Government meets FY19 fiscal deficit goal of 3.4%

  • The government had set the met the fiscal deficit target of 3.4 percent of the GDP for 2018-19 and was successful in meeting this target of 3.4% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in FY19.
  • This was possible by reducing government spending and increasing borrowings from small savings funds.

IMF cuts global GDP growth forecast by 20 bps to 3.3% for 2019

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lowered its global GDP growth forecast for 2019 to 3.3 % from the previous level of 3.5 % in its latest World Economic Outlook (WEO).

Interest Rate for General Provident Fund Retained at 8% for Q1 of FY20

  • The Government of India has retained the interest rate for General Provident Fund (GPF) and other related schemes at 8 percent for the first quarter (April to June) of financial year 2019-20, effective from April 1, 2019.
  • The interest rate on these funds was at 8 percent in January-March quarter of 2018-19.
  • The interest rate will be applicable on provident funds of central government employees, railways and defence forces.

Irdai asks insurers to share status of claims with policyholders from July 1

  • The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has advised all the insurance company to devise a framework to share the status of claims by developing a tracking mechanism for policyholders so as to enable them to know the status of their claim.
  • IRDAI has said that insurers need to implement this claim tracking mechanism w.e.f July 01, 2019.

Karnam Sekar to Take over as MD & CEO of Indian Overseas Bank wef July 1

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Karnam Sekar, MD and CEO of the former Dena Bank, as the MD and CEO of Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) from July 1, 2019. His term will end in June 2020.
  • R A Sankara Narayanan, former MD and CEO of Vijaya Bank, has been appointed as the MD & CEO of Canara Bank. His term will end in January 2020.

London Becomes World’s First city to Implement 24×7 Pollution Charge Zone, ULEZ

  • In order to reduce air pollution and protect public health, London has come up with a special Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) where vehicles will have to meet tough emissions standards to enter or pay an entry charge if they do not meet the standards.
  • The ULEZ will be operational for 24 hours and seven days in a week.
  • Drivers can check whether their vehicle meets the emission standards of the zone by using an online tool provided by Transport for London.
  • With this, London has become the first ever city in the world to implement such a program to tackle air pollution.

Virat Kohli and Smriti Mandhana win ‘Leading Cricketer of Year’ by Wisden

  • Virat Kohli has been named the  ‘Leading Cricketer of Year’ by the 2019 edition of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack. This is the third consecutive win for Virat Kohli.
  • While in Women’s Cricket, Smriti Mandhana has been named the ‘Leading Cricketer of Year’ by the 2019 edition of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack. 
  • Virat Kohli has also been named in the five Wisden Cricketers of the year, along with Tammy Beaumont, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran and Rory Burns.
  • Rashid Khan of Afghanistan has been named the Leading T20 Cricketer of the Year.

World Homeopathy Day: April 10

  • World Homeopathy Day is celebrated every year on April 10 to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, who is considered as the founder of system of alternative medicine called Homeopathy.
  • The year 2019 marks the 264th birthday of Hanhemann.

International Convention on World Homoeopathy Day

  • The Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH), Ministry of AYUSH, organised a two day convention on the occasion in New Delhi from April 9-10, 2019.
  • The event was held to understand the challenges faced and formulate future strategies for the development of Homeopathy in the country.
