India to co-chair Consultative Group (CG) of Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR)

  • India has been unanimously chosen as co-chair of the Consultative Group (CG) of Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) for the fiscal year 2020.
  • GFDRR is a global partnership that helps developing countries better understand and reduce their vulnerability to natural hazards and climate change. GFDRR is a grant-funding mechanism, managed by the World Bank, that supports disaster risk management projects worldwide.
  • India became member of CG of GFDRR in 2015.

RBI appoints R Gandhi on YES Bank Board as Additional Director

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed R Gandhi, former Deputy Governor of RBI as Additional Director on the board of private sector lender YES Bank for a period of two years with effect from May 14, 2019 to May 13, 2021 or till further orders, whichever is earlier.
  • The RBI has the powers conferred under sub-section (1) of Section 36AB of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 to appoint additional directors on the board of a bank if it feels it is in the interest of the banking company or its depositors.

Justice A K Sikri appointed NBSA Chairperson

  • Justice A.K. Sikri has been appointed Chairperson of the News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA). He is a former judge of Supreme Court of India.
  • He will assume office on May 26 and succeed Justice R.V. Raveendran who completes his term on May 25.
  • The NBSA is a self-regulatory body that implements the Code of Ethics and Broadcasting Standards and Guidelines for its member news broadcasters.

Major General AK Dhingra appointed as the first head of India’s first tri-services Special Operations Division

  • Major General AK Dhingra has been appointed as the first head of India’s first tri-services Special Operations Division. It comprises of commandos from all three services i.e Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force.
  • The Armed Forces Special Operations Division has been set up by the government to undertake joint operations by three services.
  • It will have elements from the Army’s Parachute Regiments SF, Marine Commandos (MARCOS) of the Navy and the Garud Commandos of the Indian Air Force.
  • Maj Gen Dhingra is a Special Forces veteran and is from the elite 1 Para Special Forces Regiment.

Igor Stimac appointed coach of Indian football team

  • Igor Stimac of Croatia has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian men’s football team.
  • he was part the of the Croatia national squad which finished third in the FIFA World Cup in France in 1998 and a member of the Croatia national squad which qualified for the quarterfinals of the UEFA European Championship 1996 (Euro) in England.
  • He has been appointed for a term of two years and succeeds Stephen Constantine

Anil Kapoor to be Felicitated by Council of European Chambers of Commerce

  • Bollywood Actor Anil Kapoor will be felicitated by the Council of European Chambers of Commerce (CEUCC) in India and European Union delegation as part of the Europe Day celebrations in Mumbai on May 17, 2019.
  • Europe Day is celebrated every year on May 9 to mark the formation of the European Union (EU).
  • The actor, who will be the chief guest for the celebrations, will be honored for his decade-long support to promoting the cause of children’s rights and his collaboration with the EU and Plan India in their girls’ rights endeavours.

Paytm Launches Credit Card in Partnership With Citi Bank with Universal Unlimited Cashback

  • Indian digital wallet company Paytm has tied up with American card company Citibank to launch a credit card called the Paytm First Card.
  • The card will offer minimum assured one percent “universal unlimited cashback” on all transactions to customers along with no restrictions on earning categories.
  • Paytm First Card will have an annual fee of Rs. 500, with the facility of full waiver of annual fee on spends exceeding Rs 50,000 per year.
  • It is the first card of its kind card launched in India by Citi as well as first white-label credit card to offer unlimited one per cent cash-back.

Ola launches credit card in partnership with SBI and Visa

  • Cab aggregator Ola has launched Ola Money Credit Card in partnership with State Bank of India. The Ola Money Credit Card is powered by Visa.
  • The Ola-SBI credit card will come packaged with an exclusive rewards program. The team is currently targeting to issue 10 million Ola Money-SBI Credit Cards by 2022.

Kami Rita creates world record by scaling Mt. Everest for 23rd time

  • Kami Rita, a 49-year-old veteran Nepali sherpa has scaled Mount Everest for the 23rd time, the maximum by anyone. He broke his own record of 22 climbs.
  • Rita has been climbing Mt. Everest since 1994. In 2017, Kami became the 3rd person to climb Mt. Everest for 21 times, equalizing the achievement of Apa Sherpa and Phurba Tashi Sherpa. Kami broke the record for set record of most summits on Mt. Everest in 2018.

Conference on Asian Civilizations Dialogue (CDAC) Organised in China

  • The Chinese Ministry of Education organised the ‘Conference on Asian Civilizations Dialogue (CDAC)’ on 15 May 2019 in collaboration with UNESCO in Beijing.
  • The theme of the event is Exchanges and Mutual Learning among Asian Civilizations and a Community with a Shared Future.
  • As part of this conference, the Ministry also organized the parallel panel: Safeguarding the Diversity of Asian Civilizations.
  • It aims to bring together a number of internationally renowned experts to deliberate and discuss the major challenges facing the rapprochement and peaceful coexistence of Asian Civilizations in today’s context.

Mumbai Pilot Aarohi Pandit Become’s World’s 1st Woman to Cross Atlantic Ocean solo in LSA

  • Mumbai based 23 year old pilot, Captain Aarohi Pandit, has become the world’s first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean solo in a Light Sports Aircraft (LSA) christened as ‘Mahi’.
  • She has also became the first woman to have successfully completed a solo flight journey across treacherous Greenland Ice cap in an LSA.
  • The journey is part of Pandit’s ongoing year-long global circumnavigation flight from UK to Canad, which was launched with her friend Keithair Misquitta on July 30, 2018 and they will return back to India by July 30 , 2019.

International Day of Families: May 15

  • The International Day of Families is observed on the 15th of May every year to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.
  • The Theme for 2019 International Day of Families is “Families and Climate Action: Focus on SDG 13″.
