India ranks fourth in terms of business optimism globally: Grant Thornton Report; Top- Philippines

  • India has been ranked at 4th position in terms of business optimism as per the Grant Thornton’s International Business Report (IBR). 64 percent of corporates are optimistic about India’s economic growth over the next 12 months.
  • The Philippines has topped the chart with 73 percent of respondents being optimistic about economic growth. Vietnam is on second and Indonesia is on the third. 

India Signs 4 MoUs and Offers $100 mn Line of Credit to Benin

  • India and Benin has signed four agreements/MoUs on Cultural Exchange, Cooperation in Export Credit and Investment Insurance, e-VBAB network project, visa exemption for Indian diplomatic/official passports on July 29, 2019.
  • The agreement were signed during first leg of President Ram Nath Kovind’s three-nation visit to Africa.
  • President Kovind is the first Indian head of state to visit the West African nations including The Gambia and Guinea.
  • India has offered a USD 100 million line of credit to Benin to finance its various development projects.
  • An agreement was signed on mutual exemption of visa requirement for holders of diplomatic and official passports.
  • 2 MoUs were signed on tele education program e-vidyabharati and Tele medicine initiative e-Arogyabharati.
  • India will offer free tele-education courses to 15,000 Beninese students and tele-medicine courses to 1000 doctors and paramedics in Africa.
  • Benin has also extended its support for India’s candidature for permanent membership of UN Security Council.

First Ever India-Nepal Logistics Summit Held in Kathmandu

  • Prime Minister of Nepal KP Sharma Oli inaugurated the India-Nepal Logistics Summit in Kathmandu on July 28, 2019.
  • The theme of the summit was “Transforming Logistics Landscape”. 
  • It was the first of its type event which brought together government representatives and the trade community of both nations to discuss issues related to cross-border trade and logistics of both nations.

Odisha Rasagola Gets GI Tag

  • Odisha has finally received the geographical indication tag for its popular dessert rasagola after years of controversy around the sweet.
  • The state has received the GI number 612 for ‘Odisha Rasagola’ in the foodstuff category under Section 16(I) or of authorized Section 17(3)(c) of Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act 1999.
  • The tag has been received after a years-long debate between West Bengal and Odisha over where the sweet had originated. West Bengal got the GI tag in 2017.

MoSPI begins 7th Economic Census from Tripura

  • Government has started the 7th Economic Census from July 29, 2019 from Tripura state. The purpose of Economic Census is to get a complete count of all economic units in India. It will be launched in other states and union territories in August and September. The results are expected to be available by March 2020.
  • The census is conducted by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). This time it is being conducted after a gap of 5 years, the last one was done in 2013. The first Economic Census took place in 1977.
  • Implementing Agency for 7th Economic Census: CSC e-Governance Services India Limited has been selected as the implementation agency for the development of ICT platform system and conduction of fieldwork for the 7th Economic Census. It is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeITY).
  • As per the 6th Economic Census that was conducted in 2013, there were 58.5 million establishments employing around 131 million workers.

Northeast Frontier Railway introduces Pink coaches for female passengers

  • Northeast Frontier Railway zone of Indian Railways has introduced pink coaches in trains to particularly facilitate the female passengers.
  • Only female passenger can travel in the Pink Coach. This has been done to ensure better safety and security of women.
  • As per the Section 58 of the Railways Act, 1989, there has been mention on earmarking of female passengers’ accommodation it trains and it is as per the law.

Reserve Bank relaxes end-use stipulations under ECB for Corporates and NBFCs

  • The Reserve bank of India has relaxed the end-use restrictions relating to external commercial borrowings for Working Capital requirements, General Corporate purposes and Repayment of rupee loans. Now the eligible borrowers will be allowed to raise following ECBs from recognised lenders, except foreign branches/ overseas subsidiaries of Indian banks:
    • ECBs with a minimum average maturity period of 10 years for working capital purposes and general corporate purposes. 
    • ECBs with a minimum average maturity period of 7 years for repayment of Rupee loans availed domestically for capital expenditure. For repayment of Rupee loans availed domestically for purposes other than capital expenditure and for on-lending by NBFCs for the same, the minimum average maturity period of the ECB would have to be 10 years.
    • It has further been decided to permit eligible corporate borrowers to avail ECB for repayment of Rupee loans availed domestically for capital expenditure in manufacturing and infrastructure sector and classified as SMA-2 or NPA, under any one-time settlement arrangement with lenders.

Govt increases authorised capital of IOB by Rs 5k crore to Rs 15,000 crore

  • The government has increased the authorised capital of Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) by Rs 5,000 crore from Rs 10,000 crore to Rs 15,000 crore. 
  • The increase in authorised capital will enable the Bank to take steps to shore up its capital adequacy by way of issue of share capital including in case of further capital infusion by the Government. 
  • Managing Director and chief executive officer of IOB- Karnam Sekar.

Airtel unveils e-governance platform SWAN for Uttar Pradesh

  • Bharti Airtel as designed and implemented a future-ready state wide area network (SWAN) for the state government of Uttar Pradesh as part of the Centre’s e-governance initiative.
  • Deputy Chief Minister of UP Dinesh Sharma launched UPSWAN 2.0, which is one of the largest of its kind in India.
  • UPSWAN 2.0 comprises of 885 points of presence across the state and is designed to provide secure, high-speed connectivity for delivery of government services to citizens over a closed user group network.
  • These include filing of applications for pension and financial aid, registration for employment, issuance of birth and death certificates, application for new or renewal of ration cards, etc.

Egan Bernal of Colombia wins Tour de France title

  • Egan Bernal has won the Tour de France 2019, cycling title. With this, he became the first Colombian to win the title.
  • The 22-year-old Bernal is also the youngest rider to win the race in 110 years.

Collin Morikawa Bags First Win at Barracuda Championship

  • American professional golfer Collin Morikawa claimed his first US PGA title after he birdied the final three holes to win the Barracuda Championship (Reno–Tahoe Open) on July 28.
  • The 22-year-old finished with 47 points. Troy Merritt was the runner up with 44 points.
  • Barracuda Championship is the only US tour event that uses the Modified Stableford scoring system.

International Tiger Day: 29 July 2019

  • International Tiger Day or Global Tiger Day is celebrated every year on July 29 to raise awareness for tiger conservation.
  • It was created in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons : 30 July

  • Every year the World Day Against Trafficking in persons is observed on July 30.
  • It was designated by the UN General Assembly in 2013 to raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights.
  • The 2019 theme for World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is “Human Trafficking: Call Your Government To Action”.

International Day of Friendship: July 30

  • International Day of Friendship (World Friendship Day) takes place on July 30 every year to reserve a day for celebrating friendships and the exchange of gifts between friends.
  • The day was proposed by UNESCO and recognised  by the UN General Assembly in 1997.
