RBI extends deadline for legal entity identification for non-derivative markets

  • The Reserve Bank of India has extended the deadline for market participants for the implementation of Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) for participation in non-derivative markets.
  • The timeline for the LEI system in non-derivative markets  (for only phase 1 and phase 2) are extended as under:

RBI extends ombudsman scheme to non-deposit taking NBFCs

  • The Reserve Bank of India has extended the NBFC Ombudsman Scheme 2018 to Non-Deposit Taking Non-Banking Financial Companies with assets size of Rupees 100 crore or above.
  • NBFC’s excluded from the ambit of NBFC Ombudsman:
    • Non-Banking Financial Company – Infrastructure Finance Company (NBFC-IFC),
    • Core Investment Company (CIC),
    • Infrastructure Debt Fund-Non-Banking Financial Company (IDF-NBFC) and
    • an NBFC under liquidation
  • Offices of the Non-Banking Financial Companies Ombudsman are present in four metro centers viz. Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi for handling complaints.
  • Maximum Award under NBFC Ombudsman: Rs 10 lakh

SEBI reduces Net worth Requirements for Clearing Corporations in IFSC to Rs 100 Crore

  • SEBI has announced that the minimum Net worth Requirements for Clearing Corporations in International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) over a period of three years from the commencement of operations should be at least Rs 100 Crore. This has been reduced from Rs 300 crore earlier.
  • However, the minimum net worth requirement for Clearing Corporations in International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) over a period of three years is still Rs 50 crore.

Canara Bank launches ‘Webassurance’ with 4 life insurance products

  • Public Sector Bank, Canara Bank in association with its life insurance partner, Canara HSBC Oriental Bank of Commerce Life Insurance has announced the launch of ‘Webassurance’.
  • ‘Webassurance’ will enable the bank’s customer to purchase life insurance products from the bank’s website. Four life insurance products of Canara HSBC OBC Life would be made available to customers of Canara Bank.
  • Canara HSBC OBC Life is jointly owned by two public sector banks Canara Bank (51 percent) and Oriental Bank of Commerce (23 per cent) and HSBC Insurance (Asia Pacific) Holdings (26 per cent).

HDFC Bank and Max Bupa launch ‘AnyTimeHealth’ machines to distribute health insurance products

  • HDFC Bank and Max Bupa (insurance company) have launched a ‘‘AnyTimeHealth (ATH)’ machines.
  • ATH machine is completely automated, technology-based model which allows customers to avail health assessment and buy a policy instantly, without any manual intervention.
  • In the phase-1, 15-20 ATH machines will be installed at HDFC Bank branches across multiple cities.

IRDAI Constitutes Committee Under Suresh Mathur to Review Microinsurance Regulatory Framework

  • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has set up a 13-member committee to review the regulatory framework on microinsurance and recommend measures to increase the demand for these insurance products.
  • IRDAI Executive Director Suresh Mathur will be the Chairman of the committee.

CPWD Forms M K Sharma Led Panel to Formulate Design Policy for Building Construction

  • The Central Works Public Department (CPWD) has constituted an 8 member expert committee under the chairmanship of CPWD’s Additional Director General M K Sharma, to formulate a design policy for building construction and infrastructure development.
  • The design policy will guide engineers in construction of buildings and infrastructure development and thus revive building construction and infrastructure development at all levels in the CPWD.
  • The CPWD is the largest construction agency of the central government under the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry that constructs most of the government’s buildings across the country, erects fences on the country’s international borders, among others.

Indian Army Inks Pact with NHPC to Construct Tunnels on China & Pakistan Borders

  • The Indian Army has signed an MoU with National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPC) on April 25 to construct tunnels on borders with China and Pakistan to store ammunition and other war-related equipment.
  • The project includes construction of three tunnels on China border while one will be built along the Pakistan border.
  • Since it is difficult to move heavy equipment in the mountainous region bordering China due to lack of infrastructure development, the tunnel will strengthen the defensive capabilities of the Army as well as protect the ammunition and other stored equipment from the air-strikes and detection by the enemy satellite.

Microsoft Becomes the World’s Third 1 Trillion-Dollar Company

  • Satya Nadella led Microsoft passed the market cap of $1 trillion on April 25, 2019 to become the world’s most valuable tech firm surpassing Apple Inc’s $980 billion market capitalization.
  • With this, it also became the only third US company to hit the $1 trillion USD market cap.
  • Seattle-based tech giant Microsoft has now joined the elite trillionaire’s club which includes only Apple and Amazon.
  • In 2018, Apple was the first company to become world’s first trillion dollar tech company followed by Amazon.

Abhishek Verma wins gold medal in ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup

  • Indian shooting champions, Abhishek Verma has won his first World Cup gold medal at the ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup in the 10m Air Pistol Men category.
  • With this, he has also confirmed his Tokyo Olympics Quota in the men’s 10m air pistol event.
  • ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup is being held in Beijing, China and will continue till April 29, 2019.

Gaganjeet Bhullar wins outstanding achievement as player award

  • Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar has won the outstanding achievement as a player award at the 4th edition of the Annual India Golf Industry Association (GIA) awards. It was held in New Delhi.
  • Vijay Divecha and Nonita Lal Qureshi were awarded for their contribution to golf coaching

Claire Polosak becomes the First woman umpire in men’s ODI Cricket

  • Claire Polosak from Australia has become the first woman umpire in the men’s ODI.
  • She was the umpire in the ICC World Cricket League Division 2 match between Oman and Namibia held on April 27, 2019.
  • She was also the first woman umpire to officiate in a men’s domestic List A game in 2017. She is 31 years old.
