8th Indo–Myanmar Coordinated Patrol Begins at Port Blair

  • The 8th edition of the Indo-Myanmar Coordinated Patrol (IMCOR) is being held at Port Blair in Andaman & Nicobar Command from May 20-28, 2019.
  • Myanmar ships UMS King TabinShweHtee (773)  and UMS Inlay (OPV-54) are participating in the coordinated patrol (CORPAT) along with Indian Naval Ship Saryu.

‘Not All Animals Migrate by Choice’ Campaign Launched to Raise Awareness on Illegal Wildlife Trade

  • The UN Environment India and Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) of India have jointly launched an awareness campaign named ‘Not all animals migrate by choice’ to create awareness and public support for the protection and conservation of wildlife, prevention of trafficking, smuggling and reduction in demand for wildlife products.
  • The campaign will be displayed at major airports across the country in collaboration with Airports Authority of India and GMR Group.
  • The event was inaugurated by actor, producer, UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador and recently appointed Secretary-General’s SDG Advocate, Dia Mirza.
  • In the first phase of the campaign, Tiger, Pangolin, Star Tortoise and Tokay Gecko will be displayed as they are highly endangered due to illegal trading in International markets.

Kapil Sharma Honored By London World Book Of Records as Most Viewed Stand-up Comedian

  • Indian stand-up comedian-actor Kapil Sharma has been acknowledged as one of the most viewed stand-up comedian in India and abroad and for promoting animal rights by the World book of Records London.
  • The king of comedy, Kapil Sharma started his career as a stand-up comedian, and eventually rose to fame with his separate show “Comedy Nights With Kapil”.

Shyam Saran to be Conferred Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun

  • Former Indian foreign secretary Shyam Saran has been chosen to be conferred with Japan’s second highest national award in its 2019 Spring Imperial Decorations
  • 72-year-old Saran will be awarded ‘the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star’ for his contributions to strengthen the strategic ties and enhancing mutual understanding between India and Japan.
  • Saran was India’s Foreign Secretary during 2004-2006.

Reliance Industries Overtakes Indian Oil Corporation to Become Biggest Company by Revenue

  • The Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has displaced the public sector refiner Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) as the biggest company by revenue in India.
  • Based on Bloomberg data, the net revenue of RIL surged by 44.8% in FY19 to Rs 5.67 lakh crore compared to 28.03% of IOC to Rs 5.28 lakh crore.
  • With this milestone, RIL has achieved the numero uno position in terms of all three parameters — revenue, profit and market capitalisation.

OECD Cuts Global Growth Forecast to 3.2 Percent for FY20

The OECD has cut its forecast for the global economic growth to 3.2 percent for 2019-20 from 3.3 percent earlier on the backdrop of rising trade tensions between China-US.

Joko Widodo Elected President of Indonesia for Second Term

  • The President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo has been re-elected as President of the country for the second term.
  • The 57-year-old Joko (famously known as Jokowi) secured 55.5 percent of the vote in elections to beat his rival Prabowo Subianto (44.5 percent).

Australian PM Scott Morrison Wins 2019 Elections with Majority

  • Australian Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Party Scott Morrison has won the 2019 Australian election with majority.
  • According to the Australian Electoral Commission, Morrison’s Liberal-led conservative coalition won 76 seats in the 151-member lower house, the number needed to form a majority government.

Renowned Filmmaker & Film Historian Vijaya Mulay Passes Away at 98

  • Renowned filmmaker, film historian, researcher and educationist Vijaya Mulay passed away. She was 98.
  • She is most famously known for her 1974 film Ek Anek Aur Ekta, which was awarded the National Film Award for Best Educational Film. 

Three-time F1 World Champion Niki Lauda Passes Away

  • The former Austrian Formula One driver and a three-time F1 World Drivers’ Champion Niki Lauda passed away. He was 70.
  • Lauda was the only driver in F1 history to have been champion for both Ferrari and McLaren. He took the title for Ferrari in 1975 and 1977 and McLaren in 1984.

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development: May 21

  • The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is held on May 21 every year to help communities understand the value of cultural diversity and learn how to live together in harmony.
  • The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the day following UNESCO’s adoption of the  Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity in November 2001

National Anti-Terrorism Day: May 21

  • The National Anti-Terrorism Day is observed annually on May 21 in India to spread the message of global peace, non-violence and humanity to promote unity among the people and stop youngsters from being misguided.
  • The Anti-Terrorism Day marks the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who was assassinated in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, in May, 1991 while he was campaigning for the Congress as the party president for the national elections
