India’s GDP growth estimated at 4.5% for FY’20; 2.6% for FY’21: SBI report

  • According to the SBI Ecowrap report released by the State Bank of India (SBI), the GDP growth rate of India for the financial year 2020-21 is likely to fall to 2.6 percent due to the ongoing 21-day lockdown.
  • The GDP growth estimate for the current fiscal, i.e. 2019-20 is estimated at 4.5 percent.

Government of India launches coronavirus risk-tracking app “Corona Kavach”

  • Government of India has launched a coronavirus risk-tracking app in India and is named “Corona Kavach”.
  • The app has been developed by the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • The app uses a person’s location to assess whether they are in the high-risk geographical zone or not. It will track the data of the users every one hour to alert them of whether they have crossed paths with any person who has tested positive for the infection.

Goa Partners with Innovaccer to Launch Country’s First Self Assessment Tool for Covid-19

  • The Government of Goa has launched a COVID 19 self-assessment tool, to assist people in identifying symptoms and risks of being infected by novel coronavirus, without having to visit a healthcare facility physically.
  • With this, Goa has become the first state to launch India’s first digital initiative to tackle novel Coronavirus.
  • The self-assessment tool named ‘Test Yourself Goa’ has been launched by the Directorate of Health Services, Government of Goa in partnership with Innovaccer.
  • It has a short individual survey that seeks information such as name, contact number, location, asks questions about recent travel to high-risk countries, symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, and any existing health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension among others.
  • Based on a survey, the self-assessment tool tells whether you are likely or not likely suspect of COVID-19, as per the US CDC’s guidelines.

Indian Army launches “Operation Namaste” to combat the spread of COVID-19

  • Army Chief General MM Naravane has launched “Operation Namaste” to combat the spread of COVID-19.
  • The aim of the Operation is to insulate the 1.3 million armed force from coronavirus infection and extend all possible assistance to the government in containing the pandemic.
  • MM Naravane said that since social distancing among the Army personnel may not be possible to implement in key formations due to tactical and operational reasons, hence Army personnel to have been advised to keep themselves safe and fit.
  • Indian Army has so far, established eight quarantine facilities across the country.

US launches Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) satellite for military communication

  • The United States Space Force launched its first national security mission, the Lockheed Martin Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) satellite on March 26, 2020. It will help the US in military communication.
  • This was the sixth and the final in the Lockheed Martin AEHF constellation and is named AEHF-6. The launch was done from Cape Canaveral in Florida.
  • The satellite constellation provides “global, survivable, protected communications capabilities for strategic command and tactical warfighters operating on ground, sea and air platforms.

Indian shot putter Navin Chikara suspended for four years for flunking dope test

  • The Athletics Integrity Unit of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has suspended Indian shot putter Navin Chikara for four years for using a prohibited substance and failing an out-of-competition dope test.
  • The suspension period of the 23-year-old is effective from July 27, 2018.

Samajwadi Party founder and Minister Beni Prasad Verma passes away at 79

  • Founder of Samajwadi Party and Former Union Minister, Beni Prasad Verma passed away at the age of 79.
  • He was a founding member of the Samajwadi Party. He was known as ‘Babu Ji’
  • He has served as Independent Minister of State for Communications, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Union Steel Minister. Verma was a Lok Sabha member from 1996 to 2014.
