IRDAI Constitutes Committee Headed by TR Alamelu to recommend amendments to Reinsurance, Investment, FRBs and Llyods India Regulations

  • The insurance regulator IRDAI has constituted a top level panel to re-look into the set of existing norms on Re-insurance, Investment, Foreign Re-insurance Branches (FRBs) and Llyods India.
  • The 9-member committee will be headed by Mrs TR Alamelu, Member (non-life, IRDAI) to review the regulations, circulars and guidelines issued earlier.
  • The committee has been formed because subsequent to the issue of these regulations, the insurers sought clarifications and applicability of certain provisions of the Regulations/Guidelines/Circulars.

IMF revises GDP growth rate prediction for 2019 at 6.1% and for 2020 at 7.0%

  • The International Monetary Fund in its latest World Economic Outlook has predicted the GDP growth rate for India in 2019 at 6.1%. Earlier this was 7.0%.

India wins four UNESCO heritage awards

  • Four sites from India have been chosen for the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards. The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation awards were announced at a ceremony held in Penang, Malaysia.
  • The winning sites are:
    • Vikram Sarabhai Library, IIM Ahmedabad – Award of Distinction
    • Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue, Mumbai – Award of Merit
    • Our Lady of Glory Church, Mumbai – Award of Merit
    • Flora Fountain, Mumbai – Honourable Mention

HCL’s Shiv Nadar tops EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2019

  • HCL founder and chairman Shiv Nadar has achieved the top rank in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2019.
  • He made the highest contribution of Rs 826 crore between April 2018 and March 2019 towards philanthropic causes.
  • Wipro’s Azim Premji has been ranked second with total donations worth Rs 453 crore during the qualifying period.
  • Reliance Industries’ chief Mukesh Amabani came third with total contribution Rs 402 crore.
  • The list has been compiled by the EdelGive Foundation and Hurun Research Institute.
  • It ranks individuals from India who donated Rs 5 crore and above between April 1, 2018 and March 31, 2019 towards philanthropic contributions.

Margaret Atwood and Bernardine Evaristo Jointly win Booker Prize 2019

  • Canadian author Margaret Atwood and Anglo-Nigerian author Bernardine Evaristo have jointly been awarded the 2019 Booker Prize for Fiction.
  • Margaret Atwood has won for her novel ‘The Testaments’ and Bernardine Evaristo for her novel ‘Girl, Woman, Other’.
  • Evaristo is the first black woman to win the prestigious award since its creation in 1969.
  • They are the first joint winners in almost 30 years, after the last tie in 1992.
  • Booker Prize for Fiction is a literary prize awarded each year for the best original novel written in the English language and published in the United Kingdom.

India and Netherlands Launches Second Phase of LOTUS-HR for Sewage Water Treatment

  • India and Netherlands jointly launched the second phase of the Local Treatment of Urban Sewage streams for Healthy Reuse (LOTUS-HR) program on October 14, 2019 that seeks to treat dirty water of Barapullah Drain in Delhi before it falls into Yamuna.
  • Under the Phase II of the project, plans are to treat 10 thousand litres of sewage water per day from the earlier 100 litre/day.
  • The LOTUS-HR project, launched in July 2017, is a joint initiative supported by Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India and Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research /STW, Government of Netherlands to produce clean water which can be reused for various purposes.
  • It must be noted that the King of the Kingdom of The Netherlands, His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty, Queen Maxima is in India for a five-day state visit from October 13-17, 2019.

Air India Becomes First Airline In The World To Use Taxibot On Commercial Airbus Flight

  • The National carrier Air India has created history on October 15, 2019 as it became the first airline in the world to use TaxiBot as alternate taxiing equipment on its Airbus A320 with passengers onboard.
  • TaxiBot is a pilot-controlled, semi-robotic aircraft tractor to tow an aircraft from parking bay to runway, while the plane’s engines are switched off.
  • The TaxiBot successfully towed a commercial Air India flight carrying passengers from Delhi to Mumbai to the runway for take-off on October 15 at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
  • The tractor has been developed by Israel Aerospace Industries in partnership with a French company. A total of 40 Taxibots will be deployed at airports across the county.

Benefits of using TaxiBot

  • Save around 85 percent of the fuel the plane would normally use at that time
  • Cut down CO2 emissions. Up to 800 kilograms are emitted for every 15 minutes from parking to runway.
  • Noise pollution levels are expected to drop by about 60 percent.

Book titled “Good Economics for Hard Times – Better Answers to our Biggest Problems” by Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo to be released

  • A new book titled “Good Economics for Hard Times – Better Answers to our Biggest Problems” which is authored by Nobel Prize winners in Economic Sciences for 2019- Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo will be released on October 19, 2019.
  • In the book the authors argue that we have the resources to solve these problems; what we lack are ideas that will help us jump the wall of disagreement and distrust that divides us.

Kais Saied Elected President of Tunisia

  • Former professor of constitutional law, Kais Saied, has been elected the next President of Tunisia after a landslide victory in the 2019 presidential election with 72.71 percent of the votes.
  • The 61-year-old Saied will succeed Mohamed Ennaceur who is currently the interim President of Tunisia since July 2019 following the death of President Beji Caid Essebsi.
  • Saied will assume the office on October 30, 2019 as the 6th President of Tunisia.

ICC Changes Super Over Rule for all its major Tournaments

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) on October 14, 2019, has announced a change in the super over rule for all its major events.
  • Super Over: It is a tie-breaking method used in limited-overs cricket matches when both teams score equal runs, where an additional over of six balls is played by each team to determine the final winner of the match.
  • New Rule: As per new Super Over rule, in case of a tie in super over also, there will be a repeated super over until there is a clear winner (means one team has more runs than the other).
    • The controversial rule in which the team scoring more boundaries during the entire match was declared the winner in case of a tie in a Super Over has been scrapped under the new rule by ICC.
  • The decision follows the 2019 World Cup final between England and New Zealand when England were declared winner against New Zealand on boundary count, as super over also ended in a tie with both teams making 15.

Priyanshu Rajawat Wins Men’s Singles title at Bahrain International Series (Badminton) 2019

  • Indian shuttler Priyanshu Rajawat beat top-seed Jason Anthony Ho-Shue from Canada in the final to claim the men’s singles title at the 2019 Bahrain International Series at Isa Town, Bahrain.
  • Ira Sharma secured second spot in women’s single.
  • The tournament was a BWF International Series level sanctioned by Badminton World Federation and Badminton Asia.

World Students’ Day: 15 October

  • World Students’ Day is observed every year on October 15 to commemorate the birth anniversary of former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.
  • The United Nations declared 15 October “World Students’ Day” in 2010 due to Kalam’s love for students and who himself was a dedicated teacher and identified himself foremost in that role before anything else.
  • 15 October 2019 marks the 88th birthday of APJ Abdul Kalam.

International Day of Rural Women: October 15

  • The International Day of Rural Women is held every year on October 15. The first observation was held in 2008.
  • The United Nations General Assembly established the day on 18 December 2007, to recognize the critical role and contribution of rural women, including indigenous women, in enhancing agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty.
