National

Number of domestic patent filings surpasses international filings for first time in 11 years: Ministry of Commerce

  • As per the data by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the number of domestic patent filings at the Indian patent office exceeded that of international filings for the first time in the last 11 years.
  • During the January-March quarter of 2022, a total of 19796 patent applications were filed, which included 10,706 patents filed by Indian applicants and 9,090 by non-Indian applicants.

Mumbai and Hyderabad recognised as ‘2021 Tree City of the World’ by UN-FAO

  • The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and Arbor Day Foundation have jointly recognised Mumbai and Hyderabad as ‘2021 Tree City of the World’.
  • The two Indian cities have won the recognition for their “commitment to growing and maintaining urban trees and greenery in building healthy, resilient and happy cities”.
  • It must be noted that Hyderabad has been recognised for a second consecutive year. In 2021, Hyderabad was the only city in India to be recognised as a ‘ 2020 Tree City of the World’.
  • Apart from Hyderabad and Mumbai 136 other cities from 21 countries have been recognised in the third edition of the Tree City of the World list. 

Conference

Fourth India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue held in Washington

  • The fourth edition of the ‘2+2’ Ministerial dialogue between India and the United States was held on April 11, 2022 in Washington DC.
  • The dialogue provides a platform for covering all bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest.
  • The Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar lead the Indian delegation.
  • The United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin lead the US delegation. 
  • The First two plus two dialogue was held in New Delhi in September 2018, followed by the Second in Washington DC in 2019, while the third one again in New Delhi in October 2020.

Union Minister Amit Shah inaugurates Conference of Culture and Tourism Ministers ‘Amrit Samagam’

  • The Union Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, inaugurated the “Amrit Samagam”, a conference of tourism and culture ministers of the country, in New Delhi on April 12, 2022.
  • The two-day conference has been organised by the Ministry of Culture on April 12 and 13, 2022, as a part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. 
  • The purpose of this conference is to deliberate on the progress of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav so far, and gather best practices and idea on the strategies to be adopted for the remaining period of the celebration, especially for upcoming crucial initiatives.
  • During the conference, Union Minister for Tourism, Culture and DONER Shri G. Kishan Reddy launched the Utsav Portal website, a digital initiative launched by the Ministry of Tourism, to showcase all the events, festivals and live darshans across India to promote different regions of the country as popular tourist destinations worldwide.

ADB approves $2 million loan to support urban development in Nagaland

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India have inked $2 million Project Readiness Financing (PRF) loan agreement on April 12, 2022.
  • Under this, the Manila- headquartered lender will provide the loan for designing climate resilient urban infrastructure, strengthening institutional capacity and improving municipal resource mobilisation in Nagaland.
  • The PRF loan will be used for designing water supply, sanitation, solid waste management and urban roads in 16 district headquarter towns (DHTs) with climate resilient features and improved access to poor and vulnerable.

International

UNDP & AIM announces $2.2 million in climate action grants for innovators across 19 countries

  • The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the partners of the Adaptation Innovation Marketplace (AIM) have approved $2.2 million in climate action grants for 22 local innovators across 19 countries, including India.
  • The funding will be done through Adaptation Fund Climate Innovation Accelerator (AFCIA) window.
  • The first round of funding will enhance local climate action and accelerate the delivery of targets outlined in the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals.
  • AIM will provide technical support and know-how to the Adaptation Fund Climate Innovation Accelerator.

ACI publishes list of top 10 busiest airports in the world for 2021

  • The Airports Council International (ACI) World [Headquarter- Montreal, Canada] released the list of the top 10 busiest airports worldwide for 2021 on April 11, 2022.
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) has topped the list with 75.7 million passengers.
  • Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) 62.5 million passengers) is second, followed by Denver International Airport (DEN, 58.8 million passengers) at third spot.
  • Among the top 10 airports for passenger traffic, 8 are in the United States with the two remaining in China.

Konkani writer Damodar Mauzo and Assamese poet Nilmani Phookan conferred with 57th and 56th Jnanpith Award respectively

  • Eminent Konkani writer Damodar Mauzo has been conferred with 57th Jnanpith Award for the year 2022.
  • Mauzo is the second Konkani writer after Ravindra Kelekar (42nd edition in 2006) to win Jnanpith award.
  • Apart from this, noted Assamese poet and litterateur Nilmani Phookan has been felicitated with the 56th Jnanpith award for 2021.
  • Phookan is the third Assamese writer to receive the Jnanpith after Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya in 1979 and Mamoni Raisom Goswami in 2000.
  • About Jnanpith Award: The Jnanpith Award is the highest literary award of India, presented annually by the Bharatiya Jnanpith to an author for their “outstanding contribution towards literature”.

NMDC Wins One Gold and One Silver Awards at 80th SKOCH Summit 2022

  • The National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), under Ministry of Steel has won one gold and one silver award at the 80th SKOCH Summit and SKOCH Awards held on April 09, 2022, in New Delhi.
  • The theme for the 80th SKOCH Summit was ‘State of BFSI & PSUs’.
  • NMDC is the largest iron ore producer of India.
  • The Gold Award has been won by NMDC in the social responsibility category for the project ‘Promotion of Technical Education & Skill Development in Dantewada District through NMDC ITI Bhansi’
  • NMDC won the Silver Award in the digital inclusion category for the ‘Project Kalpataru’ for ERP implementation.

Babar Azam of Pakistan and Rachael Haynes of Australia named ICC Players of the Month for March 2022

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the winner of ICC Players of the Month for March 2022 on April 11, 2022.
  • Pakistan captain Babar Azam has been named as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for March 2022.
  • Australia opener Rachael Haynes is named as ICC Women’s Players of the Month for March 2022.

38th Siachen Day Observed on 13 April 2022

  • The 38th Siachen Day was celebrated by Siachen Warriors Brigade of Fire & Fury Corps on April 13, 2022 with tremendous zeal and enthusiasm.
  • Every year this day is observed to pay solemn tributes to the soldiers who laid down their lives to capture the icy heights of Siachen 38 years ago.
  • The day commemorates the courage and fortitude displayed by Indian Army troops in securing the highest and coldest battlefield in the world.
  • On 13 April 1984, the Indian Army launched ‘Operation MEGHDOOT’ to secure Bilafond La and other passes on the Saltoro Ridgeline, from Pakistani aggression.

International Turban Day 2022: April 13

  • The International Turban Day is celebrated every year on April 13 since 2004 to bring awareness of the strict requirement on Sikhs to put the turban as a mandatory part of their religion.
  • The 2022 Turban Day marks the 553rd birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev and the festival of Baisakhi.
  • The turban, also known as “dastar” or “pagri” or “pag” refer to the garment worn by both men and some women to cover their heads.
