India Ranks 19 out of 28 Nations in 2019 Index of Cancer Preparedness by EIU

  • India has been placed at 19th spot out of 28  countries in the Index of Cancer Preparedness (ICP) 2019 created by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). India got a score of 64.9.
  • Australia has topped the ICP list with a score of 90.6, followed by the Netherlands (89.9) and Germany (88.7).
  • Egypt (28), Romania (27) and Saudi Arabia (26) were placed at the bottom of the list.
  • The ICP allows benchmarking of national efforts and identify best practice in addressing the cancer challenge.
  • The Index of Cancer Preparedness (ICP) presents data on 45 indicators that are relevant to cancer control.

Central Govt Raises Authorised Capital of Allahabad Bank to Rs 8,000 cr

  • The central government after consultation with the Reserve Bank of India has increased the Authorised Capital of the state-owned Allahabad bank from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000.
  • The increase in authorised capital will enable the bank to raise further fund up to a maximum ceiling of Rs 8,000 crore.

Sebi reduces minimum subscription requirement for InvITs, REITs

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has reduced the minimum subscription requirement for Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs). SEBI has also defined trading lots for REITs and InvITs.

  • Minimum subscription requirement for REITs: Rs 50,000 (and its multiple) [earlier its was Rs 2 lakhs]
  • Minimum subscription requirement for InvITs: Rs 1 lakh  (and its multiple) [earlier its was Rs 10 lakhs]
  • For initial listing, a trading lot should be of 100 units, and its multiple. (for both REITs and InvITS)

BSE Inks Pact with Network Intelligence to provide security services to its members

  • BSE, India’s largest stock exchange has entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Network Intelligence, a global cybersecurity services provider & CERT-IN empanelled vendor on April 15, to provide cybersecurity services to its members under the cybersecurity framework set by SEBI.
  • SEBI had released its “Cybersecurity & Cyber Resilience framework for Stock Brokers / Depository Participants” in late 2018.
  • Network Intelligence will use BlueScope platform to offer 24×7 cyber security operations to the members from its state-of-the-art Next Gen Cybersecurity Operations Centre (CSOC) based in Mumbai.

London School of Economics Names Chair after Amartya Sen

  • The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has created a new academic position in honor of India-born philosopher and economist Amartya Sen, called as Amartya Sen Chair in Inequality Studies.
  • The holder of the position will also serve as Director of the LSE International Inequalities Institute, which facilitates interdisciplinary work on subjects related to inequality.
  • The Nobel laureate Sen won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1998. He served as a professor in the economics department at the LSE institute from 1971-82.

18 Indian Organisations Win Prestigious Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards 2019

  • The 2019 Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards were announced on April 22, 2019 with 18 organizations in India winning total 43 Stevie Awards including 10 Gold Stevies, 19 Silver, and 14 Bronze.
  • Gold Stevie winners in India are Cisco Systems India Private Ltd (2 gold), Datamatics Global Services Ltd, Dell Technologies Ltd, eClerx Services Ltd, Future Generali India Insurance Company Ltd, HP Inc., iMerit Technology Services, and Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (won 2 gold).
  • The winners of the sixth annual Asia-Pacific Stevie awards will be presented their awards in Singapore on 31 May, 2019.
  • The Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards are the only business awards program to recognize innovation in the workplace in all 29 nations of the Asia-Pacific region.

World Book and Copyright Day: April 23

  • The World Book and Copyright Day also known as International Day of the Book and World Book Day, is an annual event the organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on April 23 to promote reading, publishing, and copyright.
  • The first World Book Day was celebrated on 23 April 1995.
  • The theme of the 24th edition of the World Book Day is ‘celebrating literature and reading with a focus on the importance of enhancing and protecting indigenous languages’.

World Book Capital

  • As a part of the Day, UNESCO selects the World Book Capital every year. The World Book Capital for 2019 is Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. It will be preceded by Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in the year 2020

International Year of the Indigenous Languages

  • The UNESCO is observing the year 2019 as the International Year of the Indigenous Languages.
