India 4th largest military spender; Top – US- SIPRI Report

  • India was the world’s fourth largest military spender in the year with spending of $66.5 billion on military. There was a rise of 3.1% in the spending. This is according to a report by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)
  • The country with the maximum military spending as per SIPRI is the United States, followed by China on second and Saudi Arabia on the third.

India Ratings predicts India’s GDP growth rate at 7.3% for FY20

  • India Ratings and Research has predicted India’s GDP growth rate prediction for 2019-20 at 7.3%. This is less than its earlier prediction of 7.5%.

Airtel launches music video streaming platform “Wynk Tube”

  • Indian telecom company Bharti Airtel has launched music video streaming platform “Wynk Tube”.
  • The Wynk Tube app will be available to users in 12 Indian regional languages including Kannada, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Bhojpuri.

Jairam Ramesh Authors Biography of Diplomat-Politician V K Krishna Menon

  • Former union minister in Indian National Congress and writer Jairam Ramesh is penning the biography of veteran Indian nationalist, diplomat, and politician Vengalil Krishnan Krishna Menon titled “Chequered Brilliance: The Many Lives of V K Krishna Menon”.
  • The book is likely to be out in the first quarter of 2020.

Bajrang Punia Set to Become First Indian to Wrestle at Madison Square Garden

  • Indian wrestler and Asian champion Bajrang Punia will soon become the first Indian wrestler to fight at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden.
  • USA Wrestling, the national governing body for the sport in the US has invited Bajrang to participate in the “Grapple at the Garden – Beat the Streets” fight night which will be held on May 6.
  • The 25-year-old, who won the 65kg men’s freestyle gold at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2019, will be among top wrestlers selected by the American governing body for the May 6 tournament.

G Sathiyan becomes first Indian to get into top 25 ITTF rankings

  • Indian table tennis player Sathiyan Gnanasekaran has become the first Indian to rank in the top 25 rankings of  ITTF rankings. He was at 24th rank.

International Jazz Day: April 30

  • The International Jazz Day is celebrated annually on April 30 to recognize the power of this music to bring people together as well as raise awareness in the international community of the virtues of jazz as an educational tool.
  • It was declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2011.
  • The day was created on the idea of jazz pianist and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock.
