Govt launches Pradhan Mantri Laghu Vyapari Maan-dhan Yojana for shop keepers

  • The Central Government has launched a pension scheme named Pradhan Mantri Laghu
    Vyapari Maan-dhan Yojana (PM-LVMY) for self-employed and working as shop owners. 
  • The scheme is an extension of PM Shram Yogi Maan-dhan Yojana.
  • The PM-LVMY will provide a minimum monthly pension of Rs 3000 after the beneficiary attains the age of 60 years. The pension amount varies with the amount invested by beneficiary. 
  • Beneficiary: self-employed and working as shop owners, retail traders, rice mill owners, oil
    mill owners, workshop owners, commission agents, brokers of real estate, owners of small hotels, restaurants and other
    Laghu Vyaparis. 
  • Eligibility: annual turnover should be less than Rs 1.5 crore. 
  • Contribution by Beneficiary: The contribution is based on age. The early one joins, the less installment he/she has to pay. The Central Government shall also contribute to the Pension Fund the equal amount as contributed by an eligible
    subscriber. 
  • The scheme has been launched by the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Account Aggregator Body ‘Sahamati’ Announced

  • Nandan Nilekani has announced an industry body called “Sahamati” which will help individuals and small businesses share their digital financial data with third-parties in a safe and secure manner. He is the former chairman of UIDAI.
  • It is based on the ‘Account Aggregator’ ecosystem. The ‘Account Aggregator’ (NBFC-AA) is a new class of NBFC approved by the RBI in 2016, whose primary responsibility is to facilitate the transfer of user’s financial data with their explicit consent.
  • The Account Aggregator framework, in theory, should allow for the seamless sharing of data between financial bodies of all kinds centered around user consent (i.e ‘Sahamati’).
  • Sahamati has been formed as a Section 8 non-profit. Sahamati will be headed by former journalist BG Mahesh. Sahamati will apply for the SRO (self-regulatory organisation) licence with the RBI, which will give it a self-governing body status.

India’s First Bullet Train Project To Be Completed By 2023

  • Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has announced that the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR), popularly known as the country’s first Bullet Train Project will be completed by the year 2023.
  • The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 1,08,000 crore and is being undertaken by National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), with the financial and technical assistance from the Government of Japan.

High-level committee formed to strategise preparations for 2020, 2024 Olympics; Head- Kiren Rijiju

  • A high-level committee has been constituted to coordinate and strategise the preparation for the 2020 and 2024 Olympics. The committee has 10 members and is headed by the Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.
  • The objective of the committee is to optimize the performance of the Indian athletes in the Olympics and other high-level games.
  • The committee includes some great sportsperson like Leander Paes and Gagan Narang.

India’s first dragon blood-oozing tree discovered in Assam

  • A 3 member team of researchers led by Assam forest officer Jatindra Sarma has discovered India’s first dragon blood-oozing tree in Assam. The tree is named Dracaena cambodiana.
  • The sap of this tree turns bright red after coming in contact with air. The tree has been used since ancient time as medicine, body oil, varnish, incense and dye.
  • The team’s report has been published in the latest issue of the Journal of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas.

Lt Gen Paramjit Singh to be new DGMO of Army

  • Lt Gen Paramjit Singh will be the next Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of the Indian Army.
  • He will replace the present DGMO Lt Gen Anil Chauhan from October 15, 2019. Presently Lt Gen Paramjit Singh is the General Officer Commanding of the Army’s Nagrota-based XVI Corps.

Apple acquires Intel phone modem business for $1 billion

  • Apple has announced the acquisition of chip-maker Intel’s smartphone modem business for $1 billion. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2019.
  • With this, Apple will enter the 5G business and focus on developing technology for the 5G network

GST rate on all Electric Vehicles reduced from 12% to 5%

  • Government has reduced the GST rate on Electric Vehicles(EVs) from 12% to 5%. The rate will be applicable from August 01, 2019.
  • The GST on charger or charging stations for EVs has been reduced from 18% to 5%.
  • It is pertinent to note the Government of India has set a target for 30% electric vehicles by 2030.

Kapil Dev-led CAC to pick Team India’s next cricket coach

  • A Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) that is headed by former captain Kapil Dev will select the new coach of Indian Cricket Men’s Team.
  • The decision was taken by the Committee of Administrators (COA). CAC has three members including Kapil Dev, the other two are former women’s captain Shantha Rangaswamy and former men’s coach Anshuman Gaekwad.

  • A book titled “Indo-Pak Relations: Beyond Pulwama and Balakot” authored by U.V. Singh has been released.
  • The book was released by Former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh.

Bhakti Kulkarni retains national women’s chess title

  • Defending champion Bhakti Kulkarni retained her title in the 46th National Women Chess Championship that she played against Pratyusha Bodda of Andhra Pradesh.
  • She retained the title as the finals resulted in a draw.

3rd edition of Khelo India to be held in Guwahati

  • Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has announced that the 3rd edition of ‘Khelo India’ Games will be held in Guwahati, Assam.
  • The event will be held from January 18, 2020 to January 30, 2020. Khelo India is national level multidisciplinary games in India held for two categories, mainly U17 years school students and U21 college students.
