India Ranks 43rd in IMD World Competitiveness Rankings 2019

  • India has moved up one place to rank 43rd in the 2019 edition of the IMD World Competitiveness Rankings, mainly due to its robust economic growth, a large labour force and its huge market size.
  • The index has been topped by Singapore, followed by Hong Kong and United States at second and third position respectively.
  • Venezuela ranked last in the index at 63rd.
  • The World Competitiveness Rankings, released by IMD Business School, Switzerland was established in 1989.
  • The index uses 235 indicators to rank 63 economies on the basis of their ability to foster an environment where enterprises can achieve sustainable growth, generate jobs and increase welfare for its citizens.

Aroma Mission Launched in Meghalaya

    • The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma launched the Aroma Mission and Processing Unit of Essential Oil at Byrwa in Ri-Bhoi district on May 27, 2019 to boost Agriculture and allied sector in the state.
    • The Aroma mission has been launched for Rs 18 crore to strengthen the livelihood condition of farmers and create employment opportunities in the state.

Pema Khandu Takes Oath as Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister

    • Senior BJP leader Pema Khandu was sworn- in as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh for a second term on May 29, 2019.
    • Arunachal Pradesh Governor Dr. BD Mishra administered the oath of office and secrecy to the council of ministers.
    • Along with Pema Khandu, 11 Cabinet Ministers were also sworn in.  

Naveen Patnaik Sworn in as Chief Minister of Odisha for 5th term

  • Naveen Patnaik, took oath as the Chief Minister of Odisha in Bhubaneswar on May 29, 2019 for the consecutive fifth time.
  • Odisha Governor Prof. Ganeshi Lal administered the oath-taking ceremony.
  • In addition, 11 Cabinet Ministers and 9 other Ministers also took the oath.
  • Patnaik is the only the third Indian chief Minister after Pawan Chamling and Jyoti Basu to win five consecutive terms as Chief Minister of an Indian state.

Facebook Plans to Launch Cyrptocurrency Under the Name GlobalCoin

  • Technology major Facebook is planning to launch its own cryptocurrency, in early 2020, which is likely to be named GlobalCoin.
  • The cryptocurrency is being launched by Facebook under its Secret project “Project Libra” and will require around $1 billion in funding to support the project.
  • Mark Zuckerberg owned social media giant may start its testing by the end of 2019. Initially, the currency would be launched in about a dozen countries.

Sri Lanka Signs Tripartite Agreement with India and Japan for Colombo Port

  • The Government of Sri Lanka has signed a tripartite agreement with India and Japan on May 28, 2019 for development of eastern terminal of Colombo port.
  • Under the agreement, Sri Lanka Port Authority (SLPA) will hold 51 percent majority stake in the port development while combined stake of 49 percent will be held by Japan and India.
  • All the three nations will work together for the development of the Colombo port and contribute to further regional prosperity and stability of global trading networks.
  • Over 70% of India’s transhipment business is handled at Colombo ports.

United States Removes India from its Currency Monitoring List

  • The US Treasury Department has removed India as well as Switzerland from its currency monitoring list of countries having potentially questionable foreign exchange policies. 
  • Removal of India from the currency watch list radar is a positive development, which otherwise could have ultimately led to a tag of being a currency manipulator. 
  • Now nine major trading partners continue to be placed on Treasury’s ‘Monitoring List’ of major trading partners that merit close attention to their currency practices.
  • These countries are: China, Japan, Germany, South Korea, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore.

    Countries which indulge in manipulating the currency exchange rate for gaining unfair competitive advantage in international trade often end up with the tag of a currency manipulator.

TNAU-VC Prof N Kumar Recognised by Confederation of Horticulture Associations of India

  • Prof N Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), has been conferred with the ‘Life Time Recognition Award’ by the Confederation of Horticulture Associations of India on May 28, 2019 during the International Conference on Innovative horticulture at Pantnagar, Uttarakhand.
  • He was recognised for his outstanding contribution in the field of horticulture and academic leadership focussed on human resource development in agriculture.
  • Confederation of Horticulture Associations of India is a privately incorporated company involved in Agricultural and animal husbandry service activities, except veterinary activities.

Criiio Campaign Launched by ICC to Celebrate 2019 Men’s World Cup

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) has launched Criiio campaign on the eve of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019.
  • The campaign aims to bring together hundreds of millions of fans from around the world and celebrate the magnificent diversity of cricket.
  • ICC has launched #criiio and website www.criiio.com for this social cricket tribe.
  • It calls on around 460 million people playing cricket globally to join this criiio tribe by sharing pictures and videos on #criiio or its website regarding where and how they play cricket across the world.
  • Criiio is first in a series of programs that will be launched by the ICC over the next 12 months to connect and grow the hundreds of millions of cricketers around the world.
