Gond Painting of Madhya Pradesh and Cumbum grapes of Tamil Nadu receives GI Tag

  • The famed Gond painting of Madhya Pradesh has received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • GI Tag ensures that no one other than the registered authorised user is allowed to use the name of the popular product.
  • Apart from this, the famous Cumbum Panneer Thratchai from Tamil Nadu, commonly known as Cumbum grapes has also receievd the GI tag.
  • The Cumbum valley in Tamil Nadu’s Western Ghats, is regarded as the “Grapes City of South India”.
  • The Authoor betel leaves, (locally known as vetrilai) of Tamil Nadu has also bagged GI tag.
  • Tamil Nadu’s Malai Poondu, Srivilliputtur Palkova and Palani Panchamirtham have also been awarded the GI tag.

Kolkata Metro becomes India’s first metro to operate underwater

  • The Kolkata Metro has become the first metro in India to operate an under water metro train. The trail run for the same was successfully completed on April 13, 2023.
  • The Kolkata Metro rake travelled through the tunnel under the Hooghly river, running from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade, covering four stations along the way – Esplanade, Mahakaran, Howrah, and Howrah Maidan.
  • The new route will help to ease congestion, by providing a faster, more efficient means of transportation.

HM Amit Shah launches Vibrant Villages Program in India’s ‘first village’ Kibithoo in Arunachal Pradesh

  • The Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the “Vibrant Villages Program (VVP)” at the Kibithoo town of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Home Minister Shah also urged people to term Kibithoo as India’s first village as the Sun’s rays fall first in this village in the country.
  • The VVP is a centrally sponsored scheme of the Modi government to link all the border villages and also provide trans valley connectivity, in states sharing Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
  • Under this VVP scheme, 2,967 villages in 46 blocks of 19 districts, in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh and UT of Ladakh have been identified for comprehensive development.
  • The programme will help in improving the quality of life of people living in identified border villages and encourage people to stay in their native locations thereby reversing the out migration from these villages and adding to security of the border.

National Conference on Millets held in Mussoorie in Uttarakhand

  • The Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Madhya Pradesh Agriculture Minister Kamal Patel, jointly inaugurated a three-day National Conference on Millets in Mussoorie from April 11 to 13, 2023.
  • The aim of the national level conference was to discuss the prospects and opportunities of millets and exchange ideas on developing a managed way to work on millets.
  • The conference saw participation of 50-60 delegates from different State Agricultural Marketing Boards of India, including Assam, Goa, Telangana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, and senior scientists from the Indian Millet Research Institute, Hyderabad, Indian Medical Plant Marketing Association, experts from the agriculture sector, and AD Ports Group.
  • The United Nations has declared 2023 as the International Millet Year.

UN projects India’s GDP to decelerate to 6% in 2023 from 6.6% in 2022

  • The United Nations Trade and Development Conference (UNCTAD) in its latest Trade and Development Report Update has projected India’s economic growth to decline to 6 percent in 2023 compared to 6.6 percent in 2022.
  • The UN expects the global growth to drop to 2.1% in 2023, compared to the 2.2% projected in September 2022.

RBI approves re-appointment of Sanjay Agarwal as MD&CEO of AU Small Finance Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India has approved the re-appointment of Sanjay Agarwal as managing director (MD) and CEO of AU Small Finance Bank [Headquarter-Jaipur].
  • His re-appointment is valid with effect from April 19, 2023, for a period of three years, that means till April 18, 2026.
  • RBI has also cleared the re-appointment of Uttam Tibrewal as the whole-time director of the bank for a period of three years.

Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh and Henriette Ishimwe of Rwanda wins ICC Player of the Month awards for March 2023

  • The Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been named as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month awards for March 2023 by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
  • Shakib has won the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for the second time. He had earlier won the Player of the Month award in July 2021.
  • Meanwhile, Rwanda’s all-rounder Henriette Ishimwe has bagged the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for March 2023.
Obituary

National Award winning Actress Uttara Baokar passes away at 79

  • Noted film and television actor and theatre artist Uttara Baokar has passed away following a prolonged illness. She was 79.
  • The award winning actress was known for her role in Mrinal Sen’s ‘Ek Din Achanak’, for which she won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.
  • She was also seen in the movie Aaja Nachle’ and the show ‘Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin’.

39th Siachen Day Observed on 13 April 2023

  • The 39th Siachen Day was celebrated by Siachen Warriors Brigade of Fire & Fury Corps on April 13, 2023 with tremendous zeal and enthusiasm.
  • Every year this day is observed to pay solemn tributes to the soldiers who laid down their lives to capture the icy heights of Siachen 38 years ago.
  • The day commemorates the courage and fortitude displayed by Indian Army troops in securing the highest and coldest battlefield in the world.
  • On 13 April 1984, the Indian Army launched ‘Operation MEGHDOOT’ to secure Bilafond La and other passes on the Saltoro Ridgeline, from Pakistani aggression.

International Turban Day 2023: April 13

  • The International Turban Day is celebrated every year on April 13 since 2004 to bring awareness of the strict requirement on Sikhs to put the turban as a mandatory part of their religion.
  • The 2023 Turban Day marks the 554th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev and the festival of Baisakhi.
  • The turban, also known as “dastar” or “pagri” or “pag” refer to the garment worn by both men and some women to cover their heads.
