Government to launch ‘Vigyan Jyoti’ initiative to help girl students to opt for STEM education

  • The central government will launch a programme named ‘Vigyan Jyoti’ to help girl students inculcate interest in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
  • The program will fund the girl student if she gets into any top institute for pursuing these subjects.
  • The programme ‘Vigyan Jyoti’ aims to tap 100 girl students in 550 districts from 2020-2025 and will cover students from class 9 to class 12.

India Ranks 7th in Brand Finance Nation Ranking 2019; United Retains Top Spot

  • As per the latest report ‘Brand Finance Nation Brands 2019’ by independent brand valuation consultancy Brand Finance, India has moved up two spots to become the seventh most valued nation brand in the world.
  • India which was placed 9th in 2018, registered 19 percent growth in brand value to USD 2.6 trillion in 2019.
  • The list has been topped by United States as the world’s most valuable national brand.
  • China (2), Germany (3), Japan (4) and United Kingdom (5) makes up the top 5 nation brand in the list.

Indo-US joint military exercise ‘Vajra Prahar’ to be held in Seattle

  • The 10th edition of ‘Vajra Prahar’ the joint military exercise between India and the US has started at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) in Seattle, the US from October 13, 2019 and will continue upto October 28, 2019.
  • ‘Vajra Prahar’ is a Special Forces joint training exercise conducted alternately in India and the US.

World Bank revises GDP Growth Rate for India at 6% for FY20

  • The World Bank has predicted the GDP Growth rate for India in 2019-20 at 6%. The GDP rate in 2018-19 was 6.9% for India as per World Bank.
  • GDP Rate for India as per World Bank in FY21: 6.9%
  • GDP Rate for India as per World Bank in FY22:  7.2%

ADB & India Signs USD 190 million Loan for Improving Road Connectivity in Rajasthan

  • The Asian Development Bank and the Government of India have signed a USD 190 million loan agreement to improve road connectivity in Rajasthan.
  • It is the Tranche 2 loan agreement for the Rajasthan State Highway Investment Programme.
  • The loan amount will be used to upgrade 754 kilometres of state highways and major district roads (MDRs) to two-lane or intermediate-lane standards benefiting about 26 million people in 14 districts of Rajasthan.

Lakshya Sen wins Dutch Open 2019 (Badminton)

  • Indian Badminton player, Lakshya Sen has won the Dutch Open men’s singles title by beating Yusuke Onodera of Japan.
  • This is his maiden BWF World Tour title.

Manju Rani Bags Silver in 2019 AIBA World Women’s Boxing Championships

  • Indian boxer Manju Rani lost to Russia’s Ekaterina Paltceva, 4-1 in 48-kilogram category, to settle for silver in the summit clash of 2019 AIBA World Women’s Boxing Championships at Ulan-Ude in Russia.
  • In total, India won 4 medals in the tournament including 1 silver and 3 bronze.
  • The bronze medals came from Mary Kom (51 Kg), Jamuna Boro (54kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (69kg).

Valtteri Bottas wins Formula One Japanese Grand Prix 2019

  • Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes – Finland) has won the F1 Japanese Grand Prix 2019 Title.
  • This is his third title for the season. Sebastian Vettel was second, Lewis Hamilton was third and Alexander Albon remained fourth.

Daniil Medvedev wins Shanghai Masters title 2019 (Tennis)

  • Daniil Medvedev (of Russia) has won the Men’s singles title at Shanghai Masters 2019 (Tennis).
  • He defeated Alexander Zverev of Germany 6-4, 6-1.
  • In the men’s double category Mate Pavić and Bruno Soares are the winners.

International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction:  October 13

  • The UN recognised International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is held on October 13 every year since 1989.
  • Purpose: promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction and also celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks that they face.
  • 2019 Theme: Reduce disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services

Peter Gilchrist of Singapore dethroned Sourav Kothari as world billiards champion by beating the Indian in the long-up format. Gilchrist last won the title in 2013.
