India ranked at 52 in Global Innovation Index 2019; Top- Switzerland

  • India has been ranked at 52 out of 129 countries in the Global Innovation Index 2019. Switzerland has topped the Index. India has moved up 5 spots from the last years rank of 57.
  • The Global Innovation Index 2019 is published annually by Cornell University, INSEAD and the UN World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and GII Knowledge Partners.
  • This year in 2019, India hosted the launch of the GII 2019. Shri Piyush Goyal presented the results along with WIPO Director General Francis Gurry.

Karnataka CM, HD Kumaraswamy resigns after losing trust vote

  • HD Kumaraswamy the Chief Minister of Karnataka has submitted his resignation to the Governor of Karnataka as he failed to pass the trust vote of the assembly.
  • Till the time a new Chief Minister is not appointed, he will continue as caretaker CM of Karnataka.
  • Now the JD(S)-Congress government in Karnataka has officially come to end. KD Kumaraswamy represents the Janata Dal (Secular) party.

Yes Bank launches “Smart Edge for MSMEs” programme for MSME loans

  • Yes Bank has launched a program named “Smart Edge for MSMEs” under which it will offer secured working capital loan between Rs 1 crore to Rs 3 crore to MSME.
  • The loan will be in the form of overdraft, letter of credit, and financial bank guarantees. This is a first-of-its-kind surrogate lending model for MSME.
  • For this programme, MSMEs would have to furnish their GST returns and operative bank account statements for the last 12 months along with the KYC document for assessment. Collateral acceptable to the bank will be taken as security for the loan.

‘SB Challenger’ campaign launched by Corporation Bank

  • Corporation Bank has launched a campaign named ‘SB Challenger’ to promote its Savings Bank Account base. The campaign will run till August 23, 2019.
  • The campaign is aimed at attracting customers under the bank’s premium savings account variants.

London Becomes World’s First National Park City

  • London has become the world’s first National Park City in recognition of its open spaces, waterways and natural environment.
  • London is celebrating its achievement with a week of 300 free National Park City Festival events across London’s green spaces, wildlife habitats, green rooftops and waterways.
  • The declaration was made this week by the National Park City Foundation

Ehsan Mani appointed as Chair of ICC’s Financial Committee

  • Ehsan Mani, the Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been appointed as the Chairperson of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Financial and Commercial Affairs Committee.
  • The appointment was made by ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar at the ICC Annual Conference.

GoM on sexual harassment at workplace reconstituted with Amit Shah as head

  • Central government has reconstituted the Group of Ministers(GoM) on preventing sexual harassment at workplace. Home Minister of India, Amit Shah will head the panel.
  • He will replace Rajnath Singh as the head. The other members of the committee are Nirmala Sitharaman (Finance Minister), Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ (HRD Minister) and Smriti Irani (Women and Child Development Minister ).

Keshav Dutt & Prasun Banerjee Selected for Mohun Bagan Ratna 2019

  • Former India Football Captain Prasun Banerjee and two-time Olympic gold medallist Keshav Dutt has been chosen for the ‘Mohun Bagan Ratna’ 2019.
  • They will be given the award on July 29 during the annual day celebrations of the ‘Mohun Bagan Day’.
  • The Mohun Bagan’s executive committee has for the first time decided to confer their highest honour to a non-footballer.
  • Every year on July 29 ‘Mohun Bagan Day’ is observed because on this day in 1911, the Mariners became the first club to defeat a British club, East Yorkshire Regiment, and lift the IFA Shield.

India’s first Lightest and indigenous Bullet Proof Jacket ‘Bhabha Kavach’ gets MHA nod

  • India’s Lightest Bullet Proof Jacket‘Bhabha Kavach’ by Ordnance Factory Board was launched at the International Police Expo 2019.
  • This jacket has got the nod from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
  •  The jacket has been developed indigenously and is powered with nano technology from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).

PM releases the book “Chandra Shekhar – The Last Icon of Ideological Politics”

  • Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, released the book titled  “Chandra Shekhar – The Last Icon of Ideological Politics”.
  • The book is authored by Shri Harivansh (Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha) and Shri Ravi Dutt Bajpai.
  • The book is based on the life of Chandra Shekhar who served as the eighth Prime Minister of India.

Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev dies after a boxing fight

  • Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev has died from brain injuries sustained during his fight with Subriel Matias.
  • He was also known as “Mad Max”.
