HRD Minister Launches UGC Scheme of ‘Paramarsh’ to Promote Quality Assurance in Higher Education

  • The Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal “Nishank” launched the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) scheme named ‘Paramarsh’ on July 18, 2019 in New Delhi.
  • The Paramarsh scheme has been launched for mentoring National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) Accreditation Aspirant Institutions to promote Quality Assurance in Higher Education.
  • The scheme will target 1000 Higher Education Institutions for mentoring with a specific focus on quality as enumerated in the UGC “Quality Mandate”. 
  • Initially 71 universities and 391 colleges having NAAC score of 3.26 and above will mentor five colleges each.

Centre Approves Rs 206.8 crore for FY20 Towards Implementation of Agriculture Export Policy Scheme

  • The Central Government has approved an outlay of Rs 206.8 crore for a central sector scheme titled ‘Implementation of Agriculture Export Policy’ for the financial year 2019-20.
  • The ‘Agriculture Export Policy, 2018’ is aimed at doubling farmers’ income by 2022. 
  • The government seeks to double farm exports to $60 billion by 2022 from $30 billion in 2018.
  • The Policy will invest Rs 1,400 crore to set up specialised clusters in different states for different produce to push exports. 

11th DefExpo to be held in Lucknow in 2020

  • The Defence Ministry has announced that the 11th edition of the biennial DefExpo will be held in Lucknow (UP) in 2020.
  • In 2018, the event was held in Chennai. This time it is scheduled from February 5th to 8th, 2020.
  • The DefExpo would provide a unique platform for Defence industry OEMs, exhibitors and private industry to display their latest innovations and capabilities.

Rajnath Singh Inaugurates Two Bridges- Ujh and Basantar- in J&K Under Project Sampark

  • The Union Minister of Defence Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated two strategically important bridges in Kathua and Samba districts of Jammu & Kashmir under the Project Sampark for smooth mobility of security forces in the border areas.
  • The 1000 meter long Ujh Bridge was inaugurated in Kathua district and 617.40-meter Basantar Bridge in samba district.
  • Project Sampark was launched on January 1, 1965 to develop and maintain the operational road infrastructure of Armed Forces in Border Areas of the State of Jammu and Kashmir.

Vivek Kohli elected chairman of Commonwealth TT Federation

  • India’s Vivek Kohli has been elected as the Chairman of Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation (CTTF). He defeated incumbent Alan Ransome of England by securing 16 votes more than him. (22 and 6 votes).
  • M P Singh has been again elected as the secretary-general of Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation (CTTF). 

Indian Bodybuilder Ravinder Malik Wins Mr South Asia title

  • Indian bodybuilder Ravinder Kumar Malik has been adjudged as Mr. South Asia at 12th South Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship 2019 held in Kathmandu.
  • Malik, who won men’s 80kg division, was named the best bodybuilder among the winners of various nine senior men’s weight categories. 
  • The Championship was participated by all six South Asian countries.
  • However, Afghanistan won the overall championship with 535 points including 6 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze.
  • Host Nepal finished second with 445 points (3-7-6), and India remained third with 380 points (4-5-1). 

Akane Yamaguchi defeats PV Sindhu to win the Indonesia Open 2019 (Badminton)

  • Akane Yamaguchi of Japan defeated P.V.Sindhu 21-15, 21-16 to win the Indonesia Open 2019 (Badminton) Women’s single title.
  • The event was held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Hima Das, Muhammad Anas Wins Gold In 400m Race

  • Hima Das has won her fifth gold medal in the month as she won the 400m race in Nové Mesto nad Váhom Grand Prix held at Prague, Czech Republic. She took 52.09 seconds to complete the 400-meter race.
  • In men’s 400 m race, Indian sprinter Muhammad Anas has won the Gold Medal. 

LJP MP Ram Chandra Paswan Passes Away

  • Ram Chandra Paswan, a member of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) political party passed away suffering cardiac arrest. He was 57.
  • He was the younger brother of Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan and represented the Samastipur constituency of Bihar.

Former BJP Delhi President Mange Ram Garg passes away at 82

  • BJP Leader Mange Ram Garg has passed away at the age of 82 years. He was a former BJP Delhi President, MLA and senior Sangh Associate.
  • He was suffering from age-related issues.

Social activist, educationist Nirmala Purandare passes away

  • Noted social activist and educationist, Nirmala Purandare passed away at the age of 86 years.
  • She is the wife of noted historian Babasaheb Purandare. She was associated with the Vanasthali Rural Development Centre (VRDC), founded in 1981 and working to educate children and women in rural areas.
  • She was also instrumental in setting up over 250 ‘balwadis’ (pre-school) in Maharashtra.
