India’s Haj Quota Raised to 2 lakh from One lakh Seventy Five Thousand

  • The Saudi Arabian government has issued a formal order on April 19, 2019 to increase India’s Haj quota by about 25,000, to raise the number of pilgrims from India who can perform Haj to 2 lakh from the current 1.75 lakh.
  • This increase in the quota will enable all the applicants from Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Goa, Manipur, Lakshadweep, Odisha, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Daman and Diu, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Punjab, Tripura, to perform Haj without subsidy this year.
  • Besides, another remarkable thing about this Haj is that 2,340 Muslim women from India will also go for the pilgrimage without ”Mehram” or male companion.

Services beat Punjab in Final to lift Santosh Trophy

  • Services beat hosts Punjab in the grand finale, 1-0, to lift 2018-19 Santosh Trophy held in Ludhiana on April 21, 2019.
  • This was the 73rd edition of the game. It is the sixth time Services has won the Santosh Trophy.

Noted Lady Mountaineer Rama Sengupta Paul Passes Away

The veteran lady mountaineer of the country Rama Sengupta Paul, who led the first successful all women expedition to Krdarnath Dome in Garhwal Himalaya, has passed away following a cardiac arrest. She was 66.


Veteran Bengali Folk Singer Amar Pal Passes Away

  • Noted Bengali folk singer Amar Pal, one of the legendary figures to popularise Bengali folk songs, passed away after a prolonged illness. He was 98.
  • Pal was born on 19 May 1922 in undivided Bengal at Brahmanbaria, which is now in Bangladesh.

Former Chief Secretary of Gujarat HK Khan Passes Away

  • The veteran IAS officer and former Chief Secretary of Gujarat, HK K Khan, passed away in New Delhi.
  • Mr. Khan served as an IAS officer of 1956 cadre of Gujarat for nearly three decades and was the Chief Secretary of Gujarat from 1990 to 1992.

American Paranormal Investigator Lorraine Warren Passes Away at 92

  • Paranormal investigator and demonologist, Lorraine Warren, associated with prominent cases of hauntings passed away. She was 92.
  • Lorraine and her husband Edward Warren, who passed away in 2006, have been considered America’s preeminent experts on the subject of spirits and demonology for over 50 years.
  • The horror films like ‘The Conjuring’ and the ‘The Amityville Horror’ were inspired from their profession.

National Civil Service Day: April 21

  • India observes the Civil Service Day on 21 April every year to commemorate the day when first Home Minister of Independent India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, addressed the probationers of Administrative Services Officers in 1947.
  • The purpose for this day is to rededicate and recommit themselves to the cause of the people and renew their commitments to public service and excellence in work.

World Creativity and Innovation Day: April 21

  • The World Creativity and Innovation Day (WCID) is celebrated on April 21 every year to raise awareness of the role of creativity and innovation in “problem-solving and in implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals
  • The Day is a part of the United Nations resolution entitled “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”
