India Ranks 140 in World Press Freedom Index 2019

  • India has slipped 2 positions to be placed at 140 out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index 2019, released annually by Reporters Without Borders (RWB), a non-profit organisation based in Paris.
  • The index has been topped by Norway for the third year running while Finland and  Netherlands are second and third respectively.
  • The bottom of the list has been occupied by Turkmenistan(180) and North Korea (179).

Nepal & Sri Lanka Successfully Launches Their First Satellite into Space

  • The first ever satellite of Sri Lanka and Nepal was successfully launched into space from NASA’s Flight Facility on Virginia’s East Shore in United States on April 18, 2019.
  • Nepal’s satellite ‘NepaliSat-1’ and Sri Lanka’s satellite ‘Raavana-1’ along with Japan Satellite Uguisu were launched onboard Antares rocket.
  • It is the part of the BIRDS-3 satellites project of the Japanese Kyushu Institute of Technology which has been designed in association with the United Nations to help countries launch their first satellite.
  • NepaliSat-1 is a low orbit satellite developed by the Nepalese scientists to take photographs on a regular basis to gather geographical information of the country.
  • Raavana-1 has been developed by  Sri Lankan research engineers to capture images of Sri Lanka and its neighbouring countries.
  • With this, Sri Lanka and Nepal have also entered into the global space for having its own satellite.

Saudi Arabia to host G20 summit 2020

  • Saudi Arabia announced that it will host the G20 summit in the year 2020. The summit will take place in November 2020 in Riyadh. This would be the first G0 summit in Saudi Arabia. This will be the 15th edition.
  • The G20 summit in 2019 will take place in Osaka, Japan.

ETMONEY becomes India’s first comprehensive financial services app to integrate UPI

  • ETMONEY has announced that it has integrated Unified Payment Interface (UPI) as a payment method on its platform. The integration of UPI will simplify the mutual fund payment experience for millions of ETMONEY users.
  • With this, it has become the first full-fledged financial service app to integrate UPI for payment. ETMONEY is owned by the Times Group.

Deutsche Bank appoints Kaushik Shaparia as CEO of India Business

  • Deutsche Bank has appointed Kaushik Shaparia as the chief executive officer for India. Kaushik Shaparia’s appointment will be effective from May 2019.
  • He will succeed Ravneet Gill who joined Yes Bank as CEO in March 2019.
  • Deutsche started its India operations in 1980. Deutsche Bank HQ- Frankfurt, Germany; Deutsche Bank HQ in India- Mumbai.

UAE gifts 18 big cats to zoo in Pak

  •  The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has gifted 18 big cats to Pakistan on April 17, 2019 which includes four white tigers, six Bengal tigers and eight African lions.
  • These big cats will be shifted to the Lahore Safari Zoo on April 22, 2019.
  • The Lahore Safari Zoo has 30 different types of tigers and lions

World Heritage Day: April 18

  • The International Day for Monuments and Sites also known as World Heritage Day is observed internationally on 18 April.
  • The Day aims to raise awareness about the diversity of cultural heritage of humanity, their vulnerability and the efforts required for their protection and conservation.
  • The theme for 2019 International Day for Monuments and Sites is Rural Landscapes.

Former President of West Indies Cricket Board Pat Rousseau Passes Away at 85

Patrick Rousseau, the former president of the West Indies Cricket Board, passed away in Jamaica following long illness. He was 85.
