Important Cabinet Approvals: July 31

  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved following proposals and MoUs on July 31, 2019:
    • India and Bolivia – Approved Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Cooperation in the Exploration and Uses of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes
    • India and BahrainCooperation in the Exploration and Uses of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes.
    • Approved the signing of the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements (UNISA) resulting from mediation by the Republic of India scheduled to be held at Singapore on 7th August, 2019, or at United Nations Headquarters.
    • Extension of the term of the commission constituted under Article 340 of the constitution to examine the issue of Sub-categorization within other Backward Classes in the Central List by six months beyond 31st July, 2019 and upto 31st January, 2020.
    • Setting up of ISRO Technical Liaison Unit (ITLU) at Moscow, Russia at an average annual expenditure of about Rs. 1.50 crore per annum.
    • Approved the proposal of the Department of Fertilizers for fixation of Nutrient Based Subsidy Rates for Phosphatic and Potassic (P&K) Fertilizers for the year 2019-20.

Dharmendra Pradhan Launches Atal Community Innovation Centre (ACIC) Program to Boost Local Innovation

  • Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas & Steel Shri Dharmendra Pradhan launched the Atal Community Innovation Centre (ACIC) in New Delhi on July 31, 2019 and urged NITI Aayog to open innovation Centres in all Gram Panchayats of the country to promote local innovation.
  • ACIC is an initiative by Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), flagship initiative of NITI Aayog, to serve as the bridge between the knowledge base existing in communities and the advanced technical ecosystem existing in the market base to address the needs of society.
  • ACIC programme aims to encourage the spirit of innovation at the community level in specific areas that lack the required infrastructure and facilitating innovation ecosystem.
  • ACIC programme would focus in over 484 districts located in unserved/underserved regions of India.

Mobile Library Buses Launched Under Ghar-Ghar Dastak Ghar-Ghar Pustak Scheme of the Delhi Public Library

  • The Culture and Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel flagged off a mobile library bus service under the “Ghar Ghar Dastak Ghar Ghar Pustak” Scheme of the Delhi Public Library (DPL) on July 31, 2019 in New Delhi.
  • The five-bus mobile library service launched will reach out to readers in Delhi, especially those in slums, resettlement colonies and rural areas.
  • These buses have been procured under CSR (corporate social responsibility) assistance from the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

10 historic monuments to be open from sunrise till 9 p.m

  1. The central government has informed that 10 centrally protected monuments across the country will be open to public from sunrise till 9 p.m. These are:
    1. Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi
    2. Safdarjung Tomb, Delhi
    3. Rajarani Temple, Bhubaneswar,
    4. Dulhadev Temple, Khajuraho,
    5. Shekh Chilli Tomb, Kurukshetra,
    6. Group of Monuments at Pattadakal, Karnataka,
    7. Gol Gumbaj, Karnataka,
    8. Group of Temples in Maharashtra (Markanda),
    9. Man Mahal in Uttar Pradesh (Varanasi) and
    10. Rani ki Baav, Paatan Gujarat.

National Conference on e-Governance 2019 to be held at Shillong

  • The 22nd National Conference on e-Governance 2019 will be held at Shillong, Meghalaya on 8-9, 2019.
  • Theme of the Conference is “Digital India: Success to Excellence”.
  • The Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances (DARPG), in association with Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India and the State Government of Meghalaya will organize the conference

WorldSkills International Competition 2019 to be Held in Russia

  • The WorldSkills International Competition 2019, also referred as the ‘Olympics for Skills’, is scheduled to be held in Kazan, Russia from 22 to 27 August 2019. 
  • The Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India has announced 48-member Indian contingent to represent the country at the biggest showcase of skills excellence in the world.
  • The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) under the aegis of MSDE has been leading India’s delegation at this biennial event since 2011.
  • The programme will be participated by more than 1,500 competitors from 60 countries in 55 skill competitions. India will participate in 44 skills.

India received highest-ever FDI worth $64.37 billion in 2018-19

  • India has received the highest-ever FDI inflow of $64.37 billion during the fiscal year 2018-19.
  • According to the Annual Report 2018-19 of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), foreign direct investments (FDI) worth $286 billion were received in the country in past five years.

London named world’s best student city: QS Rankings – Banglore top Indian

  • London has been named as the world’s best city for students as per the ‘QS Best Student Cities Ranking’. Tokyo is ranked second followed by Melbourne in Australia at 3rd. 
  • Four Indian cities have got a place in the ranking. Banglore is ranked at 81 is the top Indian city, followed by Mumbai at 85, Delhi at 113 and Chennai at 115.

India, UK launch clean air initiative -IfCA in Bengaluru

  • India and UK have launched a joint initiative named Innovating for Clean Air (IfCA) that will provide its stakeholders an opportunity to test interventions related to air quality and EV integration. It was launched in Bengaluru.
  • The programme is led by Innovate UK — part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) — and is funded by the Newton Fund. The key partners for the programme are the Indian Institute of Science, Enzen, Project Lithium, Confederation of Indian Industry, C40 Cities and Clean Air Platform

Rajiv Kumar appointed Finance Secretary

  • Rajiv Kumar has been appointed as the Finance Secretary by virtue of his seniority.
  • Mr. Kumar is the most senior official among the five Secretaries in the Ministry. As per the norm, the most senior IAS officer in the Ministry is designated as the Finance Secretary.
  • He has replaced Subhash Chandra Garg was shunted out of the Ministry and posted as Secretary, Ministry of Power.

Shri Atanu Chakraborty nominated on RBI Central Board

  • The Central Government has nominated Shri Atanu Chakraborty as a Director on the Central Board of Directors of Reserve Bank of India. He is a Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance.
  • He has been nominated in place of Shri Subhash Chandra Garg.
  • Shri Rajiv Kumar, the new Finance Secretary is also a Director on the Central Board of Directors of Reserve Bank of India.

India, Russia sign Rs 1,500 crore deal for R-27 missile

  • India has signed a deal worth around Rs 1,500 crore to acquire R-27 air-to-air missiles from Russia.
  • It will be equipped on the Su-30MKI combat aircraft.
  • The R-27 missile is a medium-to-long-range air-to-air missile developed by Russia for its MiG and Sukhoi series of fighter jets.

Founder of Cafe Coffee Day, V G Siddhartha passes away

  • The founder of cafe chain Café Coffee Day V G Siddhartha has passed away as he committed suicide. He served as the Chairman and Managing Director of CCD.
  • Non-Executive lndependent Director S.V. Ranganath has been named the interim chairman, Nitin Bagmane will be the interim COO.

Economist Subir Gokarn passes away

  • Former RBI deputy governor and economist Subir Vithal Gokarn has passed away at the age of 60 years.
  • He was appointed the deputy governor of the RBI in 2009 for a term of three years. In November 2015, Gokarn was appointed as an executive director on the board of the IMF.
