- The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is the world’s first ever underground luxury hotel that has been inaugurated in China on November 15, 2018.
- The hotel is located 32 kilometers southwest of Shanghai and is built into the side of a formerly abandoned quarry buried almost 90 metres below the ground level.
- The luxurious quarry hotel has 18 storeys with 16 of them below the ground while two floors are completely underwater inside the hotel’s 10-meter deep aquarium.
- The hotel was designed by the architects who also created Dubai’s Burj Al Arab and the whole construction project has taken nearly 10 years with total cost exceeding 1 billion yuan ($151 million), and approximately 5,000 architects, engineers, designers and construction workers involved.
