National News


‘Atal Pension Yojana’ (APY) Marks 5 Year’s of Successful Implementation with Remarkable Feat of 2.23 Crore Enrolment

  • ‘Atal Pension Yojana’ (APY), the flagship social security scheme of Government of India, has completed five years of successful implementation as on 9 May 2020.
  • The scheme was launched on 09 May 2015 by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for old age income security particularly to the workers in the unorganised sector.
  • As on 09 May 2020, the total enrolment under the scheme stood at 2,23,54,028. 
    • During the first two years of the launch, almost 50 lacs subscribers were enrolled.
    • This doubled to 100 lacs in the third year.
    • The milestone of 1.50 crore was achieved in the 4th year.
    • In the fifth and last financial year, almost 70 lacs subscribers were enrolled under the scheme.
  • Under the scheme, the male to female subscription ratio of stood at 57:43, across the country covering all states and Union Territories.

MSME Ministry Launches CHAMPIONS Portal

  • The Union Ministry of MSME has launched CHAMPIONS portal www.Champions.gov.in.
  • The CHAMPIONS stands here for Creation and Harmonious Application of Modern Processes for Increasing the Output and National Strength.
  • It is a Technology driven Control Room-Cum-Management Information System, utilising modern ICT tools for assisting Indian MSMEs emerge as National and Global CHAMPIONS..
  • The portal will work to make the smaller MSME units big by solving their grievances, encouraging, supporting, helping and handholding.
  • In addition to ICT tools like telephone, internet and video conference, the system is enabled by Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics and Machine Learning.

ICMR-NIV, Pune Makes Country’s First Indigenously Developed ELISA Based Antibody Tests Kit

  • National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, one of the major institutes of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), has successfully developed the country’s first indigenous anti-SARS-CoV-2 human IgG ELISA test kit for antibody detection of COVID19.
  • The indigenous test is named as “COVID KAVACH ELISA”.
  • The ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) Test kit will play a critical role in large scale surveillance of proportion of the population exposed to SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection.
  • ELISA kits are similar to rapid antibody tests, which detect antibodies in the blood to find out if an individual was infected with COVID-19 infection or not. The only difference is that rapid antibody tests gives results on-the-spot while ELISA based test is laboratory dependent.
  • ICMR has partnered with Gujarat-based Pharma firm Zydus Cadila for mass-scale production of the ELISA test kits.
  • This test will be used to initiate a study in 75 of the worst affected districts of the country to check for community transmission of the coronavirus.

Madhya Pradesh Police Launches First-of-Its-Kind ‘FIR at Your Doorstep’ Scheme on pilot basis

  • Madhya Pradesh Government has launched a unique initiative called ‘FIR Aapke Dwar Yojana’, under which police officials will go to homes of victims to register a First Information Report (FIR).
  • This makes, Madhya Pradesh the first state in the country to implement such an innovative initiative to alleviate the problems of people in the times of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The scheme was launched by Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Dr Narottam Mishra on 11 May 2020 in Bhopal.
  • The ‘FIR Aapke Dwar’ scheme has been started as a pilot project in 23 Police Stations, which includes one urban and one rural Police Station at 11 Divisional Headquarters. The scheme will continue as a pilot project till August 31.
  • However, Datia is the only police station, chosen despite being located outside the divisional headquarters. It is the home town and assembly constituency of Home Minister Narottam Mishra.

China Launches Two Satellites to Test Space-based Communications Technology

  • China successfully launched two satellites into orbit on 12 May 2020, to test the space-based Internet of Things (IoT) communications technology.
  • The satellites, Xingyun-2 01 and 02, were launched by a Kuaizhou-1A (KZ-1A) carrier rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China.
  • The satellites will be useful to conduct tests on technologies including space-based IoT communications, inter-satellite laser communications and a low-cost commercial satellite platform.

Indian Journalist Siddharth Varadarajan Conferred with Deutsche Welle Freedom of Speech Award

  • Indian journalist Siddharth Varadarajan is among the 17 recipients of the 2020 Freedom of Speech Award presented by German public news outlet Deutsche Welle on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day on 3rd May 2020.
  • The award was presented to journalists worldwide who have disappeared or been arrested or threatened because of their reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • 17 journalists from 14 countries have been given the award, on behalf of all media professionals around the world, for showing “outstanding commitment to human rights and freedom of expression in the media”.

Morgan Stanley projects India GDP growth for 2020 at 0%; For 2021 at 7.7%

  • American multinational investment bank, Morgan Stanley has projected India’s GDP growth for 2020 at 0% and for 2021 at 7.7%.
  • For the global GDP growth, Morgan Stanley has made a projection of -3% in 2020 and 5.9% in 2021.

  • China has won the first edition of FIDE Chess.com Online Nations Cup against USA. India finished at 5th rank.
  • In the finals, China faced the USA which ended in a draw with 2-2. China was adjudged the winner on the basis of its topping the points table in the round-robin stage.

‘Crime Patrol’ Fame Actor Shafique Ansari Passes Away at 52

  • Actor Shafique Ansari, best-known for his appearance in TV series ‘Crime Patrol’, has passed away of cancer. He was 52.
  • Ansari was battling with thoracic cancer for two years and some months ago, he was also diagnosed with a lung infection.

Former TT champion Manmeet Singh Walia passes away

  • Former national table tennis champion Manmeet Singh Walia passed away at the age of 58 years.
  • Manmeet was suffering from ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). He had represented the country at multiple international events after making his debut at the Asian Championships in 1980.
