PM Modi inaugurates Deoghar Airport in Jharkhand

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Deoghar Airport in Jharkhand on July 12, 2022, in the presence of Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
  • The Deoghar airport is the second international airport in Jharkhand, after the first one in Ranchi, which was constructed in the year 2014.
  • Two more airports are proposed to be constructed for the state, including one in Dumka and the other at Bokaro.
  • PM Modi also launched development projects worth Rs. 16,835 crore.

Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar and Union Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurate National Institute of Fashion Technology in Panchkula

  • Union Textiles Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) at Panchkula in Haryana, in the presence of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
  • The NIFT Panchkula is the 17th campus of the country and will be developed as a world-class NIFT Campus.
  • The newly inaugurated NIFT campus in Panchkula will give a major boost to the textile, handloom and cottage industries in the state and help in overall development of the state.
  • The institute has been established with an amount of Rs 133.16 crore on 10.45 acres of land in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Textiles and NIFT, Delhi.

Kerala And Ahmedabad Feature In TIME Magazine’s The World’s Greatest Places Of 2022

  • Two locations from India, namely the Indian city of Ahmedabad and the Southern state of Kerala, have been featured in TIME magazine’s list of world’s greatest places of 2022.
  • The list compiles 50 extraordinary destinations to explore around the world.
  • The list also includes global destinations like Ras Al Khaimah, UAE; Park City, Utah; Seoul; Great Barrier Reef, Australia; The Arctic; Valencia, Spain; Trans Bhutan Trail, Bhutan; International Space Station; Bogota; Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia; Istanbul and Kigali, Rwanda.

Himachal Governor Rajendra Vishwanath unveils book ‘The McMahon line’ by former Army Chief General JJ Singh

  • The Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, recently released a book titled “The McMahon line: A century of discord”.
  • The book has been authored by General JJ Singh (Retd), the former Governor of Arunachal Pradesh and former Chief of Army Staff (CoAS).
  • The book is based on the experiences and research of General JJ Singh on the India-China border dispute.

 

GDP Rate

Nomura cuts India’s GDP forecast for 2023 to 4.7%

  • Nomura has revised downwards, the GDP growth forecast for India in 2023 to 4.7%. Earlier this rate was 5.4%.
  • Meanwhile, according to Nomura, India’s GDP growth for FY23 is projected at 7.0% and at 5.5% for FY24.

RBI approves appointment of Meena Hemchandra as part-time chairman of Karur Vysya Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the appointment of former RBI executive Meena Hemchandra as non-executive independent (part-time) Chairman of the private sector lender Karur Vysya Bank for three years.
  • The 64-year-old Hemchandra was the Executive Director of RBI from June 2015 to November 2017.
Ranking

India ranks 135th in WEF’s Gender Gap Index 2022; Iceland tops

  • India has been ranked at 135th place in terms of gender parity, as per the annual Gender Gap Report 2022 of the World Economic Forum (WEF). In 2021, India’s rank was 140 among 156 nations.
  • Iceland has retained its position as the world’s most gender-equal country, among 146 nations on the index.
  • Finland, Norway, New Zealand and Sweden are top five countries in the list respectively. 
  • Afghanistan is the worst-performing country in the report.
  • The Global Gender Gap Report 2022 is 16th edition of the annual publication by WEF.
  • The Global Gender Gap Index was first introduced by the World Economic Forum in 2006 to compare countries’ gender gaps across four dimensions: economic opportunities, education, health and political leadership.

Arjun Babuta strikes gold in 10m air rifle final at ISSF World Cup Changwon

  • Indian shooter Arjun Babuta beat Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Lucas Kozeniesky of USA, 17-9, in men’s 10m air rifle event to win maiden gold medal for the country in the ongoing International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF)  World Cup in Changwon, South Korea.
  • This is Arjun’s maiden gold at Senior World Cup. Earlier, he had bagged the yellow metal at the 2016 Junior World Cup in Gabala, Azerbaijan.
  • Apart from this, the Indian pair of Mehuli Ghosh and Shahu Tushar Mane bagged the second gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team final. They defeated Hungarian pair of Eszter Meszaros and Istvan Pen 17-13.
  • The duo of Palak and Shiva Narwal bagged bronze in the 10m Air Pistol mixed event, surpassing Kazakhstan’s Irina Loktionova and Valeriy Rakhimzhan 16-0.

Abhishek Verma and Jyothi Surekha Vennam wins bronze in archery at The Birmingham World Games 2022 

  • The duo of Indian archer Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Abhishek Verma won bronze medal in Mixed team compound event, to win the first medal for the country at The World Games 2022 in Birmingham, USA.
  • They defeated Canada’s Andrea Becerra & Miguel Becerra by a margin of 157-156.
  • The 11th edition of The World Games is being held at Birmingham, Alabama, USA from July 7-17 2022.
Obituary

Padma Shri awardee noted social worker Avdhash Kaushal passes away at 87

  • Padma Shri winning noted social worker Avdhash Kaushal passed away recently following a prolonged illness. He was 87.
  • Kaushal was the founder of the NGO named Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra (based in Dehradun, Uttarakhand). He was known for hif fight against human rights and the conservation of the environment.
  • Kaushal had been close to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
