Standing Group Of Secretaries Constituted on Resolving E-commerce Issues

  • The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has constituted a Standing Group of Secretaries (GoS) under the Chairmanship of Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ramesh Abhishek.
  • The group will look to ensure inter-ministerial/inter-departmental coordination on resolving issues, cutting across Ministries and Departments of Government of India, related to e-Commerce.

Indian Navy Undertakes ‘Operation Sankalp’ to Safeguard Indian Vessels In Gulf of Oman

  • Indian Navy has launched ‘Operation Sankalp’ on June 20, 2019, in the Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf to ensure Maritime Security for Indian Flagged Vessels operating/ transiting through the Gulf regions.
  • INS Chennai & INS Sunayna have been deployed by the Indian Navy for the security operation. In addition to this aerial surveillance by Indian Navy aircraft is also being undertaken in the area.
  • The move was taken in response to attack on two oil tankers in the region.

Telangana CM Dedicates Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project to Nation

  • Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao dedicated the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) to the nation on June 21, 2019.
  • Built across the Godavari River, Rs 80,500 crore KLIP is touted to be world’s largest multi-stage, multi-purpose lift irrigation project.
  • It is designed to irrigate 45 lakh acres for two crops in a year, meet the drinking water requirement of 70 percent of the state as well as cater to the needs of the industry.

Kolhapuri Footwear Receives GI Tag

  • The popular ethnic footwear brand Kolhapuri chappal has been given the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • The GI tag for making these footwears has been jointly granted to Maharashtra and Karnataka each which will now be able to make and market their product in domestic and international markets.
  • 4 districts in each of the two states has received the GI tag approvals for Kolhapuris.
  • The districts are Kolhapur, Solapur, Sangli and Satara in Maharashtra and Dharwad, Belgaum, Bagalkot and Bijapur Bijapur districts of Karnataka.

HDFC to buy 51.2% in Apollo Munich Health for Rs. 1,347 crore

  • The Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) has announced that it will soon acquire 51.2 percent stake in Apollo Munich Health Insurance from the Apollo Hospitals Group at about Rs. 1,347 crore.
  • It will be a two-stage transaction where in the first stage, Apollo Munich would be held as a subsidiary of HDFC and later in the second stage, it would be merged with HDFC Ergo General Insurance to form one entity under the HDFC Ergo brand.
  • HDFC will pay Rs. 73.2 per share to Apollo Hospitals for the acquisition.

Veteran Author Amish Tripathi named as Director of Nehru Centre in London

  • Well-known Indian author Amish Tripathi has been named as the Director of the Nehru Centre in London for a period of four years.
  • The centre works under the aegis of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
  • Tripathi would take over from diplomat Srinivas Gotru.
  • Nehru Centre was founded in 1992 to promote cultural exchange between India and the United Kingdom.

IOC Lifts Ban Imposed on India to Host Olympic-Related Sporting Events

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has on June 20, 2019 officially lifted the provisional sanction imposed on India in February 2019 to host international sporting events.
  • Indian government gave a written guarantee to the Indian Olympic Association on June 18, that all eligible athletes will be allowed to participate in events held in the country following which the restrictions were lifted
  • In February 2019, IOC imposed hosting right ban on India after Pakistani shooters were not issued visas for the World Cup held in Delhi.

Annu Rani Cliches Gold at 58th Ostrava Golden Spike Athletics Meet

  • Asian silver medallist, Annu Rani has won the women’s javelin bronze in the 58th Ostrava Golden Spike athletics meet, an IAAF World Challenge event.
  • The 26-year-old won the medal with her own best throw of 60.20m.
  • Gold was won by Croatia’s Sara Kolak, and Slovenia’s Martina Ratej bagged the silver.

India’s Pranati Nayak Wins Bronze at Asian Artistic Gymnastic Championship

  • In Gymnastics, Pranati Nayak of West Bengal clinched a bronze medal in vault event at the 2019 Senior Asian Artistic Championships in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
  • The 23-year-old scored 13.384 to claim the bronze medal.
  • China’s Yu Linmin won gold while and Japan’s Ayaka Sakaguchi won silver medal at the event.

International Day of Yoga: June 21

  • International Day of Yoga is celebrated annually on 21 June since 2015.
  • The international day for yoga was suggested by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was declared unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2014.
  • The theme of 2019 is “Yoga for Heart”.

World Hydrography Day : June 21

  • World Hydrography Day is held annually on 21 June by the International Hydrographic Organization to publicise the work of hydrographers and the importance of hydrography.
  • 2019 theme: “Hydrographic information driving marine knowledge”

World Music Day: June 21

  • World Music Day  takes place on 21 June every year to honor the amateur and professional musicians. The first ever music day took place in 1982 in Paris.
