Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala to be the 3rd International Airport of NE

  • The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has announced that the Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport located in Agartala is set to become an International Airport by the end of 2019 or start of 2020.
  • With this Agartala Airport would be the third International Airport in North East after Guwahati (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport) and Imphal (Bir Tikendrajit International Airport ). 

World Food India to be held in New Delhi in November 2019

  • World Food India 2019, the biggest gathering of all global and domestic stakeholders in Food Processing Sector will be held from 1st to 4th November 2019 in New Delhi.
  • It is being organized by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries. The tagline of the event will be “Forging Partnerships for Growth”.
  • For the year 2019, the Ministry is targeting to partner with at least 15 countries and participation from at least 80 countries.

India to Host COP-14 of UNCCD in September 2019

  • India will host the 14th session of the Conference of Parties (COP-14) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in September 2019 at New Delhi to address the issue of land degradation and desertification.
  • For the first time, the event will be held in India and see participation from at least 5,000 delegates from nearly 197 countries.
  • The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) was established in 1994. It is the only legally binding international agreement linking environment and development issues to the land agenda.

Facebook to launch its digital currency ‘Libra’ in 2020

  • Social Media giant, Facebook has announced that it will launch its digital currency named ‘Libra’ in 2020.
  • The digital wallet subsidiary of Facebook called ‘Calibra’ will launch the blockchain-powered cryptocurrency ‘Libra’.
  • Libra would be in Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and as a stand-alone app in 2020 and will help people globally who don’t have a bank account but do have a mobile phone.
  • Facebook has tied up with 27 organizations around the world to start the non-profit Libra Association to create the new currency.

Gary Woodland Wins 2019 US Open Golf Tournament

  • American professional golfer, Gary Woodland won the 2019 United States Open Championship (Golf), beating world number one, Brooks Koepka by three strokes.
  • This is the first major career title of the 35 year old Woodland.
  • The 2019 US Open was the 119th U.S. Open played from June 13–16 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California.

Dronacharya Awardee Veteran Athletics Coach N Lingappa Passes Away

  • Veteran athletics coach N. Lingappa passed away. He was 95. 
  • Lingappa was awarded the prestigious Dronacharya Award in 2014 in recognition of his work as a coach.
  • He is known for providing training to international sportspersons such as Ashwini Nachappa, Vandana Rao, D. Y. Biradhar, Udaya Prabhu and P. C. Ponnappa among others.

Former President of Egypt, Mohamed Morsi Passes Away

  • Egypt’s former President Mohamed Morsi passed away in Cairo on June 17 while attending a session in his trial on espionage charges in the court. He collapsed in a defendants’ cage in the courtroom.
  • The 67-year-old served as the President from 30 June 2012 to 3 July 2013
