers and construction workers involved.

World’s highest power transmission project completed in Tibet by China

  • China recently completed the construction of the world’s highest power line grid in Tibet 
  • Constructed in the Tibetan Autonomous Region, the power line touches a height of 5300 meters at its highest with Tower 8L196 which is the world’s highest 500-kv transmission tower.

Renowned flautist Keshav Ginde to get Pt. Bhimsen Joshi award

  • Renowned flautist Pandit Keshav Ginde shall be conferred this year’s prestigious Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Lifetime Achievement Award for Classical Music.
  • The annual award is instituted by Maharashtra and honours maestros in classical music and singing, and carries a cash award of Rs 500,000, a memento and a citation.

Sunil Arora to Take Over as New Chief Election Commissioner

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed former bureaucrat Sunil Arora as new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India.
  • He will succeed the incumbent Om Prakash Rawat and will take charge on December 2.
  • Arora is currently Election Commissioner of India.
  • Ashok Lavasa is the second election commissioner.

J Prithiviraj elected President of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI)

  • J Prithiviraj has been elected as the President of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI).
  • The FMSCI is the only national motor sport federation recognised by the Government of India for the promotion and control of motor sport in India.
  • Headquarter- Chennai.

BCCI announces two-year ban for age frauds

  • The BCCI has announced that a cricketer guilty of age fraud will be barred from all its recognised tournaments for two years.
  • Earlier, a cricketer faced a ban of one year for age frauds.

  • The 9th Indian Organ Donation Day was observed on 27 November 2018. 
  • 9th Indian Organ Donation Day was organized by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) in Delhi
  • It must be noted that the World Organ Donation Day is observed on 13 August each year.
