India Successfully Launches Chandrayaan-2 from Sriharikota

  • India successfully launched its second lunar mission “Chandrayaan-2” on July 22, 2019 onboard its Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, GSLV-MkIII-M1, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Originally the launch of Chandrayaan-2 Misison was scheduled on 15th July, but was called off following a technical glitch in the rocket.

Basic Information about Chandrayaan-2  Mission

  • The total cost of the 3,850-kg Chandrayaan-2 mission is Rs 978 crore.
  • It will be the first Indian spacecraft to make a soft-landing close to the South Pole of the moon, which is not explored yet and sampled by any past mission. It is expected to take place on September 7, 2019.
  • This mission will offer new knowledge about the Moon.
  • Once Chandrayaan-2 reaches to south pole region of lunar terrain, India will become the fourth ever nation to have a soft-landing on the moon.
  • Other three nations are United States, China and Russia.

MNRE issues norms to implement issues guidelines for PM-KUSUM Scheme

  • Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued guidelines for the roll-out of PM-KUSUM (Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan) Scheme. The outlay of the scheme is Rs 34,422-crore.
  • Purpose: the scheme aims to add a solar capacity of 25,750 MW by 2022.
  • The scheme has 3 components, A, B and C, out of which Component B and C aims tis for farmers support and would encourage farmers to generate solar power in their farms and use the clean energy to replace their diesel water pumps.
  • As of now a pilot run of the scheme will be done based on the new guidelines and then the full scheme will be launched.

Students at IIT Madras Develops ‘Smart Agricopter’ to Eliminate Manual Spraying of Pesticides

  • A team of three students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have developed a drone name as “Smart Agricopter” to eliminate manual spraying of pesticides in agricultural fields as well as identify crop health by using a imaging camera.
  • The Project ‘Smart Agricopter’ is a hexacopter drone which has the capacity to carry 15 liters of pesticide and will allow spraying pesticides ten times faster and with 100 percent precision at the same cost as manual spraying.
  • The cost of the agricopter is estimated to be around Rs 5.1 lakh.

Manny Pacquiao beats Keith Thurman to Lift WBA Super Welterweight Title

  • Filipino professional boxer, Manny Pacquiao, claimed the WBA Welterweight Super Championship title after securing a split decision victory over Keith Thurman of America in Las Vegas.
  • The 40-year-old pacquiao has now become the oldest welterweight champion in history to lift the title.

Harmeet, Ayhika wins Single’s event at C’wealth TT; India clean sweeps all 7 Gold Medal

  • Harmeet Desai and Ayhika Mukherjee won the men’s and women’s singles titles respectively at the 21st Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships. The event has now concluded on July 22, 2019.
  • India has won all the 7 Gold Medals of the vent and made a clean sweep. The medal tally is:

India: 7 gold, 5 silver, 3 bronze; England: 2 silver, 3 bronze; Singapore: 6 bronze; Malaysia: 1 bronze; Nigeria: 1 bronze.

Ireland’s Shane Lowry Wins British Open (Golf)

  • Shane Lowry of Ireland won the British Open (Golf) 2019 by six strokes at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland to clinch his first major title.
  • The 32-year-old is the only second player from Ireland after Padraig Harrington (2007 and 2008) to lift the Claret Jug, or win any of golf’s four majors.

Former Australian Tennis Star Peter McNamara Passes Away

  • Former Australian Davis Cup tennis star and Wimbledon doubles champion Peter McNamara passed away suffering from cancer. He was 64
  • McNamara won five singles titles and nineteen doubles titles in his career. 

Yukiya Amano, Chief of U.N. Nuclear Watchdog IAEA Passes Away At 72

  • Yukiya Amano, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), passed away.
  • The 72-year-old former Japanese diplomat had held the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, IAEA director general position since 2009.
