Railway’s first printing press heritage gallery opened in Mumbai

  • The Western Railway (WR) has opened to the public the first printing press heritage gallery of the Indian Railways at Mahalaxmi, Mumbai.
  • Western Railway Mahalaxmi General Stores Depot (GSD) has become the first in Indian Railways to portray a heritage gallery of the printing and allied machines used in the Western Railway Printing Press

UKEIRI Mobility Programme: Study in India initiative launched by UK

  • A “UKEIRI Mobility Programme: Study in India” initiative has been launched by Universities UK International (UUKi) and British Council India to support Britain’s universities to collaborate with Indian Universities.
  • The initiative aims to generate up to 200 opportunities for undergraduate students at UK universities to visit India by March 2021.
  • The programme will be funded by the UK and Indian governments as part of Phase 3 of the UK-India Education Research Initiative (UKEIRI)

Govt sets target for 40,000 MW of Rooftop Solar projects by 2022

  • The Central Government has set a target of installing 40,000 MW of Rooftop Solar (RTS) projects by the year 2022. This includes the installation of RTS on the rooftop of houses.
  • Apart from this as on July 23, 2019, Gujarat is the leader amongst the states in terms of solar rooftop installations.

ADB sanctions Rs 1,925 cr power project in Tripura

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned a Rs 1,925 crore project for up-gradation of power generation and distribution in Tripura.
  • The project has been sanctioned for upgrading capacity of 63 MW Rokhia Project to 120 MW at an estimated cost of Rs 699.80 crore and modernizing Gumti Hydro Electric Project at an estimated cost of Rs 1225.88 crore.

IIT Kharagpur team develops app CARE4U for elderly people

  • A team of students of IIT Kharagpur has developed an app named ‘CARE4U’ which will inform the caregiver when the elderly person falls down with the exact location.
  • The network-based fall detection algorithm in the app installed on the phone of the elderly can detect whether the elderly has fallen down.
  • If there is a fall, it automatically calls the caregiver and emergency services along with the exact location of the elderly person.

Priya Priyadarshini Jain wins ‘Indian Woman of Influence Award’

  • The House of Lords (United Kingdom Parliament, London) has awarded Priya Priyadarshini Jain with ‘Indian Woman of Influence’ award.
  • The award recognized the power of Indian women residing in different parts of the world.
  • Priya is a social entrepreneur, fashionista and philanthropist.

DDP Dashboard launched to provide defence production

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched a web page “DDP dashboard” that will provide real-time information related to defence production to the public. DDP stands for Department of Defence Production.
  • Information related to defence production, exports, offsets, Make II projects and patents filed will be available on the dashboard. The dashboard can be accessed at ddpdashboard.gov.in

Dejan Papic (Canada) Appointed As India’s Chief Table Tennis Coach

  • Dejan Papic of Canada has been appointed as the chief coach of India’s table tennis team.
  • The Indian Table Tennis team has been playing without a coach since last year. 

Mark Esper appointed as Chief of Pentagon

  • Mark Esper has been appointed as the Chief of Pentagon i.e the US defense secretary. He is the 27th Defence Secretary of US.
  • Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense.

BCCI approves Indian Cricketers Association

  • The BCCI has approved the Indian Cricketers Association (ICA). The ICA is an association of ex-cricketers and will look after the interest of former cricket players.
  • BCCI has also clarified that, until further notice of the BCCI entity other than the ICA will be accorded recognition by the BCCI as an association of ex-cricketers.
  • Former India cricketers Kapil Dev, Ajit Agarkar and Shantha Rangaswamy are the directors at ICA.

Aaykar Diwas (Income Tax Day) celebrated by CBDT on July 24

  • The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) observed the 159th Income Tax Day i.e. AaykarDiwas on 24th July, 2019.
  • Income Tax Dayday is celebrated on July 24, as on 24 July 1980 Income Tax was introduced for the first time in India by Sir James Wilson. The purpose of this tax was to compensate for the losses incurred by the British regime during the first war of independence against British Rule.
  • CBDT has also launched “Kardaata e-Sahyog Abhiyaan” to assist taxpayers to e-file their returns and discharge other tax-related obligations.
