National Institute of Financial Management, Faridabad, to be renamed as Arun Jaitley National Institute of Financial Management

  • The Government of India has decided to rename National Institute of Financial Management (NIFM), Faridabad as Arun Jaitley National Institute of Financial Management (AJNIFM).
  • The decision has been taken to pay tribute to former Union Finance Minister and Padma Vibhushan awardee late Shri Arun Jaitley.
  • The Union Finance Minister is the President of the NIFM Society.
  • NIFM, Faridabad, was set up in 1993 as a registered society under Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, Government of India.
  • The institute aims to train officers of various Finance and Accounts Services recruited by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) through the Civil Services Examination as also officers of Indian Cost Accounts Service (ICoAS).

5th India-UK Joint Military Exercise AJEYA WARRIOR 2020 to begin from Feb 13

  • The fifth edition of annual Joint Military Exercise AJEYA WARRIOR-2020 between the Armies of India and the United Kingdom is scheduled to be conducted at Salisbury Plains, the United Kingdom from 13 to 26 February 2020.
  • The exercise will comprise 120 soldiers each from the Indian and United Kingdom Army.
  • The exercise aims to share experiences gained during the conduct of various counter-insurgency and counter-terrorist operations in the past as well as conduct company level joint training with an emphasis on counter-terrorists operation in Urban and Semi-Urban areas.

3-Day global meet on climate change ‘ClimFishCon 2020’ to be held in Kochi

  • A three-day international conference titled ‘ClimFishCon 2020’ to deliberate on the impact of climate change on ‘hydrological cycle, ecosystem, fisheries and food security’ will be held in Kochi, Kerala from February 12 to 14, 2020.
  • Organizers: CUSAT School of Industrial Fisheries in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, Kerala.
  • Theme: Climate Change-Effective Adaptation for a Secure Future.
  • More than 300 delegates from 12 countries including scientists, researchers, administrators, policymakers, academicians, and entrepreneurs will deliberate on strategies to:
    • deal with climate emergency and changing hydrological cycles
    • preserve the ocean and other aquatic biodiversity
    • build a circular and blue economy

33rd African Union (AU) Summit Held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

  • The 33rd African Union (AU) Summit was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 9 February
  • The theme of the 2020 Summit was “Silencing the Guns: Creating conducive conditions for Africa’s development”.
  • The two-day leaders’ summit was attended by more than 35 heads of state and government, as well as representatives of regional and international organizations.
  • President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, is the newly elected Chairperson of the African Union for one year.
  • The African Union (AU) is a continental union consisting of 55 member states located on the continent of Africa.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu Releases book ‘A Child of Destiny’ by K. Ramakrishna Rao

  • The Vice President of India, and Chairman of Rajya Sabha Shri M Venkaiah Naidu released a book titled, ‘A Child of Destiny’, an autobiography penned by Prof. K. Ramakrishna Rao, well-known educationist in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Koneru Ramakrishna Rao is a philosopher, psychologist, parapsychologist, educationist, teacher, researcher and administrator.
  • The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of Padma Shri in 2011.

Mumbai’s Kaamya Becomes World’s Youngest Girl To Climb Mt Aconcagua

  • Mumbai-based, 12-year-old, Kaamya Karthikeyan has scripted history by becoming the youngest girl in the world to summit Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America.
  • Kaamya, who is a class seven student of Navy Children School (NCS) in Mumbai, conquered the mountain peak on February 1 and unfurled the tricolour.
  • Mt Aconcagua is the highest peak outside Asia, with a summit elevation of 6,962 metres.

Gopichand Receives IOC Male Coaches Lifetime Achievement Awards 2019

  • India’s Chief badminton coach Pullela Gopichand has been honored with the prestigious 2019 International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Coaches Lifetime Achievement Award in male category.
  • He has been awarded to recongnise the role played by him in the development of the game in the country.
  • The IOC Coaches Lifetime Achievement Awards is an initiative of the IOC Athletes’ Entourage Commission to recognise outstanding achievements and contributions a coach has made to develop and encourage athletes in line with the Olympic values in summer or winter Olympic sports.

Winners of 2020 Oscars Awards

  • The 92nd Academy Awards also known by the name Oscars, took place Los Angeles, California on February 9, 2020 to honor the best films of 2019.
  • The award is presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
  • The South Korean film Parasite won the most number of awards with four awards, including Best Picture, becoming the first film not in the English language to do so.

World Pulses Day: 10 February

  • World Pulses Day is observed every year on 10 February to raise awareness about the nutritional benefits of pulses as part of sustainable food production aimed towards food security and nutrition.
  • The day has been established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to recognize the importance of pulses (dry beans, lentils, dry peas, chickpeas, lupins) as a global food.
  • The theme of the World Pulses Day 2020 is Plant proteins for a sustainable future.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science: 11 February

  • The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is observed on 11 February to recognise the critical role that women and girls play in science and technology, and to promote full and equal access to participation in science for women and girls..
  • The Day is implemented by UNESCO and UN Women, in collaboration with intergovernmental agencies and institutions, as well as civil society partners, that aim to promote women and girls in science.
  • 2020 Theme – ‘Investment in Women and Girls in Science for Inclusive Green Growth.’
