Piyush Goyal among seven Indians in ‘World’s 100 Most Influential People in Climate Policy for 2019’

  • Seven Indians have been named in the ‘World’s 100 Most Influential People in Climate Policy for 2019’ for taking steps in order to combat climate change. The list is prepared by Apolitical. These seven Indians are:
  • (1) Piyush Goyal – Union Minister for Railways and Coal – fast track electrification of nearly 18,000 unelectrified villages, and been critical in the rollout of a drastic power sector reform and the world’s largest LED bulb distribution programme.
  • (2) Dr Harsh Vardhan – Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change; (3) Mukta Tilak (Pune Mayor); (4) Jyoti Kirit Parikh (executive director of Integrated Research and Action for Development); (5) Sunita Narain, (environmentalist and political activist); (6) Vandana Shiva (environmental activist); and (7) Upendra Tripathy (director general of the International Solar Alliance)

India ranked 140 in the 2019 World Happiness Report; Top- Finland

  • Finland has topped that World Happiness Report 2019, released by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the United Nations. The report is released annually on 20 March i.e on International Day of Happiness.
  • India has been ranked at 140th place out of 156 nations. South Sudan was last in the list. Denmark is on second while Norway was on third in the list. Finland has topped a global happiness ranking for the second year in a row.

Singapore, Hong Kong & Paris Shares 1st Rank in Worldwide Cost of Living 2019 by EIU

  • Singapore, Hong Kong and Paris have shared the first position in the latest The Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) 2019 Worldwide Cost of Living Survey released recently.
  • It is for the first time in 30-year history of the Worldwide Cost of Living Survey that three cities share the unenviable title of the world’s most expensive city to live in.
  • However, Singapore has won the top rank for sixth straight year.
  • The world’s cheapest cities include Caracas (Venezuela), Damascus (Syria), Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Almaty (Kazakhstan), Karachi (Pakistan), Lagos (Nigeria), Buenos Aires (Argentina) as well as the three Indian cities of Bengaluru (122), Chennai(125) and Delhi (123).

Indian Navy Provides Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Support to Cyclone ‘IDAI’ hit Mozambique

  • Three Indian Naval Ships namely INS Sujatha, INS Shardul & INS Sarathi have reached the port city of Beira in Mozambique to provide immediate Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) to Central and Northern part of Mozambique affected by tropical cyclone ‘IDAI’ of Category 4, causing loss of lives and severe damage to properties.
  • Indian Navy is providing relief material in the form of food, clothes and medicine to the affected people accompanied by 3 medical practitioners and 5 nurses to provide immediate medical help

Flipkart introduces India’s first robot-based sortation technology in Bengaluru

  • Flipkart has introduced country’s first robot-based sortation technology, Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) at its Soukya sortation center in Bengaluru.
  • The setup includes 100+ self-guided bots that automatically sort packages to the right customer pin codes by identifying encoded information on each package.
  • It can also process up to 4,500 shipments per hour. This can be scaled upto 5 times with minimal changes.

Aamir Khan appointed as Brand Ambassador of PhonePe

  • PhonePe, a UPI based payment app company has appointed Bollywood actor Aamir Khan as itsBrand Ambassador.
  • PhonePe is one of India’s fastest growing payment platform and is based on UPI.  It is headquartered in Bengaluru.

World Sparrow Day: March 20

  • The World Sparrow Day is observed every year March 20 to raise awareness about the house sparrow and threat to their population.
  • The theme for WORLD SPARROW DAY 2019 is I LOVE Sparrows.

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination: March 21

  • The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March to remind people about the negative consequences of racial discrimination.
  • The United Nations General Assembly called for the day in 1966 to encourage people to remember their obligation and determination to combat racial discrimination.
  • 2019 Theme: Mitigating and countering rising nationalist populism and extreme supremacist ideologies

World Poetry Day Observed on March 21

  • World Poetry Day (WPD) is celebrated annually on 21 March to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world.
  • The day was declared by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999 to “give fresh recognition and impetus to national, regional and international poetry movements”.

International Day of Forests 2019: March 21

  • The International Day of Forests also known as World Forestry Day, is observed on March 21 every year, to increase the public awareness among communities about the values, significance and contributions of the forests to balance the life cycle on the earth.
  • The day was established by resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on November 28, 2012.
  • The theme of 2019 – “Forests and Education”.

World Down Syndrome Day: March 21

  • World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), (Schrage Day), is celebrated on March 21 to raise public awareness for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down syndrome.
  • The global theme for 2019 is “Leave no one behind”
