Mumbai Recognised among ‘2022 Tree City of the World’ by FAO

  • India’s commercial capital Mumbai has been included in the World Tree City 2022 list, for the second consecutive year, for promoting best practices in urban forestry.
  • The United Nations Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and Arbor Day Foundation (ADF) conduct the TCW programme
  • The Tree Cities of the World (TCW) recognition began in 2019, to recognise efforts of cities globally that strive to balance the trees and environment and are included in the TCW list.
  • Mumbai was also part of TCW list in 2021, when it shared the honour with Hyderabad.
  • Mumbai fulfilled all the five ADF criteria to receive the honour. They were:
    1. determining responsibilities for tree care,
    2. setting rules to govern urban forests and tree management,
    3. maintaining an up-to-date inventory or assessment of local tree assets,
    4. allocating resources for a tree management plan, and
    5. organizing an annual tree festival to educate citizens.

IPS Krishna Prakash Swims against waves from Gateway Of India to Elephanta Caves

  • The Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Krishna Prakash recently swam from Gateway of India to Elephanta Caves, in Mumbai, as part of the ‘Drowning Prevention Awareness’ campaign.
  • Officer Prakash completed the expedition of 16.20 kms in just 5 hours 26 minutes.
  • In general, the swimming route is from Elephanta caves to Gateway of India in Arabian Sea.
  • Officer Prakash is the first person in history to complete the task of swimming in reverse side, against the waves, from Gateway of India to Elephanta Caves.
  • Currently, he is serving as the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissioner.

Bollywood actor Rahul Bose gets Odisha’s Rugby Stadium named after him

  • Veteran Bollywood actor Rahul Bose inaugurated a rugby stadium in Odisha, named after him, on March 28, 2023..
  • It must be noted that Rahul Bose currently serves as the President of the Indian Rugby Football Union (Rugby India).
  • Rugby India is the governing body for sport of rugby union in India. Its headquarter is situated in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • Rahul had been rugby player and represented India in 17 internationals rugby matches.

Defence Ministry inks 3000 crore contract with NSIL to develop dedicated communication satellite for Indian Army

  • The Ministry of Defence has signed a Rs. 3,000-crore contract with New Space India Limited (NSIL), on March 29, 2023, for an advanced communication satellite, GSAT 7B, for the Indian Army.
  • It must be noted that the Indian Army currently do not have a dedicated satellite of its own. However Indian Air Force and Navy have their own top-end communication satellite.
  • To meet this need, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will indigenously develop an advanced five tonne geostationary satellite, which will provide high throughput services to the Indian Army.
  • The overall cost of this project is estimated at Rs 2,963 crore.
  • The Indian Army is expected to receive the satellite in 2026.
  • The satellite will be the first-of-its-kind in the five-tonne category, and will not only support the tactical communication needs of ground troops, but also remotely piloted aircraft, air defence weapons, and other mission-critical and fire support platforms.

World Bank approves $363 million loan to Karnataka to improve drinking water supply

  • The World Bank has approved a USD 363 million loan to Karnataka under “Karnataka Sustainable Rural Water Supply Program”, which aims to provide functioning tap water connections to every rural household in the state..
  • The loan amount will be used to provide a clean drinking water supply to two million rural households in the state through a piped water connection in their homes.
  • This will include the construction of the drinking water distribution network and the installation of water meters in rural households.
  • Around 10 million people across all 31 districts in the state will benefit from this project.

World Bank Approves $100 million loan for Odisha to Increase Social Protection and Disaster Resilience

  • The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has approved USD 100 million loan under Odisha State Capability and Resilient Growth Program.
  • This loan amount will be used to strengthen state’s early forecasting systems for improved response to disasters and enhance social protection coverage for poor and vulnerable households through digital platforms.
  • The Odisha State Capability and Resilient Growth Program aims to reduce losses caused by natural disasters through a multi-hazard digital warning system and strengthen the state’s data collection efforts for better resilience planning.

World Bank Approves $108 million loan  for Assam to Improve Disaster Preparedness for Flood-prone Districts

  • The World Bank’s Executive Board of Directors has approved USD 108 million loan for Assam, to help the state improve disaster preparedness and enhance flood forecasting.
  • The loan amount has been approved under the $500 million Assam Integrated River Basin Management Project.
  • The project will benefit around 6 million people in the state by building green infrastructure in the Beki and Buridehing river basins, to reduce vulnerability to floods and river erosion in the state
  • The $108 million loan will be issued from the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD).

UAE President appoints eldest son Sheikh Khaled as Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi

  • United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has appointed his eldest son Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.
  • Apart from this, Sheikh Mansour has been appointed as UAE vice president. He is the brother of President Sheikh Mohammed.
  • Sheikh Mansour will serve as VP along with Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Daniel Mookhey becomes first Indian-orign treasurer in Australia

  • An Indian-origin politician, Daniel Mookhey has been appointed as the Treasurer of the New South Whales in Australia.
  • He is the first Indian-origin politician to become Treasurer of Australia.
  • Mookhey took oath on the Bhagwat Gita, also being the first Australian minister to do so.

Veteran BJP MP Girish Bapat, Pune Lok Sabha MP, passes away at 73

  • Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP, Girish Bapat, has passed away, due to prolonged illness. He was 73 years old.
  • Girish Bapat was a Member of Parliament (MP) in 17th Lok Sabha from Pune constituency.
  • He was also a veteran Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker and a member of legislative assembly (MLA) for five consecutive terms since 1995.
