Beneficiaries under Ayushman Bharat crosses 1 crore mark

  • The number of beneficiaries under the ‘Ayushman Bharat’ scheme has crossed the one crore mark. This was informed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana-Ayushman Bharat was launched in 2018 by PM Modi as the biggest government-sponsored healthcare scheme in the world.

HRD Minister Launches ‘National Testing Abhyas’ Mobile App to Offer Free Mock Tests to JEE, NEET Aspirants

  • The Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has launched a new mobile app named the ‘National Test Abhyas’, which will help JEE and NEET aspirants to take online mock tests and prepare for their respective entrance exam from home.
  • The app has been developed by National Testing Agency (NTA), to offer free mock tests for upcoming exams such as JEE Main and  NEET under the NTA’s purview.
  • The app will facilitate candidates’ access to high quality mock tests and also make up the loss to students due to closure of educational institutions and NTA’s Test-Practice Centers  due to the  lockdown.

Patanjali launches e-commerce app ‘OrderMe’

  • Swami Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurveda Limited has launched its e-commerce app named “OrderMe”.
  • The name of the app represents the spiritual word ‘OM’ (O for Order and M for Me).
  • OrderMe will limit its delivery and endorsing to swadeshi products.

Facebook Launches Shopping Platform ‘Facebook Shops’ for Small Businesses

  • Facebook has announced the launch of a new feature, ‘Facebook Shops’, on its platform as an important tool for small businesses to create online stores on Facebook and Instagram.
  • The new service was launched by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on 19 May 2020.
  • Facebook Shops will allow businesses to sell their product both on Facebook and Instagram by setting up storefronts on the apps.
  • The new initiative will bring more local businesses online and help them to survive amid the coronavirus pandemic, while also creating big new business opportunities for Facebook itself.

Franklin MF ropes in Kotak Mahindra Bank to wind-up 6 schemes

  • In April 2020, Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund company had closed 6 of its debt schemes in consultation with SEBI. SEBI had advised it to bring in an independent advisor on board ahead of the unitholders’ vote on the winding-up process.
  • In compliance with it, Franklin Templeton MF has appointed Kotak Mahindra Bank to expedite the process of monetizing the assets in the portfolios of the six wound-up schemes and make payouts to the affected investors.

Union Minister Harsh Vardhan To Take Charge As Chairman of WHO Executive Board

  • The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Harsh Vardhan, will take charge as the Chairman of the World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board on May 22, 2020, at the Executive Board meeting of WHO.
  • Mr Vardhan would succeed Dr Hiroki Nakatani of Japan as the Chairman of the 34-member WHO Executive Board.
  • The chairman’s post is held by rotation for one year among regional groups.

Govinda Rajulu Chintala appointed as Chairman of NABARD

  • Govinda Rajulu Chintala has been appointed as the chairman of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).
  • Presently he was the CMD of NABARD. He will hold the post till his superannuation on July 31, 2022.
  • He has replaced Dr. Harsh Kumar Bhanwala as the Chairman.

  • The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is held every year on May 21 to celebrate the richness of the world’s cultures and highlight the significance of its diversity as an agent of inclusion and positive change for achieving peace and sustainable development.
  • In 2001, UNESCO adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and in December 2002, the UN General Assembly declared May 21 to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.

National Anti Terrorism Day: 21 May

  • In India, the National Anti Terrorism Day is observed on May 21 to commemorate the death anniversary of former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi.
  • The day is also observed to spread the message of peace, harmony, and humankind and to promote unity among the people.
  • Rajiv Gandhi was India’s youngest Prime Minister. He was appointed as the sixth Prime Minister of the country and served the nation from 1984 to 1989.
  • Mr Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991 by a human bomb.
