Sushma Swaraj launches India for Humanity initiative in New Delhi

  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has launched India for Humanity initiative in New Delhi as part of 150th Birth Anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi being held over the next one year.
  • The ‘India for Humanity’ initiative will feature a year-long series of artificial limb fitment camps in a number of countries spanning the globe. 
  • The External Affairs Ministry is collaborating with charitable organization Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti, BMVSS. 
  • The camps will be initially held in 12 countries identified through the Missions with financial support of Indian government. 

32nd India – Indonesia Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) Begins

  • The opening ceremony of the 32nd edition of India – Indonesia coordinated patrol (IND-INDO CORPAT) began at the Belawan harbour, Indonesia. 
  • The closing ceremony will be held at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Island.
  • The entire patrolling would be conducted from October 11 – 27, 2018.
  • Indian Naval Ship Kulish, a Kora class missile corvette and an Indian Dornier (naval maritime time patrol aircraft) are taking part in the patrol.

World Bank’s Maiden Human Capital Index Places India at 115

  • The World Bank has released its first report on Human Capital Index (HCI) which ranked 157 economies on parameters like child mortality, health and education.
  • The global body has placed India at the 115th position, lower than Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Bangladesh. 
  • However, India has rejected the findings of the World Bank’s report saying that the HCI score for India does not reflect the key initiatives that are being taken for developing human capital in the country.
  • Singapore topped the poll followed by South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Finland.

UNICEF – NASSCOM Inks Pact To Strengthen Child Rights

  • UNICEF and NASSCOM Foundation has signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen child rights by working together to co-create sensitisation workshops across India.
  • Jointly, both organisations will work to help parents, teachers and children by letting them know of these risks and guiding them to a safer, more secure Internet learning experience
  • They will work collaboratively on two key areas including national sensitisation on ‘child online protection’ and ‘encouraging innovations for child rights’ in the country.

Depository Participants to Report FPI Registration on Monthly Basis: SEBI

  • SEBI has asked designated depository participants (DDPs) to inform on monthly basis about the average time taken by them in processing of applications for FPI registration to bring transparency in the process.
  • Under the new norms, DDP will have to provide the number of foreign portfolio investors (FPI) applications received and the average time taken in processing of such applications during the immediate preceding month to Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) by fifth working day of every month, in a prescribed format.
  • DDP will have to endeavour to dispose of the application for grant of registration as soon as possible but not later than 30 days after receipt of such application by the DDP.

NSE, NSE IFSC Sign Licensing Agreement with LME

  • Leading bourse NSE and NSE IFSC Ltd, the international bourse at GIFT City in Gujarat, have entered into a licensing agreement with the London Metal Exchange (LME) to source its base metal prices for settlement of futures contracts.
  • This comes a day before NSE is set to launch trading in commodity derivatives which is scheduled on October 12.
  • The licensing agreement would permit NSE and NSE IFSC to use the LME prices for settling various commodity futures contracts subject to receiving regulatory approvals.
  • LME is the world centre for the trading of industrial metals — the majority of all non-ferrous metal futures business is transacted on LME platforms.

Bank of Baroda’s MD and CEO P S Jayakumar Gets a Year Extension

  • P S Jayakumar, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Bank of Baroda has been given one-year extension i.e. till October 12, 2019. 
  • His tenure on the post was to expire on October 12, 2018. 
  • Jayakumar, a chartered accountant by qualification, had joined Bank of Baroda in October, 2015.

Mahesh Reddy Appointed Secretary General PHDCCI with Immediate Effect

  • Mahesh Y Reddy has been appointed as the Secretary General of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry with immediate effect.
  • Reddy had served as Director General of Infrastructure Industry and Logistics Federation of India for eight years and holds 28 years of experience in national level trade, infrastructure and industry bodies in various capacities.

Indus Towers Bags 2018 Deming Prize

  • Indus Towers has become the first Indian company in the service sector and fifth globally to win the Deming Prize for 2018.
  • Indus Towers is the world’s largest telecom tower company (outside China).
  • The Deming Prize was bestowed on Indus Towers for distinctive performance improvements through the application of Total Quality Management (TQM) practices.
  • The Deming Prize is the oldest and most widely recognized, given to companies that have established customer-oriented business objectives and strategies, and implemented TQM to achieve them.
  • Till date only the 29th Indian company have received this award.

International Day Of The Girl Child – October 11

  • International Day of the Girl Child (also known as Day of Girls and the International Day of Girls) is an observed annually on October 11 since 2012.
  • This international observance day was declared by the United Nations to raise awareness of issues facing girls internationally surrounding education, nutrition, child marriage, legal and medical rights.
  • The theme for 2018 International Day of the Girl Child is “With Her: A Skilled GirlForce”

Veteran Singer Nitin Bali Passes Away

  • Well known singer Nitin Bali passed away after serious injuries sustained from a car accident in Mumbai. He was 47.
  • He was best known for redux version of songs including Neele Neele Ambar Par, Ek Ajnabee Haseena Se, Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas and Choo kar Mere Man Ko among others.

Environmentalist G D Agarwal Passes Away

  • Former IIT-Kanpur professor and an environmentalist, G.D. Agarwal, died after a heart attack in Rishikesh. He was 86.
  • He was on a hunger strike since June 22 for a pollution-free and clean Ganga.
  • He had demanded that steps be taken to make the river free-flowing for natural cleansing, and also a ban on construction of all hydroelectric projects along the tributaries of the Ganga besides enactment of the Ganga Protection Management Act.
