Manipur’s Phayeng Village Receives India’s First Carbon Positive Tag

  • A small village, Phayeng, in the North Eastern state of Manipur, has been tagged as India’s first carbon-positive settlement.
  • It is a first of its kind project in the South Asian country.
  • The transformation was done using funds under National Adaptation Fund for Climate Change (NAFCC), a central scheme to support adaptation to climate change impact in various states.
  • A village is given the tag of carbon-positive settlement if it cuts off more carbon than it emits to reduce formation of greenhouse gases and mitigate the effects of climate change.

David Malpass appointed as President of World Bank

  • David Malpass has been elected as the new President of World Bank. He succeeds Jim Yong-Kim who stepped down on February 1.
  • David Malpass is currently Under Secretary of US Treasury for International Affairs and will take charge as World Bank President on April 09, 2019.
  • Kristalina Georgieva was the interim President of the World Bank during this period from February to March. She is the chief executive officer of the World Bank.
  • The appointment of David Malpass was approved by a 25-member executive board.

AIFF President Praful Patel becomes 1st Indian Member of FIFA Executive Council

  • The All India Football Federation (AIFF) President Praful Patel been elected as the member of the FIFA Executive Council during the 29th Asian Football Confederations (AFC) Congress in Kuala Lampur in Malaysia on April 6, 2019.
  • With this, Patel has become the first Indian to become a member of the FIFA Executive Council.
  • His membership in the council will be for four years spanning from 2019 to 2023.
  • He was one of the eight candidates competing for the spot in the election and received 38 votes out of the 46 voting members.
  • Patel is also the Senior Vice President at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
  • India has recently acquired the rights to host the 2020 FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup.

Biography ‘Kundan: Saigal’s Life & Music’ Authored by Sharad Dutt Released

  • The biography of KL Saigal (Kundanlal Saigal), was released on April 4, which marks the 115th birth anniversary of Saigal.
  • The book named ‘Kundan: Saigal’s Life & Music’ has been authored by Sharad Dutt, who is a documentary filmmaker and former DDG of Doordarshan.
  • Saigal was an Indian actor as well as a singer, who is considered as the first superstar of the Hindi film industry.
  • The book has been translated in English by Jyoti Sabharwal of Stellar Publishers.

International Day of Sport for Development and Peace: April 6

  • The “International Day of Sport for Development and Peace” is observed every year on April 6.
  • The day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013, to commemorates the inauguration of the first Olympic games of the modern era held in Athens (Greece) in 1896.
