IAF receives first Apache attack helicopter in US

  • The Indian Air Force received its first Apache Guardian attack helicopter at a Boeing production facility in Arizona, United States on May 10, 2019.
  • Air Marshal AS Butola accepted the first Apache on behalf of the Indian Air Force from US Government.
  • In September 2015, IAF had signed a contract with US Government and Boeing Limited for 22 Apache helicopters. The first batch of these helicopters is scheduled to be shipped to India by July 2019.

IIT Bombay Researchers Develop Made in India Microprocessor AJIT

  • Engineers from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have developed a home grown microprocessor called AJIT.
  • It is the first microprocessor to be conceptualised, designed, developed and manufactured in India.
  • The project was funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and IIT Bombay.
  • The team of researchers was lead by Prof. Madhav Desai of the electrical engineering department and consisted of nine researchers.

Samsung Launches World’s Ultra-High Resolution Image Sensor

  • Samsung Electronics Co has introduced the world’s highest-resolution image sensors that will help smartphones capture images at vibrant ultra-high resolution.
  • The two new 0.8-micrometer pixel image sensors includes
    1. 64-megapixel ISOCELL Bright GW1
    2. 48-megapixel ISOCELL Bright GM2
  • With this launch, Samsung expands its 0.8μm image sensor lineup, the smallest pixel size currently available in the market, from existing 20Mp to ultra-high 64Mp resolutions.

US launches Global Health Security Strategy To Respond to Threats from Infectious Diseases

  • The government of United States has unveiled a first of its kind strategy called as ‘Global Health Security Strategy’ that will help to prevent, detect and respond to threats from infectious diseases occurring naturally or accidentally.
  • The effort aims to improve the world’s ability to stop the deadly outbreaks before they spread between countries.
  • Under the Strategy, US will work to ensure that every partner country has a plan to achieve self-reliance in the critical area of health security.

First edition of world’s first women’s cricket magazine ‘CRICZONE’ launched

  • The first edition of world’s first exclusive women’s cricket magazine named ‘Criczone’ was released in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
  • Indian team cricket vice-captain Smriti Mandhana has featured as the cover story.

Nigerian Professor Muhammad-Bande appointed President Elect of UNGA

  • Tijjani Mohammad Bande, a professor from Nigeria, has been appointed as the new President of the United Nations General Assembly.
  • He will succeed incumbent María Fernanda Espinosa Garces after her tenure lapses in September 2019.
  • He served as the permanent representative of Nigeria to United Nations before his appointment as President of UNGA.
  • He will be the second Nigerian to be president of the UN General Assembly.
  • The first was Joseph Nanven Garba, who served as president between 1989 and 1990.

Tamil Novelist and Sahitya Akademi Winner Thoppil Mohamed Meeran Passes Away

  • The noted novelist and Sahitya Akademi awardee from Tamil Nadu, Thoppil Mohamed Meeran, passed away. He was 74.
  • He received the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1997 for Saaivu Naarkkaali (The Reclining Chair) which was released in 1995.

Acting trainer Roshan Taneja passed away

  • Acting guru/trainer Roshan Taneja passed away at the age of 87 years
  • He had trained Bollywood stars like  Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Jaya Bachchan, Anil Kapoor and Shatrughan Sinha.

ITC chairman Y.C. Deveshwar passed away

  • Chairman of ITC Limited, Y.C. Deveshwar passed away at the age of 72 years.
  • Deveshwar, joined ITC in 1968, becoming a director in 1984 and was appointed the chief executive and chairman on January 1, 1996.
  • He has served as a director in the central board of the Reserve Bank of India and the Air India. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2011.

National Technology Day: May 11

  • India celebrates the National Technology Day every year on 11 May.
  • It was on this day in 1998 that India successfully tested Shakti-I nuclear missile at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan.
  • It also highlight the achievements of our scientists and engineers in the field of science and technology and encourage students to embrace Science as a career option.

World Migratory Bird Day 2019: May 11

  • The World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is celebrated twice in a year since it started in 2006. Firstly it is held on Second Saturday of May and again on Second Saturday of October.
  • In 2019, the WMBBD is being held on May 11 and October 12.
  • The day is observed to spread awareness for the need to conserve migratory birds and their habitats
  • The theme for 2019 WMBD is “Protect Birds: Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution.”
