Prem Singh Golay Sworn in as New Chief Minister of Sikkim

  • Prem Singh Tamang, better known as PS Golaytook oath as the New Chief Minister of Sikkim on May 27, 2019.
  • He succeeds outgoing Chief Minister Pawan Chaling to become the 6th CM of the state.
  • The Sikkim Karantikari Morcha (SKM) President, Golay (51) and his council of ministers were administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor of Sikkim Mr. Ganga Prasad in Palzor Stadium at Gangtok

US President Donald Trump Becomes World’s First Leader to Meet New Japanese Emperor

  • The President of United States, Donald Trump, made history on May 27, 2019 by becoming the first leader in the world to meet with the new emperor of Japan.
  • The new emperor of Japan, Emperor Naruhito ascended to the throne on May 1, to begin the new era of the country known as “Reiwa,” or “beautiful harmony.”
  • The US President is on a four-day state visit to Japan.

Ind-Ra Lowers GDP Estimate for FY 19 to 6.9 Percent

  • The India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) expects India’s GDP growth rate to be 6.9 percent during 2018-19 as against the advance estimate of 7 percent.
  • Further, it expects that the fourth quarter (January to March 2018) GDP growth of FY19 will decelerate to 6.3 percent from 6.6 percent in the third quarter (October to December 2018).
  • It said that 2018-19 will be the second consecutive year of an economic slowdown in India. The GDP growth was 7.2 per cent during 2017-18.

DRDO Conducts Successful Test Firing of Akash-1S Defence Missile System

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the second test firing of the medium range Akash-1S surface to air defence missile system in Balasore off the Odisha coast on May 27, 2019.
  • Akash-1S is a new version of the missile fitted with an indigenously developed seeker, capable of striking down enemy fighter jets, air-to-surface missiles as well as ballistic missiles and drones very effectively.

NRL Facilitates Group Insurance Cover for Kaziranga National Park Staff

  • The state-owned refinery in Assam, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has initiated a group insurance cover for the courageous forest staff of the Kaziranga National Park (KNP), Assam, who often face attacks from wild animals as well as poachers.

Key Features of the Policy

  • The Group Personal Accident Insurance Policy has been launched for 1,129 forest staff.
  • Provide cover for death or bodily injury, resulting solely and directly from accident caused by external violent and visible means.
  • Insured sum: Rs 5 lakh per insured person/nominee
  • Weekly benefit of up to Rs 5,000 for maximum 104 weeks for temporary disablement.
  • Insured amount can be directly claimed from National Insurance Company Ltd, Golaghat.
  • Policy will be effective from April 1, 2019 for a year-term initially, to be further extended on yearly basis

Samiya & Maisnam Clinches Junior Badminton Titles

  • In the Yonex-Sunrise All-India Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament held from May 21-26, 2019 in Chennai, Manipur boy Maisnam Meiraba outplayed Aakash Yadav of Delhi 21-9, 12-7 to clinch the Under-19 Boys Singles title.
  • In the U-19 Girls Singles, No. 5 seed Samiya Imad Farooqui of Telangana clinched the title.

Rahi Sarnobat & Saurabh Chaudhary Bag Gold Medals in ISSF Munich World Cup

  • Saurabh Chaudhary won the gold medal in 10m Air Pistol Event at the ISS Shooting World Cup in Munich on May 27, 2019
  • This is the second gold of the season for the 17-year-old sensation. The first was secured in New Delhi tournament.
  • Indian shooter Rahi Sarnobat also bagged the top podium spot in the 25 metre pistol event at the ISSF World Cup 2019 in Munich.
  • With this,the total gold won by India has now reached three. The first gold was won by Apurvi Chandela in 10 m air rifle event.

Lewis Hamilton Lifts Monaco Grand Prix

  • The Mercedes Formula 1 Champion Lewis Hamilton won the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix. This is the straight 6th win of Mercedes this year.
  • Of the total 6 races held this season, this was the fourth win for Lewis.
  • Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel stood second while Mercedes’s Valtteri Bottas was in third followed by Red Bull’s Verstappen in fourth.

Veteran Filmmaker and Action Choreographer Veeru Devgan Passes Away

  • Renowned film director and one of the most celebrated action and stunts choreographer in Bollywood, Veeru Devgan, passed away on May 27, 2019 suffering from age-related issues. He was 85.
  • Veeru Devgan was the father of Bollywood’s famous actor Ajay Devgan.
  • He has choreographed fight and action scenes in over 80 Hindi films and made his debut with 1999 film Hindustan Ki Kasam.

Nobel Prize Winning Physicist Murray Gell-Man Passes Away

  • Nobel laureate and American physicist, Murray Gell-Mann, passed away at the age of 89.
  • He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1969 for his work on the theory of elementary particles.
