Two-day ‘Conference on Combating Drug Trafficking’ for BIMSTEC Partner Nations Held in New Delhi

  • The first-ever BIMSTEC nations’s ‘Conference on Combating Drug Trafficking’ was held in New Delhi on 13 and 14 February 2020, to provide a platform for the Partner Nations to share ideas and exchange best practices required to combat the drug menace in the region.
  • The two-day conference was organised by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the federal agency for drug law enforcement.
  • The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is an international organisation comprising seven countries. These are India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Difficult Dialogues 2020 Begins in Panaji, Goa

  • The fifth edition of Difficult Dialogues, an annual forum examining issues of contemporary relevance in South Asia, is being held in Panaji, Goa from 14 to 16 February 2020.
  • The Difficult Dialogues 2020 focuses on the “State of Law” in India.
  • Global experts, policymakers, community-level workers and leading thinkers will come together to deliberate on issues related to law and the legal framework.

3-day global conference on traditional medicines to be held in New Delhi

  • The 7th International Congress of the Society for Ethnopharmacology (SFEC 2020) will be held in New Delhi from February 15 to 17, 2020.
  • The three-day conference will be inaugurated by Minister of State for AYUSH Shripad Yesso Naik.
  • The event will be attended by more than 2,000 experts and representatives of the industry, from India and abroad to deliberate on the strengths of the traditional medicine system and the challenges it faces.
  • The congress is being organised by Jamia Hamdard University, Delhi, and is being supported by the Ministry of AYUSH and Department of Biotechnology among others.

Indian Railways to launch third corporate passenger train Kashi Mahakal Express on Varanasi-Indore Route

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Indian Railways’ third corporate passenger train named Kashi Mahakal Express on 16th February 2020.
  • The train will be run by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) between Varanasi and Indore, connecting religious places of the two states.
  • The commercial operation of the train will begin from 20th February 2020.
  • The superfast fully air-conditioned passenger train is the first overnight private train in the country.
  • It will connect three Jyotirlinga named Omkareshwar (Near Indore),  Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain) and Kashi Vishwanath (Varanasi).
  • The train will operate thrice a week between Varanasi and Indore, once via Prayagraj (Allahabad) and twice via Lucknow, in approximately 19 hours.

Nitin Gadkari Inaugurates India’s First Intercity Electric Bus between Mumbai and Pune

  • The Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari flagged off Mumbai-Pune Electric Bus on 14 February 2020 in Mumbai.
  • It is the first Electric Intercity Bus in India.
  • The 43-seater capacity luxury electric bus has been manufactured by Mitra Mobility Solution.
  • It can run 300 kilometre on a single charge and would be operated twice daily between the two cities.

Ghaziabad police launches ‘Operation Nakail’ for auto-rickshaw drivers

  • The Ghaziabad police authorities have announced to launch an initiative named ‘Operation Nakail’ under which the identity of all auto-rickshaw drivers plying in the district will be verified and a unique four-digit number will be allotted to them.
  • The drivers will be required to get the unique number painted on front, left, right and rear side of the auto-rickshaws.
  • Apart from the unique number, the drivers will also be required to get their names and mobile number of the auto-rickshaw owner painted on the vehicles.
  • This initiative aims to keep check on cases of loot or harassment in auto-rickshaws.

President Kovind Appoints Kejriwal as new CM of Delhi

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Arvind Kejriwal as the new Chief Minister of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, after his Aam Aadmi Party won the recent Delhi Assembly elections with 62 of the 70 seats.
  • The president has also appointed six MLAs as ministers of the Delhi Government namely: Manish Sisodia, Satyender Jain, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gehlot, Imran Hussain and Rajendra Gautam.
  • The six ministers along with Kejriwal will take oath on February 16.

Indian Feminist Scholar Gita Sen Wins prestigious Dan David Prize

  • India’s pioneering feminist scholar and activist Gita Sen, has won the prestigious Dan David Prize 2020 in present category.
  • The award is given by the Dan David Foundation headquartered at Tel Aviv University, Israel, annually in three categories, which is past, present and future. Each category carries $1 million prizes.
  • The award recognizes individuals or organisations, for their outstanding contributions in the fields of science, technology, culture or social welfare, for expanding the knowledge of the past, enrich society in the present, and promise to improve the future of our world.

Indian environmentalist and former Chief of TERI, Rajendra Kumar Pachauri, passes away

  • Indian environmentalist Rajendra Kumar Pachauri, who was the chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of UN, has passed away. He was 79.
  • Pachauri was the chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from 2002 to 2015. IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2017.
  • He was also the former Chairman and Director General of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

National Women’s Day in India: 13 February

  • In India, the National Women’s Day is observed every year on 13 February to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu, also known as the Nightingale of India.
  • Born on 13 February 1879,  Naidu is recognised for her contribution to women’s equal rights.
  • Apart from this, she is widely remembered for her lyrical poems and contributions to the freedom struggle. She was an important figure in India’s struggle for independence from colonial rule.
