After SBI, Govt nominates IOB for collecting donations for PM Cares Fund

  • Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), has been nominated by the government for the collection of funds of PM-Cares Fund. Till now only State Bank of India was the nominated bank for the same.
  • PM Cares stands for Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM-Cares Fund).
  • The contributions can be made by ECS, RTGS, NEFT, IMPS, cheques and demand drafts drawn in favour of PM-Cares Fund.
  • All such contributions will be entitled to 100 per cent income tax exemption under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.

Naveen Patnaik awarded with ‘Hero to Animals Award’ by PETA India

  • Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik has been conferred with ‘Hero to Animals Award’ by animal rights body PETA India.
  • He has been awarded by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) for allocating funds to feed community animals in Odisha during the lockdown over the novel coronavirus pandemic.

‘Smart Triplets’ Launched As Official Mascots of 19th Asian Games, Hangzhou

  • The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) digitally unveiled the official mascots, of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China on 3rd April 2020.
  • The official mascot comprise of three sporty robots named Congcong, Lianlian and Chenchen, collectively named as the ‘smart triplets’.
  • Mascots: They represents the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Hangzhou in eastern China.
  • The first mascot is yellow colored robot ‘Congcong’ which represents the archaeological ruins of Liangzhu city.
  • The second mascot, Green ‘Lianlian’ represents the West Lake and the name signifies a lake full of lush lotus leaves.
  • The third mascot is ‘Chenchen’, which represents the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, where Blue represents science and technology.
  • Asian Games 2020: The 19th Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou, China from September 10 to 25, 2022.
  • It will be the third Asian Games to be hosted by China following Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010.

2021 World Games Shifted to 2022 to Avoid Clash with Rescheduled 2020 Toyko Olympics

  • The 2021 World Games, which were scheduled to take place in Birmingham, Alabama, from 15–25 July 2021, have now been postponed to 7-17 July, 2022.
  • The games have been pushed back to 2022 to avoid clashing with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which were rescheduled to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The World Games are held every four years and feature 32 sports that are not part of the Olympic program.
  • The World Games are organised and governed by the International World Games Association (IWGA), recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Veteran Indian-origin virologist in South Africa Gita Ramjee Passes Away from coronavirus

  • Gita Ramjee, a world-renowned Indian-origin South African virologist has passed away due to coronavirus complications. She was 63.
  • Gita was an HIV/AIDS expert who specialized in treatment and prevention, especially for women.

International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action: 4 April

  • On 8 December 2005, the UN General Assembly declared 4 April to be observed as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action every year to raise awareness about landmines and progress toward their eradication.
  • The theme for 2020 is “Advancing Protection, Peace and Development.”

National Maritime Day: 5 April

  • In India, the National Maritime Day is observed on 5 April, since 1964.
  • The 2020 marks 57th edition of the annual celebrations.
  • On this day in 1919 navigation history was created when SS Loyalty, the first ship of The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd., traveled from Mumbai to the United Kingdom, a crucial step for India shipping history when sea routes were restricted and controlled by the British.
