Bill & Melinda Gates tops World’s 50 Greatest Leaders List by Fortune Magazine for 2019

  • The 6th edition of the Fortune Magazine’s annual World’s 50 Greatest Leaders List for the year 2019 has been topped by Bill & Melinda Gates, for their work with charitable organisation Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
  • New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is second in the list followed by US special counsel Robert Mueller.

Arunachalam Muruganantham, Creator of Low-cost Sanitary Napkins, Named in Fortune’s World Leaders List

  • Coimbatore based Arunachalam Muruganantham, inventor of a low-cost sanitary napkins, has been featured on Fortune magazine’s list of world’s 50 greatest leaders.
  • He has been ranked 45 in the list.
  • He was also awarded a Padma Shri in 2016 for his initiative.
  • Muruganantham’s effort to normalise sanitary napkins in rural households was documented in Akshay Kumar-starrer film Padman and in the documentary Period. End of Sentence, which recently won the Oscar.

Mizoram Kid who Rushed Injured Chick to Hospital Wins PETA Compassionate Kid Award

  • Derek C Lalchhanhima, Mizoram based 6 year old boy, who became an overnight sensation on the internet after a photo of him with an injured chick in hospital went viral, has been awarded the ‘Compassionate Kid’ award by PETA India for being an inspiration to other children.
  • After accidentally running over the chick with his cycle, Lalchhanhima rushed the bird to a hospital with all the money he had (Rs 10) to ensure it got medical treatment.

India Wins 13 Medals at 2019 Asian Boxing Championship in Thailand

  • The ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships was held in Bangkok, Thailand from April 17-28, 2019.
  • This was the first time when both the Women’s and Men’s Championship took place simultaneously at the Asian Championships.
  • India ended the event with 13 medals which included 2 gold, four silver and seven bronze medals.

Bajrang Punia Claims Gold at 2019 Asian Wrestling Championships

  • The 2019 Asian Wrestling Championships was held in Xi’an, China from April 23 to April 28, 2019.
  • India won 14 medals (1-5-8) to be placed at fifth position in the medal table which was topped by Iran with 14 (9-0-5) medals.
  • Bajrang Punia claimed his Asian Championship crown by winning gold medal for India in the 65-kg men’s freestyle category by defeating Kazakhstan’s Sayatbek Okassov 12-7.

  • Vasanthi Stanley was a Rajya Sabha member representing the DMK from 2008- 2014.

Former Ethiopian President Negasso Gidada Passes Away

  • Former Ethiopian president Negasso Gidada passed away in Germany after undergoing medical treatment for an unspecified illness. He was 75.
  • Negasso was the president of Ethiopia between 1995 and 2001.
  • He was the first head of state after Ethiopia adopted a new constitution transforming the country into a federal state.

Former Indian Footballer Pungam Kannan Passes Away at 80

  • Former India footballer Poongam Kannan has passed away due to prolonged illness. He was 80.
  • Kannan played total 14 matches for India in Mohun Bagan (8 years) and East Bengal (2) and represented the country at the 1966 Bangkok Asian Games and 1968 Meredeka Cup before retiring in 1982.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work: April 28

  • The World Day for Safety and Health at Work is observed annually on 28 April to raise awareness for promoting safe, healthy and decent work.
  • The day is promoted by the International Labour Organization (ILO)  since 2003 to prevent accidents and illnesses at work.
