Govt sets target of providing clean drinking water to all by 2024

  • Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh has announced that the Central Government has set the target of providing clean drinking water to all by 2024.
  • The government is in the process of formulating a plan to provide clean drinking water to nearly 14 crore households.
  • The Central government has decided to increase coverage of piped water to households from the current 18 percent to 100 percent by 2024.

Indian Railways Enter into Agreement with France for Railway Station Development Program

  • The Indian Railway Station Development Corporation (IRSDC), has entered into tripartite agreement with French Railways (SNCF) and AFD, a French Agency, to support capacity building for the Railway Station Development Program in India.
  • The Indian Railway Station Development Corporation (IRSDC) is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the Ministry of Railways.
  • Under the agreement, AFD will provide in-kind grant financing up to 7,00,000 EURO to IRSDC through SNCF-Hubs and Connexions as a Technical Partner to the corporation.

India Designated as Guest Country at Guadalajara International Book Fair in Mexico

  • India will be the Guest of Honour at the 33rd Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara (Guadalajara International Book Fair), the largest book fair in Mexico and entire Spanish speaking world.
  • The book fair will be organised from November 30 – December 8, 2019 in Mexico.
  • The India pavilion will showcase over 35 Indian authors and artists, along with 15 publishing houses.

Amazon Overtakes Google as Top Global Brand: BrandZ Report

  • US retail giant Amazon has moved past technology giants Apple and Google to become the world’s most valuable brand according to the 2019 100 Top BrandZ report by global market research agency Kantar.
  • The brand value of Amazon surged by 52 percent to $315 billion.
  • Apple stood at second while Google slid to third place.

Centre sets up committee to review LPG marketing; Head- Kirit Parikh

  • The Central Government has set up a five-member committee headed by economist Kirit Parikh to review the existing marketing structure of LPG marketing in India.
  • The committee will look into issues related to definition or quality standards of LPG being marketed.

RBI waives off RTGS and NEFT charges on banks

  • The Reserve Bank has waived off the various charges levied by it on the banks for transactions processed in the RTGS and NEFT systems.
  • It must be understood that RBI handles, RTGS and NEFT. So for any RTGS and NEFT transactions that a bank initiates, the RBI charges some amount of money from the bank. RBI has waived off this charge.
  • This charge must not be confused with the charge that banks take from customers for NEFT or RTGS payments. However, RBI has instructed the banks to pass on the benefit to customers. This will come into effect from July 1, 2019.

RBI forms Committee to Review the ATM Interchange Fee Structure; Head- V. G. Kannan

  • The Reserve Bank of India has formed a six-member committee to Review the ATM Interchange Fee Structure with a view to give a fillip to the ATM deployment in the unbanked areas. The committee is headed by Shri V. G. Kannan.
  • Shri V. G. Kannan is the Chief Executive of Indian Banks’ Association. The role of the committee is as under:
    • To review the existing structures and patterns of costs, charges and interchange fees for ATM transactions;
    • To review the overall patterns of usage of ATMs by cardholders and assess the impact, if any, on charges and interchange fees;
    • To assess the entire gamut of costs in respect of the ATM ecosystem;
    • To make recommendations on the optimal charge/interchange fee structure and pattern

Government names Sharad Kumar as interim Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC)

  • The government has appointed Vigilance Commissioner Sharad Kumar as the interim Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC). This comes after the tenure of the present CVC KV Chowdary ended on June 09, 2019.
  • He will handle the role of Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) until the appointment of the full-time Central Vigilance Commissioner.

Tapan Ray appointed MD of GIFT City

  • Former Corporate Affairs Secretary Tapan Ray has been appointed as the Managing Director of GIFT City. GIFT City is India’s first international financial services centre.
  • Tapan Ray has also served as Joint Secretary at the Department of Defence, and was also on the board of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI)

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev Elected as President of Kazakhstan

  • Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has been elected as the second President of Kazakhstan after winning June 9 presidential election with 70.96 percent of the vote (6,539,715 votes).
  • He took office as the President of Kazakhstan on 20 March 2019 succeeding Nursultan Nazarbayev who resigned on 19 March 2019 after 29 years in office.
  • Immediately after assuming the charge, Tokayev proposed renaming Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan to Nur-Sultan, after his predecessor, which was approved by the Parliament of Kazakhstan.

UAE Cabinet adopts National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031

  • The UAE Cabinet has adopted the National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031 to improve the quality of life for Emiratis and residents.
  • The 12-year strategy aims to make the UAE a world leader in quality of life by launching 90 new projects that will improve the physical, psychological and digital health of future generations.
  • The Strategy will be implemented at three main levels – individuals, society and the country.
  • It will include 14 components and nine strategic objectives and 90 supporting initiatives targeting more than 40 priority areas.

Sourav Kothari wins 2019 International Reveton Classic Snooker Championship

  • Indian billiards player Sourav Kothari has won the 2019 International Reventon Classic Snooker championship that was held in Melbourne, Australia.
  • He defeated Tyson Crinis of Australia to win the title.
