ICG Co-hosts 12th ReCAAP ISC Capacity Building Workshop In New Delhi

  • The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) along with the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre (ISC), is co-hosting the 12th Capacity Building workshop in New Delhi from June 19-20, 2019.
  • The ReCAAP is the first regional Government-to-Government agreement to deal with piracy and armed robbery at sea in Asia. Its headquarter is in Singapore.
  • Presently 20 countries are members of ReCAAP, which was founded in 2006.
  • Union Government of India has designated ICG as the focal point within India for ReCAAP

India Projected to Overtake China as World’s Most Populous Country by 2027: UN Report

  • India is expected to surpass China to become the world’s most populous country in the next eight years, by or around 2027 as per the UN report ‘The World Population Prospects 2019.
  • The report says that India is expected to add nearly 273 million people between 2019 and 2050.
  • Population of Nigeria is projected to grow by 200 million and is second only to India. Together, these two countries could account for 23 percent of the global population increase to 2050.
  • The world’s population is expected to increase by two billion people in the next 30 years, from 7.7 billion currently to 9.7 billion in 2050.

IIT-Bombay Best Indian Institution; MIT Tops in QS World University Ranking 2020

  • The World-class Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has topped the latest QS World University Rankings for the eighth consecutive year. No other university has achieved top position for such a long run till now.
  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-Bombay), has emerged as the best institution of India in the 2020 QS World University Ranking. It is ranked 152 globally. No institute of India is in top 100.
  • 23 institutes of India have been featured in the 16th edition of the QS World University Ranking.
  • Only IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi (182) and Indian Institute of Science (184) are ranked in the global top 200.

Om Birla Elected Speaker of 17th Lok Sabha

  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Om Birla has been unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha on June 19, 2019.
  • The 56-year-old Om Birla is a two-time MP from Rajasthan’s Kota. His name was proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Centre Approves Rs 120 crore State Cancer Institute at GMC Jammu

  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, has approved 100 bedded State Cancer Institute at Government Medical College in Jammu worth Rs 120 crore to strengthen the tertiary level cancer services in the state. 

Rajasthan Government Announces Allowance up to Rs 3,500 for Unemployed Graduates

  • The state government of Rajasthan has announced that the unemployed youth having graduation or equivalent degree will be given unemployment allowance up to Rs 3,500 per month under the Chief Minister Yuva Sambal Yojana.
  • The Chief Minister Yuva Sambal Yojana was launched in February 2019 after rechristening the earlier Akshat Yojana. 
  • Basic Features
    • To be eligible for the scheme the applicants should be natives of Rajasthan.
    • Male applicants will get Rs 3,000 per month
    • Women and differently-abled will get Rs 3,500 per month
    • The amount will be given for two years or until they get employed. 

Sri Lanka’s First Satellite ‘Ravana-1’ Launched Into Orbit

  • Sri Lanka’s first satellite ‘Ravana-1’, was successfully launched into orbit on June 17 from the International Space Station (ISS) along with two other BIRDS 3 satellites from Japan and Nepal.
  • Raavana-1 will orbit 400-km away from the earth.
  • The satellite was officially handed over to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency on February 18 and was sent to the ISS on April 17.

HCL Tech Signs Multi-Year Deal with Cricket Australia

  • IT major, HCL Technologies has entered into multi-year contract with Cricket Australia (CA), the governing body of Australian cricket to provide digital experience to cricket fans, players, partners, employees, and volunteers across the country and around the world.
  • HCL Tech will be the digital technology partner of CA.
  • With HCL’s digital offerings CA will be able to better connect with and inspire communities through cricket

Former Mizoram Minister Lalrinchhana Passes Away

  • Former Mizoram minister and leader of Mizo National Front (MNF), Lalrinchhana, passed away suffering from cancer. He was 84.

International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict: 19 June

  • Each year June 19 is observed as the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict.
  • The day was proclaimed by United Nations General Assembly on 19 June 2015.
  • It aims to raise awareness of the need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence, honour the victims and survivors of sexual violence around the world and pay tribute to all those who have courageously devoted their lives to and lost their lives in standing up for the eradication of these crimes.
