Government Launches Biggest Ever Evacuation Exercise ‘Vande Bharat Mission’ to bring Indians Stranded Abroad

  • The Government of India has launched its biggest ever evacuation exercises named the Vande Bharat Mission, to bring home nearly 15,000 Indian nationals stranded abroad due to the coronavirus lockdown.
  • Under the mission, to be undertaken in phased manner, the government will operate 64 flights from 07 May till May 13, 2020, to repatriate its citizens from 12 countries.
  • The 64 flights will include: 10 flights from the UAE, 2 from Qatar, 5 from Saudi Arabia, 7 from UK, 5 from Singapore, 7 from United States, 5 from Philippines, 7 from Bangladesh, 2 from Bahrain, 7 from Malaysia, 5 from Kuwait and 2 flights from Oman.
  • Of the total flights, 15 would bring back people to Kerala, 11 each to Delhi and Tamil Nadu, 7 each to Maharashtra and Telangana, and the rest to Gujarat, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh.

Niti Aayog Launches Campaign ”Surakshit Dada-Dadi & Nana-Nani Abhiyan” to protect senior citizens during COVID-19

  • The Government think tank NITI Aayog has launched a campaign titled ”Surakshit Dada-Dadi & Nana-Nani Abhiyan” to ensure well-being of senior citizens of the country during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The campaign has been launched in association with Piramal Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Piramal Group.
  • The campaign aims to reach over 2.9 million senior citizens in 25 Aspirational Districts across Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, MP, Maharashtra, Rajasthan & UP.
  • Surakshit Dada-Dadi & Nana-Nani Abhiyan will create awareness about various aspects of health and lifestyle of senior citizens, focusing on behaviour change, access to services, early detection & tracking of COVID19 symptoms, preventive measures etc.

Central Launches GARUD Portal to Approve Govt Agencies’ Request to use Private Drones

  • The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have launched a portal named GARUD for fast-track conditional exemptions to government agencies in deploying their own/privately-operated drones to implement the lockdown.
  • GARUD stands for Government Authorisation for Relief Using Drones.
  • The objective of the GARUD portal is to enable state-owned entities in seeking exemption from central government for employing drone operations services, from private firms and individuals, for Covid-19 related prevention work, such as the monitoring of the lockdown implementation.

Andhra Pradesh Unveils Mobile App CMAPP to Monitor agriculture needs of farmers

  • In Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has launched a mobile app CMAPP (Comprehensive Monitoring of Agriculture, Price, and Procurement) to monitor the agriculture needs of farmers.
  • The CMAPP app will display data regarding cost, procurement, and marketing facilities of the farmers for their agriculture produce.
  • The state government has assigned a joint collector in each district to oversee the farming-related issues.

Himachal Pradesh to Launch Awareness Programme ‘Nigah’ to aware family members of migrant returnees

  • The state government of Himachal Pradesh has announced its plan to launch a new programme called Nigah to sensitize and educate the family members of the people coming to the state from other states of the country.
  • Under this programme, a team of ASHA, health and Anganwadi workers would be deployed to create general awareness among the family members of persons arriving from other States regarding the importance of social distancing during home quarantine, so that they could be saved from any possible infection.
  • State government would also take strict action against those individuals who will not follow home quarantine, as this would not only harm their family members but society as well.

Delhi Top State in Internet Penetration Followed by Kerala: IAMAI Report

  • Delhi has emerged as the top most state with the highest Internet penetration rate among all the other states of India, according to a study titled ‘Digital in India’ by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI). The study has been curated by Nielsen and based on IRS data.
  • Delhi is followed by Kerala at second position in terms of internet penetration, means the number of internet users.
  • In terms of cities, Mumbai has registered highest number of Internet users, which is estimated to be 13 million. Delhi is ranked second with 11.3 million, followed by Bengaluru (6.6 million), Kolkata (6.3 million) and Chennai (6 million) respectively.
  • The estimated numbers of users denotes the active internet users above 12 years of age.
  • In terms of age-wise demographics, two-third of Internet users are in the age group of 12-29 years, which is more than 70 percent of Internet users in the rural India.
  • The Eastern states of the country together registered 24% increase in the Internet population in November 2019 compared to March 2019.
  • Overall, India has a total of 504 million active Internet users (accessed Internet in the last one month), who were five years and above as of November 2019.

Biography of Captain Vijayant Thapar Titled ‘Vijayant at Kargil: The Life of a Kargil Hero’ to be Released on May 15

  • The biography of Captain Vijayant Thapar, a fourth-generation army officer, who was martyred in the Kargil war in 1999 at the age of just 22, is soon to be released on 15 May 2020.
  • The e-book titled “Vijyant at Kargil: The Life of a Kargil Hero” has been penned by Vijyant’s father Colonel VN Thapar and writer Neha Dwivedi, a martyr’s daughter herself.
  • The book has been published by Penguin Random House.
  • It gives an insight about the story of a young 22 year old hero, Captain Vijyant Thapar, who not only grew up with the ingrained ethos of service before self, but went on to put his countrymen, his unit and lastly his friends before his own life.

  • Iraq’s Parliament has chosen Mustafa al-Kadhimi as the new Prime Minister of the country.
  • He has assumed charged with effect from 07 May 2020.
  • Mustafa is a former director of the intelligence agency of Iraq, Iraqi National Intelligence Service (INIS).
  • He succeeds Adil Abdul-Mahdi.
