PM Modi Concludes his Visit to Gujarat

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation L& T Armoured Systems Complex in Hazira, Gujarat on January 19, 2019.
  • In addition to this, he also laid foundation stone of Nirali Cancer Hospital at Navsari. 
  • With this, PM concluded his visit to Gujarat which began on January 17.
  • His 3 day long visit to the state was marked by the inauguration of various other events like:
    • Global Trade Show
    • Super-speciality public hospital “Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Medical Sciences and Research” in Ahmedabad
    • Ahmedabad Shopping Festival-2019 at the Sabarmati Riverfront
    • Vibrant Gujarat Summit-2019 

PM Modi launches M-Aarogya mobile app and other projects in Dadra & Nagar Haveli

  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on January 19, 2019 visited at Silvassa in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and inaugurated several development projects worth more than Rs 1400 crore that includes:
    • M-Aarogya mobile app – for better healthcare facility and for providing healthcare facilities through mobile app was launched in the UT.
    • New Industrial policy and new IT policy has been launched to give a boost to Industries.

PM Modi inaugurates India’s first National Museum of Indian Cinema in Mumbai

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the National Museum of Indian Cinema at Films Division of India premises in Mumbai. This is first such museum on Indian Cinema in the country.
  • The Museum is housed in two buildings – the New Museum Building and the 19th century historic palace Gulshan Mahal – in the Films Division campus in Mumbai. 
  • The New Museum Building has four Exhibition Halls:
    • Gandhi & Cinema
    • Children’s Film Studio
    • Technology, creativity & Indian cinema
    • Cinema across India
  • The state-of-the-art Museum is built at a cost of Rs. 140.61 crore

Defence Ministry approves Army proposal to induct women as jawans; Women to comprise 20 per cent of total Corps

  • Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman gave a nod for induction of women as Jawans in the Army’s Corps of Military Police.
  • The women will be inducted in graded manner to eventually comprise 20 per cent of total Corps of Military Police of the Army
  • Till now women were allowed to enter the Army only as officers and that too in select branches.

Ministry of Housing to organise Shehri Samridhi Utsav from 1st – 15th February 2019

  • Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has announced that it will organise a fortnightly event named ‘Shehri Samridhi Utsav’ from 1st -15th February 2019. The event will focus on urban livelihoods.
  • The event aims at extending the outreach of National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM) to the poorest of the poor and the most vulnerable, showcase its initiatives and facilitate access of SHG members to the other government schemes.
  • Various activities will be organized at the city, state and national level, with the active participation from the States and Cities.

India to host UN 14th session of the Conference of Parties to UNCCD

  • India will host the 14th session of the Conference of Parties to United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in 2019 with an aim to address the issue of land degradation and desertification.
  • The event is expected to be held in the month of October 2019.
  • The UNCCD that was established in 1994, has 197 parties working towards maintaining and restoring land and soil productivity and mitigating the effects of drought.

2nd World Orange Festival begins in Nagpur

  • The 4-day event of 2nd World Orange Festival has started in Nagpur, Maharashtra from January 18, 2019 and will continue till January 21.
  • The event will not only offer the famous Oranges of Nagpur to the world, but also showcase and brand the exquisite fruit in order to boost its export.

Microsoft launches e-commerce portal “re-weave.” for Telangana’s handloom weavers

  • Microsoft India has launched a new e-commerce platform re-weave.in for handloom weavers of Telangana under its Project ReWeave. This is a part of its philanthropic initiatives.
  • The “re-weave.in” will host signature collections created by the weaver communities, and showcase traditional designs and products created from natural dyes.

HDFC Standard Life Insurance renamed to HDFC Life Insurance

  • HDFC Standard Life Insurance on January 18, 2019 changed its name to HDFC Life Insurance after receiving all the relevant approvals from regulatory authorities.
  • The company will henceforth operate under the name HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd

Rio de Janeiro named as ‘World Capital of Architecture’ for 2020 by UNESCO

  • Rio de Janeiro the capital city of Brazil has been named as the World Capital of Architecture for 2020 by the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
  • Rio de Janeiro will be the first city to receive the title under “World Capital of Architecture initiative”  launched together by UNESCO and the International Union of Architects (UIA) in November 2018.
  • Rio defeated Paris and Melbourne in the race.
  • According to UNESCO, the World Capital of Architecture is intended to become “an international forum for debates about pressing global challenges from the perspectives of culture, cultural heritage, urban planning and architecture”.
