Centre Reduces Rate of Contribution Under ESI Scheme From 6.5% to 4%

  • The government has reduced the total rate of contribution towards the Employees’ State Insurance scheme to 4% from the earlier 6.5% under the Employees’ State Insurance Act (ESI).
  • Hence, the employers’ contribution has been reduced from 4.75% to 3.25% and employees’ contribution has been slashed from 1.75% to 0.75% of their salary.
  • The reduced rates will be effective from 1 July.

Center directs banks to issue Kisan Credit Cards within 2 weeks of submitting application

  • The central government has asked the banks to issue Kisan Credit Cards (KCC) to eligible farmers within 2 weeks of submitting the application.
  • Currently, there are 6.95 crores active KCCs, under which crops loans are given at a subsidized interest rate.
  • Benefit of loan under KCC:
    • Normally, farm loans attract an interest rate of 9%. However, the government provides an Interest Subvention (subsidy) of 2% up to loans of Rs 3 lakh. Hence effective interest rate is 7%.

BSE’s India INX launches GSM Green- dedicated platform for trading green bonds

  • India International Exchange (INX) that is owned by BSE has launched an exclusive platform for trading in green bonds. The platform is named GSM (Global Securities Market) Green.
  • The GSM Green platform went live on June 12, 2019 with issuance and listing of USD 500 million green bonds of three subsidiaries of Adani Green Energy Limited.

Karnataka Launches ‘Pink Sarathi’ Vehicles To Address Women’s Grievances

  • The Chief Minister of Karnataka H.D. Kumaraswamy has flagged off a fleet of 25 “Pink Sarathi” vehicles, procured at a total cost of Rs. 56.07 crore.
  • The Mahindra Bolero vehicles have been ordered under Nirbhaya scheme by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC).  
  • The vehicles have been fitted with GPS and public announcement systems and will be used to attend the grievances of women passengers in city buses.

India ranked 10th in terms of FDI inflow in 2018, US top: UNCTAD

  • As per the UNCTAD World Investment Report 2019, India is on 10th rank in terms of FDI Inflow in the year 2018. The US had the highest inflow of FDI in 2018. It had an FDI inflow of $ 252 bn.
  • The FDI in India increased by 6% from $ 40 bn to $ 42 bn. Last year India’s rank was 9th.

ICBC tops Forbes The World’s Largest Public Companies 2000 list; Reliance top Indian firm

  • The Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd (ICBC) has topped the list of “World’s Largest Public Companies” by Forbes that ranks 2000 companies. JP Morgan Chase is on second and China Construction Bank is on third.
  • From India, 57 companies have found place in the ranking, with Reliance Industries as top Indian firm at 71st rank followed by HDFC Bank at 209 rank. ICICI Bank is ranked at 400 and SBI at 460.

India to launch first solar mission (Aditya-L1) in 2020

  • ISRO has announced that India will launch its first mission to study the sun named Aditya-L1 in the year 2020.
  • The mission Aditya-L1 is meant to observe the solar corona and to keep a permanent eye on the sun without any disturbance.
  • Aditya-L1 mission is expected to be inserted in a halo orbit around the Lagrangian point 1 (L1) – which is 1.5 million km from the earth

SCO Summit 2019 Begins in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on two-day visit to Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit to be held from June 13-14, 2019.
  • This is the second Council of Heads of State (CHS) meeting for India, after it became member of SCO.
  • SCO was founded in 2001 and China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Ujbekistan are the founding members of the organisation. India and Pakistan became full members of the SCO in 2017.

Veteran English Author Amitav Ghosh Conferred Jnanpith award

  • The noted English writer Amitav Ghosh has conferred the 54th Jnanpith award for the year 2018 on June 13, 2019 in New Delhi for his outstanding contribution towards literature in English.
  • He received the award from former Governor of West Bengal Gopalkrishna Gandhi.
  • Amitav Ghosh is the first English writer to get this prestigious award carrying Rs 11 lakh along with shawl, citation and statue of goddess Saraswati.

Poet, lyricist Pazhavila Ramesan passed away at 83

  • Poet and lyricist Pazhavila Ramesan passed away at the age of 83 years. He is a recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for overall contribution.
  • He was from Kerala and wrote in Malayalam.

Veteran Journalist and Former BJP MP Rajnath Singh ‘Surya’ Passes Away

  • The veteran journalist and former Rajya Sabha Member Rajnath Singh ‘Surya’ passed away in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He was 82.
  • Singh became a Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh in November 1996, and retired in November 2002.

International Albinism Awareness Day: June 13

  • International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) is observed annually on June 13 to celebrate the human rights of persons with albinism worldwide.
  • The theme of Albinism Awareness Day 2019 is “Still Standing Strong”
