FSSAI Launches Food Safety Mitra Scheme

  • Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced a new scheme ‘Food Safety Mitra (FSM)’ to engage motivated individuals with the food safety ecosystem at ground level.
  • The scheme was launched by Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan on the occasion of World Food Day on October 16, 2019.
  • Food Safety Mitra: FSM is an individual professional certified by FSSAI who assists in compliances related to FSS Act, Rules & Regulations.
    • They will be available in three avatars- Digital Mitra, Trainer Mitra and Hygiene Mitra depending upon their respective roles and responsibilities.
    • The scheme will open opportunities for youths in the area of online licensing and registration of food businesses, food safety training and hygiene auditing.
    • Youths can register for Digital Mitra through online portal provided by FSSAI – https://fssai.gov.in/mitra/
  • The Minister also launched Eat Right Jacket and Eat Right Jhola.
  • Eat Right Jhola: It is a reusable, washable and bio-degradable bag.
  • Eat Right Smart Jacket: The jacket will give an identity to FSSAI staff to ensure transparent inspection. It’s embedded with an RFID tag and QR code and linked to software to capture entry of inspection staff into premise for monitoring.

Mastercard, Dhoni launch campaign – “Team Cashless India” to promote digital payments in India

  • Mastercard has launched a campaign named “Team Cashless India” for promoting and giving a boost to digital payments in India.
  • Indian Cricketer M.S. Dhoni is the brand ambassador of Mastercard and this campaign.
  • Mastercard will work together with Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), acquirer banks and finance technology companies to support nominated merchants to deploy digital payments acceptance infrastructure.

India Ranks 102 among 117 Nations in Global Hunger Index 2019

  • India has been ranked at 102nd position in 2019 Global Hunger Index (GHI) among 117 countries, with a score of 30.3.
  • 17 countries have shared the top rank in the 2019 GHI with scores of less than 5. Since the differences between their scores are minimal, they are not assigned individual ranks.
  • Central African Republic is the lowest ranking country placed at 117 with a score of 53.6.
  • The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is published jointly by Germany based Welthungerhilfe and Irish NGO Concern Worldwide to calculate the levels of hunger and under-nutrition worldwide.
  • Countries are ranked based on a 100-point “severity scale”, where zero is the best score (no hunger) and 100 is the worst.
  • The index takes into account four indicators : undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting (weight for age) and child mortality.

India ranked 82 in World Giving Index; Top- USA

  • India has been ranked at 82 out of 128 countries in the World Giving Index by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).
  • The World Giving Index ranking has been topped by USA, followed by Myanmar, New Zealand and Australia.
  • Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) is an international organisation that promotes giving to transform lives and communities across the world.

India-Japan Joint Air Force Exercise ‘Shinyuu Maitri’ To be Held in West Bengal from Oct 17 to 23

  • The Indian Air Force and Japanese Air Self Defence Force (JASDF) will carry out the annual joint military exercise ‘Shinyuu Maitri’ from October 17 to 23.
  • The Exercise Shinyuu Maitri 2019 will be held at Air Force Station, Arjan Singh, Panagarh, West Bengal.

J.P.S. Chawla Takes Over as New Controller General of Accounts

  • The Government of India has appointed Shri J. P. S. Chawla, 1985-batch Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) Officer, as the new Controller General of Accounts (CGA), Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance with effect from October 15, 2019.
  • He succeeds Girraj Prasad Gupta.

World Food Day: October 16

  • World Food Day is celebrated every year on 16 October globally to eradicate worldwide hunger from our lifetime.
  • It was on this day in 1945 that the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was founded.
  • Theme 2019: “Our Actions Are Our Future, Healthy Diets for A #ZeroHunger World”.
