North East Sustainable Development Goals Conclave 2020 to be held in Assam

  • The North East Sustainable Development Goals Conclave 2020 will be held in Assam from February 24-26, 2020.
  • The theme of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Conclave 2020 is Partnerships, Cooperation and Development of North Eastern States.
  • The three-day event is being organised by the government think-tank Niti Aayog in association with the North Eastern Council, Government of Assam, Tata Trusts, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS).

Centre Plans to set up Central Consumer Protection Authority in April 2020 Beginning

  • The Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Shri Ram Vilas Paswan has informed that the government will set up Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) by the first week of April 2020.
  • The CCPA to be set up under Consumer Protection Act 2019.
  • An investigative wing will be formed under the aegis of the authority.
  • Role and Responsibilities of the CCPA – Carry out inquiries and address issues in matters related to consumer rights, unfair trade practices, misleading advertisements and impose penalties for selling spurious and adulterated products.
  • The rules related to Consumer Protection Act will be finalized within one and half months

Govt to Launch Tilhan Mission to Boost Oilseed Production

  • The Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Minister of Rural Development, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar has announced that the government will launch Tilhan Mission to make the country self-reliant in oilseed production.
  • Agriculture is the important pillar of the India’s economy and contributes 14 percent to the GDP.
  • Apart from this, the government has also decided to create 10 thousand Farmers Producer Organisation (FPO) across the country. For this, assistance of over Rs 6,000 crore will be provided.
  • Besides, Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana will not be mandatory for farmers and it will be voluntary for them.

Prakash Javadekar Releases Reference Annuals Books India 2020 and Bharat 2020

  • The Union Minister of Information and  Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar released the Reference Annual Books ‘India 2020’ and ‘Bharat 2020’ in New Delhi on 19 February 2020 along with the e-version of the year books.
  • A Reference Annual is a comprehensive information about the country’s activities, progress and achievements of various Central Government Ministries, Departments and Organisations during the year in different fields.
  • The book deal with all aspects of development, ranging from rural to urban, industry to infrastructure, science and technology, art and culture, economy, health, defence, education and mass communication.
  • The Publications Division of the Information and Broadcasting ministry compiles the Reference Annual every year.

Cabinet Approves Setting up panel for policy advice to Government on latest technologies

  • The Cabinet has approved to constitute 12-member empowered “Technology Group” to provide timely policy advice to the government.
  • The panel will be headed by Principal Scientific Adviser to the government K Vijay Raghvan.
  • The three pillars of the work of the “Technology Group” will include support on policy, procurement and R&D proposals.
  • Role & responsibility of the panel will be to
    • make suggestions on latest technologies and products.
    • look into commercialisation of dual use technologies developed in national laboratories and government research and development organisations
    • develop a road map for selected key technologies
    • ensure that India has appropriate policies and strategies for effective, secure and context-sensitive exploitation of latest technologies for economic growth and sustainable development of the country”s industries in all sectors.

India Ranks 77th on Sustainability Index and 131st in Child Flourishing Index rankings: UN report

  • India has been ranked at 77th position in the Sustainability Index 2020 and 131st on the Flourishing Index 2020, according to a UN-backed report.
  • The report released on 19 February 2020 commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and The Lancet medical journal.
  • The Sustainability Index 2020 takes into account per capita carbon emissions and ability of children in a nation to live healthy lives. It ranks countries on excess carbon emissions compared with the 2030 target.
  • The Flourishing Index 2020 measures the best chance at survival and well-being for children.
  • Flourishing is the geometric mean of Surviving and Thriving. For Surviving, the authors selected maternal survival, survival in children younger than 5 years old, suicide, access to maternal and child health services, basic hygiene and sanitation, and lack of extreme poverty.
  • For Thriving, the domains were educational achievement, growth and nutrition, reproductive freedom, and protection from violence.

France to Shut Down its Oldest Nuclear Complex Fessenheim Power Plant by June 2020

  • The 2X920 MW Fessenheim Nuclear Power Plant is the oldest operational nuclear power plant in France.
  • French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has announced that the entire complex will come to a halt on June 30, 2020.
  • The Unit 1 of the plant will close on 22nd February 2020 while the Unit 2 on 30th June 2020.
  • The plan to shut down the plant has been taken to balance nuclear produced energy and electricity with increased generation from renewable sources.
  • The government has planned to close the coal-based plants by 2022 to reduce greenhouse gases.
  • Currently, France receives more than 70% of its electricity from nuclear power; the new plan would cap the amount of electricity from nuclear power at 50% by 2035.

Indian Wrestlers Bags Five medals in Greco-Roman events of 2020 Asian Wrestling Championships

  • Indian wrestlers have won five medals that includes one gold and four bronze from the Greco Roman category of the Asian Wrestling Championships 2020 which was held at the KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium, Indira Gandhi Arena, New Delhi on 18 and 19 February 2020.
  • The lone gold came from Indian Wrestling Champion Sushil Kumar in 87 kg category by defeating Azat Salidinov from Kyrgyzstan.
  • The bronze medal came from
    • Arjun Halakurki -55kg
    • Ashu -67kg
    • Aditya Kundu -72kg
    • Hardeep Singh -97kg

India will host AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2022

  • India has been selected to host the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
  • This was announced by the Women’s Committee of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC)  in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 19 February 2020.
  • India is the first South Asian country to host the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Asian Cup.
  • Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan were the other competing candidates.

World Day of Social Justice: 20 February

  • The United Nations’ (UN) World Day of Social Justice is observed on February 20 every year since 2009.
  • Aim: Recognize the need to promote and tackle issues of social justice such as poverty, exclusion, gender equality, unemployment, human rights, and social protections and focus on the goal of achieving full employment and support for social integration.
  • 2020 Theme: “Closing the Inequalities Gap to Achieve Social Justice”
