G C Murmu, R K Mathur appointed lieutenant governor of J&K and Ladakh respectively

  • Government has appointed the lieutenant governor for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh that will come into existence from October 31, 2019. The new and the first lieutenant governor of these two UTs are:
    • Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Girish Chandra Murmu
    • Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Radha Krishna Mathur
  • The two Union Territories were created after the bifurcation of the state of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5.
  • Satya Pal Malik, the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, has been appointed as the Governor of Goa. He will take over from Mridula Sinha.
  • BJP Kerala unit president PS Sreedharan Pillai has been named the new governor of Mizoram. Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi has been holding the additional charge of Mizoram.
  • Dineshwar Sharma, has been moved to Lakshadweep as the administrator.

India France joint Army exercise – “Ex Shakti -2019” to be held in Rajasthan

  • Indian Army and Army of France will carry out counter-terrorism drills under the “Exercise Shakti 2019” that will be held in Rajasthan at Mahajan Field Firing Ranges.
  • The exercise will be held from October 31 to November 13 and will focus on counter-terrorism operations in the backdrop of semi-desert terrain under United Nations Mandate.

IRDAI forms working group to revisit the product structure of title insurance; Head- T L Alamelu

  • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) has set a 12 membered working group to revisit the product structure of title insurance.
  • The panel will be headed by T L Alamelu.
  • Title Insurance: Title insurance is an insurance of indemnity. It basically provides indemnity to developers and the subsequent homeowners of the property against losses and risks related to defects in the title of the property.

Irdai sets up panel to evaluate application under Regulatory Sandbox; Head- S Sadagopan

  • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has set up an eight-member committee to evaluate applications filed under the Regulatory Sandbox approach to promote innovative ideas to foster growth in insurance sector.
  • The committee will be headed by International Institute of Information Technology (Bangalore) Director S Sadagopan.
  • Regulatory Sandbox (RS) refers to live testing of new products or services in a controlled/test regulatory environment for which regulators may permit certain relaxations for the limited purpose of testing.

Ilham Tohti Wins European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize 2019

  • The European Parliament has awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Uighur economist, Ilham Tohti.
  • The 49-year-old Tohti, who is held in prison by China, has been recognized for his effort fighting for the rights of China’s Uighur minority and the implementation of regional autonomy laws in China.
  • He will receive the award on December 18 at a ceremony in the French city of Strasbourg.
  • What is Sakharov Prize? Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, commonly known as Sakharov Prize, is European Parliament’s top human rights prize.
  • The prize honours individuals and groups of people who have dedicated their lives to the defense of human rights and freedom of thought

Jasprit Bumrah, Mandhana win Wisden India Almanack ‘Cricketer of the Year’ award

  • Indian cricketer Jasprit Bumrah and Batswoman Smriti Mandhana are the two Indian names among the five winners of the Wisden India Almanack Cricketer of the Year award.
  • The other three winners are: Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman, Sri Lanka’s Dimuth Karunaratne and Afghanistan Rashid Khan.
  • Wisden India Hall of Fame Stalwarts Gundappa Viswanath and Lala Amarnath
  • Wisden India Book of the Year “Cricket Country: The Untold History of the First All India Team” by Prashant Kidambi.

Sports journalist and author K R Wadhwaney passes away

  • Veteran sports journalist and author K R Wadhwaney passed away at the age of 90 years.
  • Wadhwaney was the Sports Editor of the Indian Express newspaper. He worked as a freelance writer for several Indian newspapers after his retirement.

Former Gujarat CM Dilip Parikh passes away at 82

  • Former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Dilip Parikh passed away at the age of 82 years.
  • Parikh served as the 13th Chief Minister of Gujarat between October 1997 and March 1998.
