India Announces Line of Credit of USD 30 Million to Sierra Leone for Irrigation Development

  • India and Sierra Leone has signed 6 agreements in various fields to expand the bilateral relations, during the visit of Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu to the foreign nation.
  • India has announced EXIM Bank funded Line of Credit worth US$ 30 million for Irrigation development in Tomabum to achieve self-sufficiency in rice production.
  • In addition to this, decision has also been taken to reactivate the USD 15 million Line of Credit for potable water project in Sierra Leone.

Conference on ‘One Nation One Tag – FASTag’ held in New Delhi

  • Shri Nitin Gadkari inaugurated a conference on ‘One Nation One Tag – FASTag’ in New Delhi. The purpose of the conference was to roll out the process of having a unified electronic system across the country.
  • Scheme Guidelines for Inclusion of Sate/ City Toll Plaza under National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme (FASTag) was circulated to all states by Indian Highways Management Corp Ltd (IHMCL).
  • From 1st of December this year, toll collections on all National Highways will mandatorily be done through FASTag only.
  • NPCI is functioning as the Central Clearing House for Fastag and 23 Public and Private sector banks are issuing FASTag.

DPIIT launches website and mobile app for IPR – L2Pro

  • Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry has launched a website and mobile app named L2Pro on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs).
  • L2Pro is a short name for Learn to Protect, Secure and Maximize Your Innovation.
  • The website and app has been developed by Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM)-DPIIT in collaboration with Qualcomm and National Law University (NLU), Delhi.
  • Secretary Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Guruprasad Mohapatra launched the website and app.

Indian-American Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo & Michael Kremer Wins 2019 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences

  • The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2019, commonly referred to as the Nobel Prize in Economics has been jointly conferred upon Indian-American Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer.
  • It is only for the second time in history that a woman is among the Economic laureates.
  • Purpose: “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.”
  • Presented by: Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Indian Filmmaker Priyadarshan Gets National Kishore Kumar Award 2018-19

  • Noted director and producer Priyadarshan, who is famous for several blockbuster Malayalam and Hindi films, has been conferred the Madhya Pradesh government’s National Kishore Kumar Samman for 2018-19.
  • The award has been instituted by MP Department of Culture as a tribute to the legendary singer-actor, Kishore Kumar, who was born in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh.
  • The award carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and a citation.

Dubai launches World Logistics Passport

  • Dubai Customs has launched the World Logistics Passport as part of the implementation of the first phase of its Dubai Silk Road strategy.
  • The World Logistics Passport offers a set of unique operational and financial advantages for businesses and shipping companies by connecting government entities.
  • It is designed to boost the role of the Dubai Silk Road programme, and enhance demand for the emirates’s products, services and integrated transportation systems.

Sports Ministry Makes All Sporting Infrastructure ‘free & accessible’ to Federations and Non-SAI Coaches

  • The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has decided to allow all national and state sports federations, leagues and clubs to use the Sports Authority of India Stadiums and facilities  free of cost with effect from November 1, 2019.
  • This means that sports federations would be able to organise the sports events in all sporting facilities owned by the government without any fees.
  • Further, the ministry has also decided that the non-SAI coaches, who are not part of camps organized in Sports Authority of India centers, can train their athletes in SAI facilities free of cost by booking training slots online from November 1.
  • However, the coach must has a minimum of at least 10 wards under his or her training.
  • The decision has been taken to promote the Fit India Movement and to make play fields and sporting infrastructure accessible to all sports persons across the country so that the culture of playing sport and therefore of fitness, becomes a way of life for Indians.

World Standards Day: October 14

  • The World Standards Day (WSD), also known as International Standards Day, is celebrated globally on 14 October annually.
  • Theme 2019: Video Standards Create a Global Stage.
  • The day aims to pay tribute to the collaborative efforts of thousands of experts/organisations worldwide, who develop voluntary technical agreements that are published as International Standards.
  • The day is observed widely by organisations like American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

Sara Danius, First female head of Nobel’s Literature Award Body Passes Away at 57

  • Sara Danius, the first women head of the prestigious Swedish body that awards the Nobel Prize in Literature, has passed away. She was 57.
  • A literature critic, professor and writer, Ms. Danius was elected to a lifetime position on the Swedish Academy’s board in 2013.
  • She became the body’s first female permanent secretary in 2015 and resigned the position in 2018.
