HDFC Bank conducts ‘Traffic Paathshala’ in Thiruvananthapuram

  • HDFC Bank, in partnership with the Thiruvananthapuram Police, has launched a campaign named ‘Traffic Paathshala to make roads safer by spreading awareness about the do’s and don’ts of road safety.
  • While motorists found observing traffic discipline would be rewarded with a token of appreciation, those found violating it will be enrolled in the ‘Traffic Paathshala’ and informed about the do’s and don’ts of road safety.

NTPC and Power Grid sign MoU for India’s National Electricity Discom

  • NTPC and Power Grid Corporation of India the two leading public sector companies have formed a Joint Venture to set up National Electricity Distribution Company.
  • This would bring more competition in the power distribution sector with more than one power supplier.

NASA’s First Astrobee Robot “Bumble” Starts Flying Under Its Own Power in Space

  • A cube-shaped free-flying robot named ‘Bumble’ has become the first Astrobee robot to fly under its own power in space.
  • NASA dispatched two of the three Astrobee robots to the International Space Station in April 2019. Bumble is the first one to take the flight.
  • Other Astrobee robot dispatched is named ‘Honey’ while the third robot ‘Queen’ will be dispatched in July 2019.
  • These Astrobee are free-flying robot system to help researchers in testing new technologies in zero gravity and perform routine work alongside astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Anupam Kher pens autobiography ‘Lessons Life Taught Me, Unknowingly’

  • Bollywood actor Anupam Kher has penned his autobiography titled  ‘Lessons Life Taught Me, Unknowingly’.
  • The actor believes that the book can be perceived as an inspiration for those who live in small towns or even big cities, come from the lower strata and do not have many resources.

Indian women’s hockey team defeats Japan to win FIH Series Finals

  • India team won the women’s FIH Series Finals hockey tournament by beating hosts Japan 3-1. The finals was held at the Hiroshima Hockey Stadium, Japan.
  • Rani Rampal was adjudged the best player of the tournament while Gurjit emerged the top-scorer.

Roger Federer Wins Halle Open 2019

  • Tennis player Roger Federer has won the 2019 Halle Open by defeating David Goffin 7-6(2), 6-1.
  • With this Federer has won this title 10th time. 

Lewis Hamilton wins French Grand Prix F1 2019

  • British racing driver, Lewis Hamilton has won the 2019 French Grand Prix F1 by defeating Valtteri Bottas. Both drive for Mercedes.
  • Charles Leclerc was at the third position in the Grand Prix. Hamilton now has six wins from eight meetings this season

  • The International Olympic Day is held on June 23 each year.
  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved to observe Olympic Day in January 1948 to commemorate the creation of the IOC on 23 June 1894.

    • In 2019, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is celebrating its 125th anniversary and to mark the occasion, IOC President Thomas Bach has formally opened its new headquarters ‘Olympic House’ worth 145 million Swiss francs ($145 million) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

  • The United Nations Public Service Day is celebrated every year on June 23 to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community.
  • United Nations General Assembly designated it in 2003 and gives away prestigious UN Public Service Awards.

International Widows Day: June 23

  • International Widows Day is a United Nations ratified day which takes place on June 23 every year to address the “poverty and injustice faced by millions of widows and their dependents in many countries”.
